Exhibition Roman Empire: Power & People A British Museum Tour Saturday 24 January to Sunday 10 May Admission Free Exhibition opening times: Mon to Sat: 10am - 5pm Sun: 12.30-4.30pm Last entry is 15 minutes before gallery closing time The McManus: Dundee s Art Gallery & Museum is the only Scottish venue for The British Museum s Roman Empire: Power & People touring exhibition. The exhibition brings together over 160 stunning pieces from the British Museum, to explore the story of one of the most powerful empires the world has ever seen. Alongside the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to see objects from Dundee s Roman collections, as well as objects from the National Museum of Scotland, and Perth & Kinross Museum Service. Classical Art: The Legacy of Ancients illustrates the enduring influence of ancient Greek and Roman culture through paintings, sculpture and ceramics from Dundee s nationally significant collection of fine art. #ClassicalArt

Join Makar W.N. Herbert, poet for the City of Dundee, as he shares a selection of Roman love poetry with you to celebrate St Valentine s Day. This specially themed event also includes live music performances, and a delectable feast of Valentine nibbles and drinks will be on offer from The McManus Café Bar. Over 18 s only. Talk Roman Scotland: Life on the Edge of the Roman Empire Wednesday 25 February 6.30-7.30pm The McManus Learn what life was like for both Romans and natives in occupied Scotland from Dr Fraser Hunter, principal curator of Iron Age and Roman collections at National Museums Scotland. Talk Roman Gask: Updates from the Frontier Wednesday 25 March 6.30-7.30pm The McManus Collections Unit Archaeologist Dr Birgitta Hoffman of the Roman Gask project will speak about new research on the frontier system of the Gask ridge and Strathmore, the earliest Roman land frontier in Britain. Family Event Roman Occupation Saturday 4 April 12noon - 4pm Broughty Castle Museum FREE No need to book, just drop in! Broughty Castle has been occupied by the Roman Army! Come along to this exciting event in the grounds of Broughty Castle, where The Antonine Guard will share with you what it was like to serve in the Roman Army beyond the northern frontier. Coins the British Museum Trustees of the British Museum This event will take place outdoors in the Castle s grounds. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

Mark Hall, Curator at Perth Museum & Art Gallery, introduces our holiday programme of family activities exploring the Romans love for board games. Find out about the 2000 year-old board games that can still be played today, the emperors and soldiers who played them; and take part in an exciting games tournament. Event Horus Hidden Plumage Saturday 25 April 2-3.30pm British Museum Conservation Scientist Joanne Dyer, presents the fascinating story behind the sculpture of the Egyptian god Horus and will describe how innovative imaging techniques have been used to determine its original colourful appearance. Event Roman Armour Thursday 7 May 3-4pm How did a Roman soldier based in Northern Britain dress? What weapons did he carry? Using evidence from archaeology and contemporary sculpture, Dr Jon Coulston, School of Classics, University of St Andrews, answers these questions and many more, giving a fascinating insight into life in the Roman Army. Swords & Sandals on Screen Sundays 11am Dundee Contemporary Arts We are delighted that DCA Cinema is running a series of special film screenings which coincide with the Roman Empire: Power & People events programme, and is part of their Focus on Film course with Dundee University Film Department. Screenings are open to the public, as well as course participants. Each film will be introduced by a lecturer.
