Facial Hair Application Many boys have different facial hair/side burns. This is a process on how to achieve that look using makeup. You may use any makeup product such as mascara, liquid eyeliner, and face paint. This can be found at the Dollar Store and Party Supplies Stores. I also personally own these products if you have a hard time finding them. If you cannot find a product that matches your desired color exactly, you can try mixing two similar colors together to get the right tone. Pour a small amount of the product or products onto a disposable flat surface, like an old piece of cardboard or magazine. If necessary mix it until you get the right tone. Dab a stipple sponge -- or if you don't have one, an old toothbrush or nail brush -- lightly on the product. Stipple the color onto your face, making sure you keep to the pattern you 3
chose. It's much better to start lightly and build up tone in darker places with additional stippling than to try and do it all in one pass. Dirt and Scratches Many characters have dirt on their face and bruises/scratches, so here is an idea of what needs to be done to achieve the desired look. Dirt: You may use anything to dirty up your face, from brown eye shadow to face paint to brown lipstick for mud. While red lip liner mixed with darker reds for clotting and browns make good scratches depending on how far the scratch has healed. Tooth Enamel Depending how your character looks to you, you may use tooth enamel. To make your teeth look dirty and unkempt. This applies to dry teeth and then allowed to dry for a few minutes. Reapply as needed. Clean with alcohol on swab and brush clean. It is intended for stage a theatrical use only. Jean Valjean During the prologue, you may use a long wig if you want to show your hair has grown during the 19 years as a slave. If you d like to do that I could get you a wig or you can get one yourself. If not then just make your own hair messy. Apply dirt and facial hair for this part of the show. After Valjean s Soliloquy, and during the beginning of At the end of the day when you change go ahead and wipe off your beard but leave some side burns on the side if possible. Also brush your hair out if not wearing a wig before. 7
At the end during the wedding scene, use baby powder to lighten your face and make you look pale. Put reddish makeup on your eyelids and use a spray bottle/water on your forehead to make you seem sweaty (unless you already are) 8
Javert For the entire show I d like you to be clean shaven, if you want sideburns you may add them but nothing extreme. And if you must have facial hair, make it small like Russel Crow s facial hair from the movie. Also have slicked back hair because you re proper and formal. 9
Marius Have a clean shaven face and brushed hair. Have no messy makeup and no dirt. Marius comes from a rich family and pretends to be poor. 10
Cosette Have curled hair half pulled up. For In My Life / A Heart Full of Love, you may leave your hair as is or you can braid it to the side. For the wedding you may have your hair up in a French twist/bun with white flowers in it. Or you can keep your hair the same it has been and add a veil or flowers. (We have a lot of time between acts) Your makeup must be light and beautiful. So add some lip gloss, blush, and pinky makeup. Just make it soft and elegant. If you d like to add lashes you may. 11
Eponine For makeup, use a nude lip, some blush, and some brown eye shadow with mascara. If you d like to add dirt you may. Please don t wear eyelashes because you transform into a boy later on. Your hair should be down and wavy. When you are a boy you can put your hair up in the hat. At the end of the show when everyone sings you can have your long hair as before. 12
Fantine Have your long curled hair back in a clip at the beginning. Your makeup must be subtle. Use mild blush, brown eyeshadow, and soft pink lips. If you want eyelashes you may use falsies. After I Dreamed a Dream, take out your clip to show you are slowly losing your grip on life. When you go off with the Old Woman, put brown eyeshadow on your face for dirt, and I have a brown wig that matches your hair color that s short to put on if you d like to use that. During your death scene use baby powder to make yourself look paler, use a spray bottle/water for sweat since you are dying. 13
Thenardier You must have super big sideburns like no other character. Have messy hair and then apply some blush. During the wedding scene, use white face paint to look super pale and use red dots of blush on your cheeks and red lip stick. If you want to draw a mustache on you can. Put dirt on your face mud for the sewer scene. 14
Madame Thenardier For makeup you may have a lot of artistic freedom. Make sure to have a dark lip and eyeshadow with blush. Your hair needs to be kind of crazy but you may do whatever you feel is right. During the wedding have white face paint with red lips and circle blush. Use whatever eyeshadow you d like. 15
Young Cosette Have very messy and scraggly hair. Put dirt everywhere on you. If you want to put a cut on your forehead you are welcome to do that as well. Young Eponine Have blush and mascara as makeup. Also have curly and cute doll like hair. 16
Bishop Be clean shaven with side burns. Do not have dirt on you in Look Down due to the quick change. Use the hair that you have when you go to church or a formal event. 17
Gavroche: Have messy hair and some dirt on your face. Enjolras: Be clean shaven, have messy hair, and if you would like a little facial hair you can have it. Whatever you think this character would do. Combeferre: Have brushed down hair with tiny side burns Feuilly: Side burns plus a mustache. Curly hair. Courfeyrac: Have messy hair, chin stubble, and side burns. Joly: have straight hair and clean shaven Grantaire: Have messy hair and tiny side burns Prouvaire: Apply mild side burns and have your hair brushed straight more to one side. Lesgles: Have facial hair and brushed down hair. Students/Revolutionaries: You may have either side burns, facial hair, or be clean shaven. For hair you can have either messy hair or nicer kept hair. You have freedom in this area. *Look online at pictures of your character for a better understanding 18
Accused Man s Daughter: Put your hair in two braids with some dirt on your face. Accused Man: Look like Jean Valjean before the transformation (Pg. 3). Accused Man s Son: Have messy hair and dirt on the face Accused Man s Wife: Have long hair that is messy. Be dirty and tired looking. Another Bystander: Put dirt on your face and have some stubble. Your hair can be whatever you d like. Army Officer: Have slicked hair and if you could figure out how to get a handle bar mustache that would be awesome! Bamatabois: Be clean shaven and have nice hair. Depending on which side of the stage you come on, put red scratches on the opposite side facing the audience. Fantine will scratch you on that side and that is when you turn and show the audience the scratches. If you have questions go ahead and message me. 19
Chain Gang: Have cuts, bruises, and facial hair. Look messy and dirty. Whatever you think your character will look like. Constables: Be clean shaven and have brushed hair. Court/Onlooker Crowd: You can either be poor or middle class if you d like. Poorer people have dirt on their face and messy hair while middle class has nicer hair in braids, buns, or straight down without dirt on their face. Customers: However you picture your character. It can vary from rich people to poorer people. Factory Workers: All workers should have blush and their hair up except Fantine. Do minimal makeup. Farmer: Have a beard/facial hair. You don t need to be dirty though. 20
Fauchelevant: Have messy hair with a lot of dirt and mud on you. If you want some bruises you re welcome to try that. Foreman: Have facial hair or sideburns, whichever you decide. Your hair must be somewhat kept clean but can be a little messy. Girl 1-4: Have natural makeup and soft lip colors. Girl 5: Have light red lips, blush, and grey/brown eyeshadow. Judge: Apply old age makeup and a powder wig if you could get one. Laborers: Apply dirt and have messy hair. Major Domo: It would be awesome if you had a powder wig, if not that s fine. You should have a mustache of some sort like a handle bar. Your hair should be slicked back. 21
Nurse: Put your hair up in a bun and have a clean face with natural makeup. If you think your character is older you are welcome to age lines. Old Woman: Have old age makeup and either put a shawl over your head or you can use grey colored hair spray to make you look older. Onlooker 1 & 2: Have facial hair of some kind and dirt on your face. Onlooker 3 & 4: Have messy hair with patches of facial hair. Have some dirt on your face. Pimp: Have sideburns and messy hair. Prostitutes: Use lots of blush and have smudged lips, cuts, bruises, and heavy makeup. Use different hair such as: 22
Sailor 1: Be clean shaven. Have nice hair. Sailor 2: Apply a beard. Have nice hair. Sailor 3: Apply sideburns. Have nice hair. Scared Girl: Have your hair down and wear no makeup except mascara. Scared Woman: Have your hair up in a bun or French twist. For makeup have crow s feet on eyes and a red lip. Sentries: Be clean shaven with brushed hair. Sick Prostitute: Have a pale face, inflamed gashes, dirt, smudged red lipstick, and runny makeup to make it seem like you were crying and tried to clean it but couldn t. Make your hair stringy and wet looking. Use a spray bottle/water to make it look like you are sweating and sick/dying. 23
Sister/Servant: Have natural and/or bare faced makeup. Just look natural. Have your hair up in a bun. If you feel like your character is older you are welcome to put age makeup on. Solo Urchin: Same as the poor ensemble s makeup and hair. Thenardier s Gang: You can have artistic liberties with the makeup and hair. Just make sure it is messy and dirty. Not the nicest looking people. The Poor Ensemble: Have dirt on your face and arms; make your hair matted and messy. Weary Customer: Put some bags under your eyes and have messy hair. Wedding Guests: Look as beautiful and fancy as possible. These are the richer people in France. Woman: Use brown eyeshadow and red lips. 24
Women 1-4 and Women Ensemble: This makeup and hair can be whatever you think the character would wear. Wear some makeup, some dirt. Hair can be either up or down.
