Event Report The Taiwan Textile Fairs in South Asia 2014 was held in New Delhi (Nov. 18-19), Bengaluru (Nov. 21-22) and Colombo (November 24-25). The Taiwan Textile Fairs in South Asia 2014 showcased the latest, stateof-the-art, high performance functional textiles to Indian and Sri Lankan apparel and garment manufacturing entrepreneurs. New products fabrics showcased at the platform were fabrics made out of coffee yarn, rainwear fabrics, leather auxiliaries for shoes and garments, functional and ecofriendly textiles with special properties like UV protection, odour resistant, etc. Despite the fair showing a slight decrease in number of participating companies compared to 2013, buyers from across India and Sri Lanka came to source and see the latest trends, innovation and designs which are being developed by Taiwanese manufacturers. The seriousness of the buyers can be judged from the fact that onsite orders worth US$ 450,000 were closed at the fairs with further business of around US$ 6 million expected from India and Sri Lanka. The Fairs in India and Sri Lanka saw more than 600 companies along with their sourcing, design and merchandising teams visit the fairs. These 600 companies ranged from exporters, importers and agents to buying houses, brands and large format retailers. Some of the leading brands and retailers in India that visited the fair in India were: Wills Lifestyle, Octave Clothing, Tesco International, Reliable Rainwear, Lifestyle International, Wildkraft, Raymond, Traverse, Van Heusen, Parx, Monte Carlo, Rupa, Jockey, Hanes, etc. Some of the leading exporters and buying houses in India that visited the fairs with their teams were: Orchestra Buying & Retail (India) Ltd, Tec Workwear Pte Limited, Coach New York, Asmara India, Bedouin England, Indian Design Exports, Gokaldas Exports, Karle International, Shahi Exports, Texport Syndicate, Newtimes Group, etc. Dr. Guan Lee, Executive Director of Taiwan Economic and Cultural Center and Dr. Lin, Director of Taipei World Trade Center visited the fairs in India and Sri Lanka respectively. The Fair in Sri Lanka was inaugurated on 24 November, 2014 by Dr. Yousuf Maraikkar, Executive Director of Sri Lanka Export Development Board along with heads and officials of Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association, Sri Lanka Apparel Sourcing Association, Joint Apparel Association Forum, etc. 3 3
In Sri Lanka, some of the leading exporters and sourcing companies that visited the fair were: Brandix Casualwear, Brandix Intimate, Brandix Textiles, MAS Fabrics, Hirdaramani International, Mas Active, MAST Global, JB Apparels, Emjay International, Star Garments, Crystal Martin, Hayleys MGT Knitting Mills, Voguetex, Linear Designs along with domestic brands like Amante, Avirate, Y & Y, Rough Shirts, Moffi, TW, etc. The fairs saw a positive response from buyers and more than 90% of the exhibitors felt this niche platform is a good opportunity to network with top apparel and textile exporters, buying houses, importers, brands, chain stores, etc. in India and Sri Lanka and would like to come back next year to strengthen their ties and connect with the companies whom they met at the fairs. 4 4
