THE UPPER CANADIAN BEARD CHAMPIONSHIP UPPER CANADA VILLAGE SUNDAY, SEPT. 16, 2018 CATEGORIES AND RULES The Upper Canadian Beard Championship will take place on Sunday Sept 16, 2018 at Upper Canada Village. Visit www.uppercanadavillage.com for more details of other events taking place that day. The Upper Canadian Beard Championship is a competition based on fun and creativity and infused with a historical spirit. Upper Canada Village s time period, the mid-19 th century, was a grand moment for male facial hair. It is said that Victorian men faced a range of challenges, from adapting to new working environments to being confronted by women who were beginning to find a voice. How did men respond? By cultivating massive beards! Categories There will be 7 different categories at the Upper Canadian Beard Championship at Upper Canada Village. For the sake of these categories styling aids is defined as any substance or item which contributes to the shape, colour, style, intensity, etc of the facial hair. This can include moustache wax, hair spray, hair cream, styling foam, hair gel, hair pins, rubber bands, hair ties, and the like. 1. Full beard Natural (no styling aids, no props): The beard as it grows. The full beard includes all facial hair, but allows for small amounts of cleaning in areas of low growth. Faces with some shaved areas (i.e. upper lip, space between moustache and beard, lower-half of face) will be considered Other Facial Hair 2. Moustache Natural (no styling aids, no props): The moustache as it grows. The more natural the better. Hair root growth should not be allowed to extend too far from the corners of the lips and moustache must be separate from other facial hair. Contestants with other facial hair may enter in the moustache category, but will be judged on moustache alone. 3. Other facial hair Natural (no styling aids, no props): Facial hair as it grows such as chinstraps, sideburns, face-shelves, etc which doesn t fit into categories 1 or 2. The more natural the better.

4. Fake Facial Hair Let your creativity go wild. Feel free to build on existing lady whiskers or peach fuzz. Judges will consider originality and creativity. Though open to all, this category is intended for women and children competitors. This will be taken into account when judging. 5. Full beard Styling aids and props permitted: Anything goes. Judges will consider originality and creativity as well as hair. 6. Moustache Styling aids and props permitted: Anything goes. Judges will consider originality and creativity as well as hair. Moustache must be separate from other facial hair. Contestants with other facial hair may enter in the moustache category, but will be judged on moustache alone. 7. Other facial hair Styling aids and props permitted: Facial hair such as chinstraps, sideburns, face-shelves, etc which doesn t fit into categories 5 or 6. Judges will consider originality and creativity as well as hair. Judging criteria Judges will be asked to determine which contestant s facial hair best enhances his or her overall appearance, style, and personality. In category 4 Fake Facial Hair as well as the categories which allow for styling aids and props, judges will be asked to consider originality and creativity as well as hair. Rules 1. Judging will take place on Sunday, September 16, 2018. The competition will start at 1:15 pm at Cook s Tavern in Upper Canada Village. Competitors must arrive at Cook s Tavern by no later than 1:00 pm on the day of the competition. 2. The competition will take place in 7 categories. Competitors will specify the category or categories in which they wish to compete when they register. Competitors may compete in more than one category, as long as they meet the requirements for all categories in which they enter. 3. On the day of the competition, competitors who do not meet the qualifications for the category in which they have registered will be placed into the correct category. The correct category for each competitor will be decided by competition organizers. 4. By registering for the competition, all competitors give their permission to the organizers and to the organizers designees that the competitors may be photographed, videotaped, and tape recorded and further that the organizers and their designees may use the photographs, video tapes, and audio tapes of the competitor for any purpose including commercial purposes.

5. There will be two judges for each category. Each judge will individually choose who they consider to be the top three competitors in each category and will rank them as first, second, and third place. A first place raking is worth five points, a second place ranking is worth three points, and a third place ranking is worth one point. Judges will then compare rankings and add all points together. The competitor with the highest total points will be the winner. In the event of a tie, the competition MC will act as the deciding judge. 6. The categories will be judged in the order listed above. 7. Judging will take place in a designated area. Any competitor not in the designated area at the time of judging will be disqualified. 8. The organizers reserve the right to modify these rules at any time. Any rule modifications will be announced publicly before the competition begins. 9. All decisions of the judges and organizers are final. 10. Discourteous, abusive, or unprofessional behaviour by a contestant may lead to disqualification at the organizers discretion. 11. Artificial facial hair is only permitted in category 7 Fake beards 12. All competitors must have completed a registration form before 1:00 pm on Sunday September 16, 2018. 13. There will be prizes!
