Ask the Doctor Q Just a question with regard to sun protection. I mentioned to my massage therapist that even though I was wearing an SPF 30 last summer, I could see tan lines where my bra was. She told me that most fabrics offer little sun protection. If that s the case, shouldn t we be wearing sunscreen all over before we get dressed? Could this be why there are so many cases of skin cancer and shouldn t there be SPF in all body lotions? Margo Staniforth A Thank you for sending me this excellent question! The current recommendation by the Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation is to wear sunscreen every single day, and in every place the sun shines. I always recommend that people should limit their exposure during the hottest and sunniest time of day (between 10 4 pm) and seek shade whenever possible. Clothes do provide different levels of UV protection, depending on many factors. Dark colours generally provide more protection than light colours. Tightly woven fabric protects better than loosely woven clothing, and dry fabric is generally more protective than wet fabric. Be aware that covering up doesn t block out all UV rays. If you can see light through a fabric, UV rays can get through too. Finally, I always recommend that people use a stronger sunscreen (45 or greater) on the face. I remain most sincerely yours, Dr. Barry A. S. Lycka MD FRCPC Have a question for Dr. Lycka? A. 2016 A Revolution in Early Skin Cancer Detection Has Arrived! The Verisante Aura is our Procedure of the Month Detecting skin cancer in its earliest stages has always been a challenge for dermatologists, but now an amazing new technology has been developed. Dr. Lycka is one of the first in the world to offer the diagnostic tool known as the Verisante Aura. It offers a quick, non-invasive and reliable method for detecting skin cancer. The ability to detect skin cancer in its earliest stages gives doctors more treatment options and better outcomes for patients. The Verisante Aura is a spectroscopy system, which means it shines a special light on the skin. If skin cancer cells are present, the light will cause them to vibrate at a different frequency than normal cells. These vibrations are picked up by a mass spectrometer. This procedure is appropriate for anyone who is concerned about skin cancer. Do you have a family history, a large number of moles, a lighter complexion, or are just concerned about skin cancer in general? If so, you should book an appointment to check your skin using this device. Please note this procedure is not currently covered by Alberta Health. Phone us at 780.665.2595 to book an appointment today, and give yourself peace of mind about your moles.

Fun with Hot Cross Buns If you want to try your own, here is a great recipe! Easter falls in March this year, and with this special time, comes many different traditions and memories. One such tradition is the Hot Cross Bun, which is traditionally eaten on Good Friday. They are a spiced, sweet bun, made with currents or raisins, and are marked with a cross on the top to symbolize the Crucifixion. Did you know there are many superstitions associated with the Hot Cross Bun? Buns baked and served on Good Friday will not spoil or mold during the subsequent year. Giving a piece of the bun to someone who is ill will help them recover. Sharing a hot crossed bun with another is supposed to ensure friendship throughout the coming year, particularly if half for you and half for me, between us two shall goodwill be is said at the time. Hot crossed buns will protect you against shipwreck if taken on a sea voyage. The buns will protect against fires and ensure that all breads turn out perfectly, if hung in the kitchen. PREPARATION INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup warm water 1 pkg active dry yeast 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour 2 tbsp cinnamon 1 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp ground cloves 3/4 cup milk, warmed 1/4 cup melted butter 1 egg 1 egg yolk 1/2 cup dried currants 1/4 cup chopped candied peel, mixed Glaze 2 tbsp granulated sugar 2 tbsp water Icing 1/2 cup icing sugar 2 tsp water In small bowl, dissolve 1 tbsp of the sugar in warm water. Readers Share Their Condolences Hi Everyone This month, Dr. Barry and Dr. Lucie asked me to write and share a special note with you all. My name is Geishi, and I was a very special friend of Willie s. In fact, as the special companion to Dr. Barry and Dr. Lucie s grand-daughters Roxie and Sophie, Willie and I would get together at family functions, BBQs and Sunday night dinners. Meet Geishi! Like all of you out there, I am very sad that Willie has passed away. Many of you took the time to write special notes of condolence to our family, and I would like to say thank you. Here are just a few of the notes we received: Laurene wrote: I share your sorrow in the death of Willie. I love your newsletter, but I always read what Willie had to say first. A pet is a member of the family and they have unconditional love for us. One blessing is all the wonderful memories of Willie that will always be with you. Please put a picture of Willie in your office so you can always remember this wonderful dog. Kathryn wrote to say, My condolences to you and your family. Our family pets give us much joy and happiness in our lives and I know Willlie will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Marlene said: I was so to sorry to hear of the passing of Willie. I felt like I knew him through your numerous writings of his escapades. I am glad that you are going to write a book about his adventures and look forward to being able to purchase it in remembrance of Willie and in support of the Humane Society. Speaking of Willie s book, we are organizing it and will have the details on its release very soon. Please stay tuned. In the meantime, I hope to continue to bring you a little personal perspective of our family in months to come. I thought I would start by sharing a picture of myself with my two loyal friends Roxie and Sophie. Talk to you next month! Geishi Win an ipad Q What is the flower for the month of March? On the Lighter Side Sun Safety Presented by the Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation For many of us reality television shows are a big part of our TV viewing lives. The study doesn t prove that the shows drive women to tanning booths, but it does suggest there is a significant influence on the viewers and that these shows aren t promoting a healthy view on tanning. Remember, tanning is linked to a higher risk of skin cancer, and will seriously harm your health. You don t need to be a warm shade of bronze to be beautiful. Try to stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day and make sure you are covered up and protected with sunscreen when you are outside.
