Styling, dressing and finishing techniques and methods 5.1 Current techniques for creatively styling, dressing and finishing hair and the types of products, tools and equipment available for the techniques in the range and the effects they can create Ref: Handout.5.1 Tell learners that before a stylist or barber can create a range of creative images, they need to have a starting point. State that this point is often rooted in an existing technique or style. Explain that a stylist can take a technique or style and develop it into something innovative, different, motivational and exciting. Say that the current techniques for creative styling include: cutting perming relaxing colouring styling and dressing adding hair plaiting twisting locksing shaving creating patterns in hair Ref: Activity.5.1 Using the design plan completed in Research.2, ask learners to: identify the current techniques they used (or plan to use) state the ways in which they developed the techniques to ensure they were creative (or plan to) Page 64 - Unit - Session 5. list the products, tools and equipment that they used to achieve the effect (or plan to use) Remind learners that while it is said that there is nothing new in fashion, it is the ways in which traditional techniques and classic styles are adapted that makes them creative. 5.2 How added hair can be used to enhance and support a design image and the design and styling limitations of different types of added hair Ref: Handout.5.2 Explain to learners that one of the ways of developing an existing style into something more creative is to attach additional hair. Adding hair can make the overall effect more innovative. Tell learners that there are many ways in which additional hair can enhance and support a design image. It can: provide length add colour add texture provide curl variation add bulk provide padding to support the natural hair Explain that when a stylist chooses to use additional hair in a design, they must decide whether to use human hair or synthetic hair. State that each has its advantages and disadvantages, but the most important consideration is to choose hair that is fit for purpose. Suggestion Have a range of human and synthetic hair for the learners to look at and compare. 5.3 The types of non-conventional items that may be used when styling hair, the effects they can create and the manufacturers instructions for the specific products, tools and equipment intended to be used Ref: Handout.5.3 Say to learners that, when developing a creative design plan, they should try to avoid restricting themselves to the techniques or tools that are commonly available. Explain that it is sometimes not possible to achieve a specific effect from using a mainstream or standard approach they may need to widen their scope and outlook. Page 66 - Unit - Session 5. Explain that it may be possible for learners to combine traditional ideas with innovative tools. For example: using paper neck strips or cloth to wrap hair laying hair inside foils which can be folded into zigzags and using straightening irons to heat the foil and change the shape of the hair inside it perm rods to form a variety of curl sizes cone shaped formers to achieve a variation in curl size hair wrapped around U shaped metal rods, covered in foil and using straightening irons to heat the foil and change the shape of the hair inside it Emphasise to learners that the only restriction that can be placed upon them when using non-conventional items to style hair, other than practicality of application, is their own imagination. Ref: Training block Non-conventional styling equipment Have a range of non-conventional styling products for the learners to look at and demonstrate their use on a training block. Styling and finishing products Say that there is a great variety of styling and finishing products available. Tell them that their choice of product is dependent on the job that they want it to do. State that texture, colour, volume and movement can be introduced into a style by the application of the appropriate product but that, if the wrong product is used, it could have a detrimental effect on the overall effect. Explain that a creative hair design may suffer under the hot lights of a photographic studio and stress that a good styling or finishing product could make the difference between success and failure of the shoot. State that it is sometimes necessary to prepare models for a hair show some time in advance of them being shown and, if the finishing product cannot support and hold the style, then the outcome may not be quite as planned. Advise learners that manufacturers provide information and instructions on the best use of their products and that, by following these instructions, stylists can save time and avoid stress. Explain that many mistakes or failures can be attributed to the wrong choice or misuse of products. Emphasise to learners that it is particularly important to read and follow manufacturers instructions when using tools and equipment. Remind learners that misuse of electrical items may cause damage to the hair or scalp. Ref: Research.5 Ask learners to investigate a range of products that can be used when designing a range of creative images. They should be asked to identify the features and benefits of the products and make reference to any special health & safety warnings that the products have. The learners should be encouraged to take the research a step further by using and evaluating the range when producing their creative images. Ask the learners to write a short report about their findings. Now use the Learner Check for Session 5 to check the understanding of the learners. Use Research.5 to encourage independent learning.
