ED S NOTE EDITOR KOJO BAFFOE Scottish author JK Rowling, of Harry Potter fame, wrote: It is our choices... that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities. We are each, hopefully, on a journey to build the lives that we dream of. A lifelong expedition to carve out our unique space in the universe. Along the way, we are faced with a myriad of choices, always with consequences. I was taught that not making a choice is a choice in itself and that you can t run away from the consequences simply because, like an ostrich, you decided to stick your head in the ground and hope it would go away. Having a destination or purpose is like having a looking glass through which the what, why, where, when and how of your life become a little clearer, whether in relation to your career, your business, your family or yourself. Developing skills in various areas is the easy part. Too often, we plod through life unengaged because we ve lost sight of our purpose, which is one of reality s greater tragedies. When you are rudderless, anything is the right thing and any path is the wrong one. But, there is a bigger picture and, when encountering people like our cover star, Tebogo ProVerb Thekisho, you can t help but be struck by how clarity and purpose birth excellence and authenticity. I have had the privilege of engaging with Verb outside the industry and he truly is good people. I sincerely believe this is because he operates from a place of positivity, consciousness and awareness, recognising that every choice has a consequence. Our Powerhouse, Tebogo Mekgoe, COO of Acsa, also had a clear understanding of where he wanted to be and systematically took the necessary steps to get there. He has applied that perspective to everything he does at the company and continues to break boundaries. On the flipside, the digital reality we ve created as a planet is such that one can get easily lost amid the noise. We explore the consequence of allowing our smartphones and by extension, WHEN ENCOUNTERING PEOPLE LIKE OUR COVER STAR, TEBOGO PROVERB THEKISHO, YOU CAN T HELP BUT BE STRUCK BY HOW CLARITY AND PURPOSE BIRTH EXCELLENCE AND AUTHENTICITY. the world to take over all aspects of our lives. We also went out onto the streets of Jo burg to play with the Kaya FM team, the results of which you ll find in the fashion pages, where we also delve into summer style and accessories. As usual, there is a lot within these pages. The objective is to inspire, engage, celebrate and reflect on our lives, providing the tools to navigate our dayto-day routines. It is the end of the year. Most of us are, I hope, gradually bringing pg24 2014 to a close and preparing for some much-needed R&R and moments of reflection. It is also, after four extremely enriching and fulfilling years, the end of my time at DESTINY MAN. I would like to thank each and every one of you for the relationship that we have been able to build over the years, and hope you will continue to have and build with this magazine. I am now joining you on these streets. I would also like to thank Ndalo Media for the opportunity to contribute to this space. I will always cherish the time spent here. Choices aren t always easy, but they have to be made. It s time to jump into the next chapter of my life. I wish you all the best as you do the same. Have a wonderful festive season. Khotso! LETTERS FINDING MY CALLING remember reading my first issue of I DESTINY. I was blown away! I learnt so much about entrepreneurship and was inspired to follow my dreams of starting my own business. In 2011, I resigned from my job at Standard Bank to start GavCare Cleaning, a multi-purpose cleaning services company. My business journey has had its share of ups and downs and I ve learnt valuable life lessons along the way, especially when my cleaning business went under last year. This was just three months after I returned from Germany, where I completed a programme Mail: info@destinyman.com Website: www.destinyman.com Write to: Letters, PO Box 2077, Lonehill 2062 for young entrepreneurs. Through many bad business decisions and a partnership without shared vision, I lost all my life savings and died emotionally. While I was down and out, DESTINY MAN became my support as I feasted on articles in order to re-ignite my life purpose. I would work at a friend s tuck shop just so I could earn enough money to buy my favourite magazine. Late last year, I discovered my true purpose in life and began using my passion to change people s lives. Through a concept called Motivational Finance 101, I was able to fuse my love for motivational speaking with financial planning. I realised that I was meeting people who found themselves disconnected from their life purpose and it was difficult for me to reach them with regard to financial planning. I also mustered the courage to start writing my first book, Fast 4 Success, and have started writing daily Facebook blogs to inspire, motivate and educate people about financial issues. On 4 February next year, I will be hosting the first #IAMABUZINESS workshop at 11034 The opinions expressed in letters are not necessarily those of DESTINY MAN or Ndalo Media. In addition, I am planning to launch an online jobs portal. Keep up the fantastic work. You are changing lives! Gavin Mkhabela, via email SUIT YOUR I can t say that I always agree with his sentiments, but it is rare that a Justice Malala column leaves me unmoved in terms of thought and emotion. His Revolutionary Suits piece in the November 2014 issue was similarly inspiring. Nelson Mandela, Patrice Lumumba and Martin Luther King Jr are all correctly recognised as great leaders, but only Madiba (with his flamboyant shirts) is seen as a style icon. It got me thinking about the importance of image as a defining characteristic of a leader. However, Malala lost me when he wrote about a good suit being the garb of choice for the man at the helm. A suit may be de rigueur for Western statesmen, but what about the dashiki, thawb and Nehru jacket in other parts of the world? Many African, Arab and Indian leaders eschew suits for traditional attire. Che Guevara and Gandhi (in later years) didn t wear suits and Gaddafi wore Bedouin clothing on state visits. Yes, even red overalls can make a powerful statement. Afrika Nkosi, Nongoma MAZWAI IS THE MAN T MAN is your best one yet. It was great to see Andile Mazwai on the cover. This ambitious man has long been a hero of mine. I have no doubt that he will take SA s stokvel industry to new levels of success. Your Power of 40 report is packed with inspiring men. I know I will have made it when I am in the company of such incredible individuals! I also really enjoyed the nautical fashion shoot. I m looking forward to investing in some classic pieces this summer. Keep up the good work!
