We are the premier provider of hassle-free parties. We host events for all ages. We create memorable events for the guests. All events are private which makes everything safer and more personalized. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar services? All events are private, and we have a highly-trained, superstar team to make the experience unique. Also known as the hassle-free party, which is just 395 on the weekend. Weekdays are always cheaper than our weekends. Why is shopping local important? We need to support the local businesses to help Des Moines by keeping the money within the community. It also helps increase job opportunities. But most of all, you get a personalized service that you can t get when the owners are not onsite and local. We are a very familyoriented business at the local level. Our goal as a local business is to make you immediately feel like a part of our family when you enter our doors. Our entire family works at Pump It Up. Smokey Row Coffee Owner: Monte Bennett Address: 1910 Cottage Grove Phone: (515) 244-2611 Website: www.smokeyrow.com How many years have you been in business? Smokey Row has been in operation since 1998, with the most recent addition to the family being the location on Cottage Grove, off of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, in October of 2009. What cuisine do you offer? We serve coffee and espresso drinks as one of our main attractions. These are complemented with a line of tea (hot or cold) and other cold drinks, such as soda, juice and bottled cola. We also have a good selection of hard-packed ice cream that we will use to make shakes and malts. We have a menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This includes hot and cold sandwiches, salads and soups. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar menu items? We aren t hard-focused on cutting corners to move more people through or searching for the cheapest solution on every product. We start ourselves higher by having higher quality products than some places use. We also have a process of actually preparing drinks instead of having them come out of a machine already finished. We roast all of our own coffee to ensure that we have a solid base to make our coffee drinks with. Why is shopping local important? Smokey Row has always functioned as a meeting place and common ground for any group in the community, from two people, to 20 to hundreds when someone political stops in. Shopping local keeps the community-mind active in a world that continues to push things farther away and make them more impersonal. Our view is to continue to help communities grow by being a place for people to gather. thank you, des moines! CITYVIEW JANUARY 10-16, 2013 Tell us what you think. This is my first year in business. What did you do before you started your business? In 2011, I graduated from the University of Iowa with a business and entrepreneur degree. After graduation, I worked with Menards as a hardware manager. How did you get into your business? I have always had a love for antiques and anything that has great patina and character. The one-of-a-kind pieces that come into my store each have their own unique story to tell. I wanted to create a store that would give these stories a chance to live and be appreciated. What products/services do you offer? American primitives, antiques, industrial home decor, salvaged/reclaimed and one-of-a-kind items, apparel, jewelry, hats, scarves and more. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar products? At Hinge, our mission is to provide the customers with items that rekindle happy memories and allow them to discover new, innovative ways to repurpose and incorporate vintage and reclaimed items into today s current styles. As soon as you step through the front door at Hinge, the ambiance greets you, and you know you are in for a shopping experience like no other. Our store allows you to fill your nostalgic desire and rediscover your roots by creating a personal statement that is as individual as you are. Why is shopping local important? Buying locally gives everyone in the community a chance to support local business. This, in turn, gives local businesses a chance for growth, development and return investments in their community. B6A, West Des Moines Phone: (515) 224-3937 Website: www.cherylsborrowedoccasions.com How many years have you been in business? Currently I have been open for two months, although this has been in the planning and acquisition of inventory stage for a year prior to opening. What did you do before you started your business? I had actually been unemployed for two years after working three years for a local nonprofit here in Des Moines. How did you get into your business? The idea of renting vs. purchasing formal dresses came out of seeing an economical need, especially in today s times. My daughter and I were actually looking for a Homecoming dress, but what she wanted was not what I felt I could pay for an item that was only going to be used once. My boyfriend s advice was: Why not rent a dress? That s when the idea developed. What makes your business unique from the chains that carry similar products? We offer prom, Homecoming, wedding dresses, flower girl dresses as well as mother of the bride/groom dresses for rent, with veils and underslips included. Arriving in February, we will also have tuxedos for rent. I also do minor alterations on the dresses.

Elements, Ltd. Owners: Melanie Parks, Marta Jones-Couch, Sheena Thomas Address 837 42nd St. Phone (515) 277-7421 Website www.elementslimited.com How many years have you been in business? It has been 17 years since we opened our doors in November of 1995. What products/services do you offer? We have a gallery featuring our own jewelry design work and that of other local and national artists, and we offer one-of-a-kind, small production and some well-made, mass-produced jewelry items. We offer custom design and repair and have a well-equipped studio in the same location. services? Jewelry chains may carry some of the mass-produced chains and earrings we do, but we have exclusivity in the Des Moines area with the jewelry designers and makers we carry. We meet artists at wholesale shows and develop personal relationships with many of them. We are the owners, and we meet people face to face. What is the most expensive and least expensive item you carry? Our most expensive piece at this moment is around 11,270, although we can easily outnumber that with an order for a large diamond or gemstone. We also carry silver chains and neckwires for as little as 20. Our average range is 70 and up. Other than your store, what local businesses are your favorite to shop/dine? We love Back Country Outfitters, Zanzibar s, La Mie, The Cheese Shop, Vom Fass and all the shops in the Roosevelt Cultural District. Why is shopping local important? Knowing that the money used for purchases and foods will stay in the community and multiply many times over is one reason shopping local is important, but we are also actively supporting our friends and neighbors. Boesen the Florist Owners: Address: Tom and Frank Boesen 3422 Beaver Ave., 3801 Ingersoll Ave., and ther convenient locations citywide Phone: (515) 244-ROSE (7673) Website: www.boesen.com How many years have you been in business? Since 1923 90 years this fall. What did you do before you started your business? We bought the business from our uncles and parents who bought it from their parents. Third-generation owners. Tom has never gotten a paycheck anywhere else. Frank was a CPA and accounting manager for Lutheran Hospital for a total of 10 years out of college before joining the company. What products/services do you offer? Full line of floral and related services for all occasions: holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, business gifts, just because, funeral memorials and a long history of setting the wedding and party scene in Central Iowa. We can help with any and all of your special event needs from tables and chairs, to tents, to lighting and, of course, flowers! What is the most expensive and least expensive item you carry? We believe that flowers always make the moment mean more: one, two or quite a few, we can help within any budget. Other than your store, what other local business is your favorite to shop/dine? Too many to mention, but we have noticed that local is nearly always better. We work hard to dispel the notion that the nationals (in any business) are always more affordable. You can be fairly certain that any local business that has thrived over the past half-decade has learned how to compete and beat the nationals. We don t necessarily think you must always buy local, we just ask that you at least shop local. In more cases than not, we believe you ll be glad you did.
