Sir John Nelthorpe School Uniform and Appearance Policy Author Mr S Howe Last reviewed Spring Term 2018 Next review date Spring Term 2019 Consultations/Training All staff

At Sir John Nelthorpe School, we aim to achieve standards of excellence in all areas of school life including appearance. We believe that when worn correctly, the uniform represents the standards that the school expects to achieve. It says to the local and wider community that Sir John Nelthorpe School is a high achieving community where students understand the difference between the expectations of the world of work and how they dress for their social life out of school. We also feel strongly that it represents equality for all students. Wearing a smart uniform is an important factor in encouraging a disciplined ethos at Sir John Nelthorpe School. It is the policy of the school Governors therefore, that students shall wear school uniform as outlined in this guide; please note that fashion items are not permitted. School Uniform All students in Years 7 to 11 are expected to be dressed correctly on their journey to and from school, whilst at school and on school organised activities, unless otherwise instructed. There can be no exception to this rule and we look for the support of all parents to ensure this. Should parents have any problems regarding uniform, they should not hesitate to contact the school at any time. Boys Black school blazer with SJN logo School tie Black school trousers (straight full leg, not jean or skinny style) Shirt: White (long or short sleeved - worn tucked in and top button fastened) Grey / Black socks. Girls Black school blazer with SJN logo Navy blue striped school blouse (worn tucked in, collar inside blazer) Pleated black knee-length skirt / Black school trousers (straight full leg, not jean or skinny style) Black socks with trousers. White ankle socks or black tights with a skirt.

Outdoor Coat: Should be, as far as possible, a single subdued colour and plain material. They must not be of camouflage/military style, denim, leather (including leather look), fur (including faux fur) and/or decorated with names, pictures, logos, slogans or badges. Given that the students walk between buildings in all weathers, a coat which is both warm and shower proof is a good idea. Outdoor clothes including hats, scarves and gloves should not be worn inside and these may be confiscated. Hooded tops, sportswear, tank tops, gilets and cardigans are not to be worn in place of the blazer or coat and they will be confiscated and put in a secure place although the school does not accept liability for loss or damage of these items. The student s parents/carers will be required to collect items from the Student Reception. Jumpers: A plain black v neck jumper is allowed but may only be worn with the school jacket (blazer). This should not be worn in the summer term. Cultural Dress: the school supports students who wish to express their religious beliefs by wearing traditional, religious clothing providing that: a) the clothing does not cover the student s face thereby preventing the school from supporting the student s learning or it hindering the student s inter-personal development; b) the requirement to wear school uniform (where appropriate) is observed; c) the items of clothing do not compromise the health or safety of the student or other members of the school community; d) the items of clothing do not compromise the school s ability to discharge its duty to safeguard the protection of the student or other members of the school community; e) the items are plain black or white and not decorated with patterns, jewels or sequins. Footwear Shoes should be black sensible, smart and be able to be polished (not trainer style, no branded/logo adorned footwear, no adornments such as bows or metal features). No boots/any footwear that covers the ankle or has opened toes e.g. sandals. Technology Workshop Clothing White cotton apron Food & Nutrition Blue check apron

Football boots (girls) Blue Football Socks with triple white hoop (girls) All parents/carers are encouraged to provide their children with shin guards and gum shields to prevent injuries in Football, Hockey and Rugby. We strongly recommend that all items of clothing should be clearly labelled with the student s name.

Appearance In the interests of health and safety as well as ensuring a smart, appropriate appearance, the following apply: Jewellery, body decorations and accessories No visible necklaces or bracelets/bangles. One plain ring only. One silver or gold small stud per ear (no hoops). These can be worn in the earlobe only and not the top or the tragus of the ear. No facial jewellery, body piercing, necklaces, bracelets, badges/brooches, large decorated belts or accessories of any sort are permitted. No smartwatches are allowed, this reflects the Joint Council for Qualifications rules within examinations. Hair bands and bobbles should be plain, dark colour (brown, navy, black) and of a sensible size and should not include large flowers and ribbons. If your child chooses to wear non-permitted items of jewellery or hair accessories, they will be confiscated. The school does not accept liability for loss or damage of these items. Tattoos are not permitted. Make up: Make up is not permitted. Hairstyles: Extremes of fashion including patterns and designs cut into the hair, and hairstyles which involve multi and/or unnatural colours (red, purple etc.) are not acceptable; nor is the shaving of all or areas of the scalp. Extremes of length or marked contrast in colour will not be permitted. Those students not adhering to the rules on hair colour/fashion may be required to work in isolation until this has been rectified. Other: In the interests of Health and Safety; in particular due to practical subjects such as Technology, PE etc nail length should be kept to a minimum. Nail varnish and false nails are not permitted. Inappropriate nail length may result in a student not being allowed to participate in a particular activity. Facial hair should be shaved, cultivated beards or moustaches are not acceptable. Failure to comply may result in more serious sanctions.

Uniform Suppliers The majority of our uniform is available from several stockists in the area to give you options as to how to purchase. The only compulsory school logo badged items are the blazer, the boys tie, and the sports tops for PE. The girls blouse is most easily sourced from the official stockist. Any remaining items can be purchased from wherever you choose providing they meet the school s standard uniform requirements. To ensure the correct style of garment, please visit the official stockist website or outlet or contact the school before purchasing garments elsewhere, as any non-compliant styles or colours of uniform items will not be permitted. For new intake parents, we will display examples of the uniform and PE kit at the transition evening and will have information as to how you are able to purchase the items along with price lists. Help and guidance will also be available. The Official stockists of Sir John Nelthorpe School s badged items are Uniform Direct Direct ordering online via: http://www.uniform-direct.com/acatalog/sir-john-nelthorpe.html The Grimsby store is the main stockist of our uniform. The Gainsborough and Lincoln stores hold some items of uniform in stock however, all items can be ordered into the store of your choice. If purchasing a blazer from an outlet other than Uniform Direct, you must ensure it matches the style of the approved blazer. Uniform Direct are able to embroider a Sir John Nelthorpe logo onto blazer s for the price of 5.00. Parents/Carers are entitled to seek alternative providers for non-badged items of uniform, but due to the many variables between suppliers in terms of material, quality, colour-match etc. It is important to check the uniform details carefully on the Uniform Direct website before seeking the same item elsewhere in order to avoid incurred costs of purchasing the wrong style etc. We also keep one sample of each item of uniform at school for parents/carers wishing to check before ordering/purchasing from their chosen outlet. Monitoring and review The Governing body, supported by the Head Teacher will review this policy annually.
