After a year of colleagues and bosses and minions you know where you squeeze into the queue the OCP is where everyone else gets to gang up and avoid being around those people who use embarrassing work-speak like let s take this offline. Don t think that s embarrassing? Then you re that person. Go and pour yourself a big drink right now. And pull yourself together. I ve been to enough OCPs in my many reindeer-antlered years to have rules about such Champers-soaked shindigs. Well, rule, really it s singular. Want to hear it? Never be the first or last to leave. The first-to-leaves, while dignified and possibly a little smug about their truly excellent life choices, have never ever in The Unabridged History Of All That Is Sacred About Parties been missed and, worse, they get none of The Good Stuff. That s where our deputy ed, Wanita, and I are different. She really will be headstanding on the water s edge and perfecting her pullups at the adjacent playground. I just want to stretch out on a towel in the sand, reading something of deliciously questionable provenance. Fortunately, life is about nothing if not balance. Happy holidays.
