One City One Summer it s liverpool MAIN EVENT Rich in culture, Liverpool s often collective approach creates surprising and unmissable events that are the rocket fuel for the city s renaissance and its international aspirations. Both its grand and more intimate spaces host unique experiences where heritage mixes with contemporary culture. Liverpool is home to some of the finest international art collections and cultural organisations, shaped by its compelling history, and we use these to look to the future with art and performances that are fresh, exciting and bold. You can get your cultural fix in Liverpool at any time of the year but this summer as part of the One City, One Summer cultural programme for the International Festival for Business (IFB) 2014, the city presents a sparkling season of over 120 events that includes a number of new commissions and a festival every weekend. You won t have time to take in everything, but you can always come back to experience Liverpool s unique and distinctive cultural life, all year round. In the July issue, we round up the fabulous festivals, art, museum exhibitions, theatre, film, dance and music happenings throughout the city. We also look forward to what s on after One City, One Summer the city s celebrations run on throughout the year with Liverpool International Music Festival and Liverpool Pride, and into 2015 with the historic visit of the Cunard fleet. ifb2014.com/culture #OneCityOneSummer @IFB2014 @VisitLiverpool The spectacular finale for One City, One Summer... 23-27 JULY 2014 MEMORIES OF AUGUST 1914 This summer Liverpool welcomes back some giant-sized visitors to roam the streets of the city. After their unforgettable visit in 2012, Royal De Luxe will return once again as Liverpool hosts one of the UK s flagship 2014 World War One commemoration events. Remember the role of Liverpudlians in the Great War, the heroic achievements of the city and rekindle the memories of Liverpool in this magical tale of hope, loss and bravery for a journey through time, when Giants wake from slumber and a city commemorates. Meet the Little Girl Giant, her canine companion Xolo and a new Grandmother Giant and see them tell their story throughout the city, at landmarks including William Brown Street, Town Hall, the Waterfront, the Chinese Arch, both Cathedrals, Newsham Park and Canning Dock. And finally, bid them farewell as they sail away on the River Mersey. Memories of August 1914 is co-commissioned by Liverpool City Council and 14-18 NOW.

Mark McNulty 2014 FESTIVALS 5 JULY 26 OCTOBER 2014 LIVERPOOL BIENNIAL 2014 THE UK BIENNIAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART International art that unfolds across Liverpool s spaces, places and galleries. This summer sees four months of free exhibitions, events and performances by leading contemporary artists, including the 8th Biennial Exhibition A Needle Walks into a Haystack, curated by Mai Abu ElDahab and Anthony Huberman. The Biennial Exhibition takes place across the city at venues including The Old Blind School,, the Bluecoat and Tate Liverpool. As well as a group show featuring work from over 17 international artists, there will be solo presentations from filmmaker and photographer Sharon Lockhart, painter and flamboyant public figure James McNeill Whistler and a transformation of Tate s Wolfson gallery by architect Claude Parent. As part of the opening weekend, on Saturday 5 July Michael Nyman s Symphony No.11: Hillsborough Memorial will be performed by Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at Liverpool Cathedral. A recording of the symphony will be played in Liverpool Cathedral at selected times throughout the summer. Also featured in Liverpool Biennial 2014 are Bloomberg New Contemporaries, the John Moores Painting Prize and Adrian Henri at LJMU s Exhibition Research Centre. A group show at Open Eye Gallery will feature work from a number of artists, including Hans Haacke, Ugo Mulas, Cristina De Middel and Ira Lombarda. There will also be a free programme of music events, talks, screenings and family workshops throughout the festival. On the Liverpool Waterfront is Dazzle Ship by Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez, co-commissioned by Liverpool Biennial, 14-18 NOW WW1 Centenary Art Commissions and Tate Liverpool, in partnership with Merseyside Maritime Museum. 11-19 JULY 2014 BRAZILICA Brazilica, the UK s largest samba carnival event, passes through the city s streets on the evening of Saturday 19 July. This stunning spectacle is sure to be the undoubted highlight of the festival. Hundreds of performers will take part in this Rio-style carnival weaving its way through the city centre with glittering costumes, floats and irresistible samba. Dancers, Brazilian style drummers and spectacular floats will start their journey through the city at 8pm. The festival also showcases Brazilian bands at the main stage site in Williamson Square from midday to 11pm, and throughout the week there are live music performances, exhibitions, films and workshops, something for all the family and a taste of Brazil right here in Liverpool. 11-18 JULY 2014 BROUHAHA INTERNATIONAL CARNIVAL The Brouhaha Festival opens with a bang on 11 July with Infecting the City, a dynamic event showcasing the work of 200 performers via a street parade and a number of site-specific performances. On 12 July, 1000 costumed participants take to the streets for Liverpool International Carnival, to celebrate the city s diversity and creativity. The carnival will wind its way through Toxteth and come to rest in Princes Park, which will be alive with local and international performance work, global foods and family arts workshops. The Beautiful North one-day festival on 13 July begins with a spectacular carnival parade through Stanley Park to the Isla Gladstone Conservatory, then local and international dancers, circus artists, musicians and acrobats will dazzle audiences. From 14-17 July, Brouhaha brings you International Brunch - lunchtime international performances in Williamson Square. And to close the 2014 festival, Mandela Day on 18 July will see over 200 international performers in an outdoor large-scale performance spectacle at the Metropolitan Cathedral.

FESTIVALS 17 JULY 2 AUGUST 2014 FLUX Flux is a pioneering arts festival engineered by young people. Set within Liverpool s world-class arts and cultural offer, audiences will be invited to discover a range of multi-arts performances and events online and across the city. From literary events, film and music to gaming and visual arts, there will be something for everyone. Not your usual festival, Flux provides a series of workshops and development programmes beyond the festival dates to nurture creativity and entrepreneurialism in young people. 25 JULY 1 AUGUST 2014 INDIKA Capstone Theatre Milapfest s annual festival of world-class Indian performing arts returns to The Capstone Theatre. With a host of India s leading artistes performing, this year s festival features classical evening performances in the theatre, traditional A partnership programme with over 30 arts organisations, Flux aims to put young people at the heart of the arts in the city region, acting as a catalyst to increase opportunities and reflect the aspirations of young people aged 14-25 years. morning raga concerts and a family-friendly garden party on 26 July. The theme of Indika 2014 is collaboration and throughout the week audiences will have the opportunity to see collaborations between different Indian music genres and dance styles and unusual instrument combinations. The opening performance Light on the Path will be a highlight of the festival on 25 July. Featuring India s leading Bharatanatyam dance duo The Dhanajayans, Carnatic pianist Anil Srinivasan, vocalist Sikkil Gurucharan and mridangam percussionist Patri Satish Kumar, this innovative performance explores the theme of light, devotion and enlightenment. Indika is the biggest celebration of classical Indian arts in the North West and a highlight of the Liverpool festival season. 6 JULY 2014 ONE WORLD FESTIVAL Williamson Square Celebrating the vibrancy of world cultures. With a World in One City theme, the festival will be a fantastic cultural extravaganza that showcases the unique sights, sounds, tastes and artistic variety of the world continents, set in Liverpool City Centre. One World Festival 2014 will celebrate the multiplicity of cultures in Liverpool via street arts, animation, music, dance, acrobatics and carnival artists. It presents an artistically diverse programme, bringing the city centre to life and turning it into a powerful cauldron of global arts. Audiences will be treated to a fine mix of local, national and international acts who will take them on an unforgettable artistic journey. UNTIL 16 JULY 2014 FESTIVAL 31 Liverpool s first official festival celebrating arts and culture from refugee communities, and discourse around the refugee experience over 31 days. 19 20 JULY 2014 POLISH FOLKLORE WEEKEND Camp and Furnace Flower garlands, multi-coloured costumes and spirited folk music and dance! Merseyside Polonia presents Polish Folklore Weekend, exhibiting colourful Polish traditions. Head to the Museum of Liverpool to find out more about Polish Midsummer customs and the man who helped to preserve them, Oscar Kolberg Polish ethnographer, folklorist and composer. There will be special workshops where you will be able to make your own flower headdress using fresh blossom, herbs and shrubs. During the day there will be live shows of Polish dance. 5 13 JULY 2014 WIRRAL FESTIVAL OF FIRSTS This international arts festival boasts a full line-up of outdoor performances, poetry happenings, writing workshops, a family film festival, comedians and classical musicians. 5-6 JULY 2014 SCARECROW FESTIVAL WEEKEND National Wildflower Centre Scarecrows created by schools and community groups from across Merseyside displayed in wildflower gardens and showcasing British wildflowers.

UNTIL 31 JULY 2014 SPANISH PAVILION Fallout Factory Fallout Factory will play host to Spanish Pavilion, a new and exciting collaboration between Fallout Factory and overseas Spanish galleries. UNTIL 21 SEPTEMBER 2014 ROSSETTI S OBSESSION: IMAGES OF JANE MORRIS Lady Lever Art Gallery Jane Burden Morris was the favoured model of painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This exhibition brings together compelling examples of this pictorial obsession. MONDRIAN AND HIS STUDIOS: ABSTRACTION INTO THE WORLD Tate Liverpool This new exhibition provides fresh insights into Dutch painter Piet Mondrian s practice. IFB delegates can get special 6 tickets every day after 3pm (usual price 10). UNTIL 5 OCTOBER 2014 NASREEN MOHAMEDI Tate Liverpool Discover the intriguing work of Indian artist Nasreen Mohamedi, considered a particularly significant artist within the modernist tradition. OPERA FOR CHINATOWN Duke Street Terraces A vibrant installation by The Sound Agents transforms the façade of Duke Street s vacant properties, depicting some of the people of Liverpool s Chinatown. ONGOING WALL WORK - PAUL MORRISON: URFORMEN Open Eye Gallery Liverpool-born artist Paul Morrison transforms the facade of the gallery and adjoining public space with a large monochromatic installation, Urformen. 3 JULY 2014 LIVERPOOL CONTEMPORARY ARTS FAIR World Museum Liverpool Buy and view art from over 50 leading national and international galleries. The fair includes Long Road to dom, original paintings and drawings by Nelson Mandela, and original work by Peter Blake, Noel Fielding and Yoko Ono. ARTISTS BOOK EXHIBITION Central Library This Exhibition of Artists Books brings together rare books from the Library s collection with the best of contemporary artists books. 4 JULY - 6 SEPTEMBER 2014 DOWN TOWN Bluecoat Display Centre Down Town is a unique opportunity for visitors to see and buy quality contemporary craftwork made in and/or about Liverpool. 4-6 JULY 2014 THE CARAVAN GALLERY The Bluecoat The Caravan Gallery returns with an exhibition of photos from its ever growing Is Britain Great? archive that documents the reality and surreality of modern life. 5 JULY - 26 OCTOBER 2014 SUSAN FORSYTH: ART SHEDS 2014 Victoria Gallery and Museum Artist Susan Forsyth will create a participatory exhibition inspired by the history and collection of the Victoria Gallery and Museum. Part of Big Dance 2014, a national programme of dance. 20 STORIES HIGH Various venues 20 Stories High Young Actors Company present three works: HEADZ from 3-5 July at Playhouse Studio, Standard at the Bluecoat from 16-17 July and Tales from the MP3 at the Everyman from 1-2 August. 19 JULY 2014 SENSE & SUSTAINABILITY The Bluecoat 50+ artists and performers from Hope Street Ltd show the Bluecoat s spaces in a way as never seen to explore environmental sustainability. 23-24 JULY 2014 GRACE AND THE SEA Unity Theatre Shipwrecks, brave lifeboat men and a living chorus of Anthony Gormley statues transport you to Another Place in this exciting celebration of an amazing landscape. ONWARDS Of course, Liverpool s cultural offering extends way beyond July 2014... From 15-31 August 2014, the city is set to rock with the Liverpool International Music Festival. In its second year, the festival, in the words of curator Yaw Owusu: is focused on three things; celebrating greatness, discovering the new and inspiring the next. We want people to discover the DNA of a global music city and be surprised and inspired by the collection and scope of artists, spaces, events and collaborations in place. Headliners include Ian Broudie and the Lightning Seeds, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Boy George. On 2 August, the city s LGBT community and friends, families and supporters take to Liverpool s streets for Liverpool Pride in a blaze of colour and music whilst raising awareness of the importance of a united local community. The theme for this year s event is Glam Fairy Tales, and music headliners include Katy B, Heather Small from M People and Scouse songstress Sonia. Looking forward to 25 May 2015, Cunard is planning a spectacular return to its spiritual home in Liverpool, to celebrate 175 years of service. The Cunard fleet, led by the spectacular flagship Queen Mary 2, will meet in the Mersey for the first time. Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria will join their illustrious sister in a special salute to Liverpool.
