CHIRAG PANCHAL *, EKTA SAPKAL, JIGAR PADHIAR AND SWATI DESHMUKH Alard College of Pharmacy, Pune, Maharashtra ABSTRACT Cosmetics are incredible in demand. Cosmetic includes various formulations.among them, lip jelly is having very appreciable contribution in it. Lip jelly is having similar properties as compared to lipstick and lip balm which prevents the lips from environmental factors and colors them. Current market uses synthetic colorants in lip cosmetics which have various side effects. Nature is full of colors which are safer to human. So our team have targated different plants to extract natural colors from them and use for development of herbal lip jelly. Current formulation involves the development of lip jelly by using natural dye obtained from the seed coat of Bixa Orellana. It is evaluated for organolaptic properties like colour, odour, spread ability, ph, melting point, skin irritation etc. We can claim that developed formulation is having no side effects which can bechronically used by the women with great satisfaction. INTRODUCTION Now a day s world is moving towards the herbal products to live a healthy and satisfactory life. For this reasons the demand of dietary supplement is also increased which can be cultivated by biological and organic farming without using fertilizers and pesticides. So that use of herbal cosmetics is increased to take care of the health system 1.Natural products have been used as medicines from thousands of years. Many of them products are having pharmacological activity and its activity is proven and the drug is recognized as a human medicines 2.The word herbal indicates safety as compared to synthetic products which is having various adverse effects on human health. Herbal preparation like, herbal lipstick, lip balm, shampoo, etc having a similar property as compared to synthetic once and hence have well acceptance from the consumers 3, 4. Colouring lips are the ancient practice to enhance the beauty of lips and to give glamour touch to the face make up. For this the choice for shades of colour, textures, lusters have been changed and became wider. This can be observed from the lip jelly, lip balm, lipstick marketed in hundred of sheds of colours to satisfy the demand of women 5. In recent times lip jelly have been under scanner of many health watchers and it is found that lip jelly is often eaten away by user and hence the ingredient is swallowed accidently in the body of user in which the dye present in the lip jelly is dangerous to consumer in a mild form it is carcinogenic and can cause nausea, dermatitis and drying of lips. Because of this reasons the work is made to satisfy the need of healthcare system and consume by using natural dyeing agent like Bixa orellana pigments.bixa orellana (Bixaceae) is a native plan of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, and Colombia and exotic to India. It grows to about 5 to6 meters high and have a peculiar reddish saps about 10-30cm long initially green in colour which changes to red on ripening and it is fully covered by soft spines and opens in to two compartments on drying. Bixa plant is commercially grown for the high pigment content annatto in its seed coat 6, 7.The colour pigments isolated from the seed coat (annatto) of Bixa fruit is can be used in food colourant in which bixin is the major constituent of pigments which gives the red colour to the formulations 8.It is more preferable to replace synthetic colours with the naturally occurring dyes because of its non- toxic, biodegradable and eco friendly properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS (i) Collection of plant materials The herb used in the formulation was collected in September 2013 from medicinal garden of Alard college of pharmacy, Pune and authenticated by the Botanical Survey of India (No.BSI/Tech./2014/CP02). The seeds were used for the preparation of herbal lip jelly. (ii) Extraction of colorants 9 The dry powder of seeds of Bixa orellana is extracted with ethanol for 18hrs. After completion of extraction, the filtered extract is concentrated to reduce the volume1/10th. And remaining solvent is evaporated to get a reddish brown colour and it is stored in air tight container for further studies. METHODOLOGY FORMULATION OF HERBAL LIP JELLY The herbal lip jelly is formulated as per described 10. The ingredients used in the formulation are described in Table 1. Petroleum jelly and lanolin was melted and extract of herb is added and at the end of formulation orange essence is added as a flavouring agent and vanillin is added as a preservative and it is allowed to get a consistency at a room temperature only. The following criteria are established.good do not leave fragments, perfect application and no deformation of lip jelly.intermediate uniform, leaves the fragment, good application but little deformation.bad not uniform, leaves many fragments, difficult to apply and deformation 13. Melting point to determine the melting point the lip jelly is molten to fill in capillaries and allowed to cool to regain its original nature. Then capillaries were coupled with the thermometer and this coupled system is immersed in water at controlled temperature. The temperature at which the lip jelly is observed as fully molten that temperature point is noted as melting point ph parameter - The ph of formulated herbal lipstick was determined by using ph meter.skin irritation test - It was carried out by applying the product on the human skin for 10 min 12, 13. NLJ 1 having the excellency in colour appearance that is reddish orange, which is highly acceptable for lip cosmetics. Along with colour, it also has the perfume stability, perfect application and no deformation on spreading which proves its good spreadability. P - 39
Prepared Lip Jelly (NLJ 1) DISCUSSION Bixa Orellana was previously used in the preparation of Herbal Lipstick which was having similar properties with the marketed lipsticks will minimal adverse effect 9. Bixa Orellana is used as a natural colourant used in food preparations and its cosmetics previously, We have used natural ingredients to formulate a lip jelly along with natural dye obtained from the seed coat of Bixa orellana. This prepared lip jelly (table1) was evaluated (table2) from which formula 1 (NLJ 1) shows the satisfactory results. Hence from present and previous investigation, it was concluded that this formulated herbal lips jelly having minimal side effects and maximum cosmetic effect. CONCLUSION The research provides highlights on the use of herbal ingredients in the preparation of lip jelly having minimal and no side effects. The prepared lip jelly is having similar organolaptic properties as compared to synthetic one. Thus we can move towards the use of natural dyes to prepare many cosmetics like lipsticks, lip rouges, nail paints, etc. Hence the use of natural dye is step towards healthy cosmetics. REFERENCES 1.
