Essential consultation and planning components Understanding the clients needs This is your opportunity to meet with your client and discuss ideas and gather the event information you need to be able to plan the perfect look. You will need strong communication skills and a friendly personalised approach as every client is unique. By offering a professional, customized make-up and hair consultation you will be able to develop a hair and make-up style concept that suits the type and style of event, complements your clients facial features, bone structure and requirements. You may be asked to provide services for any of the following events : weddings formals fashion Shows beauty pageants theatre shows/on-stage productions awards shows, conferences/other corporate events. Discuss with your client the type of look that they require: high impact make-up & hair customized for shows (dramatic or high fashion) glamorous party make-up & hair themed looks (i.e. period looks like 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s ) special character imitation looks (i.e. celebrity look-alikes) wedding hair and make-up (soft and natural look) romantic and pretty elegant look. Decide on the tools you will use to review various looks with your client. Consider using samples of your own work as this will help to increase your client s confidence in your ability. You will find the following useful: hair and fashion magazines photographic portfolios fashion/beauty websites. Timing and costing services The timing and costing of the service you provide to your client will vary depending on the nature of the event, the location and whether the service is for an individual or a group. While consulting with the client and reviewing possible hair and make-up designs it is important that the client also is given information on how long the service will take and the price. Many stylists offer pricing for individual services and also packages which incorporate multiple services at a reduced rate. You will also need to decide whether you will charge a fee for your consultation. It may be an idea to include your consultation with a trial service. Where the style requires the use of hairpieces, additional costs will be involved. You may decide to request a non-refundable deposit when booking services for an event, particularly when you will be working with a group or in a location other than your salon. Travel expenses may also be added to your price. Statement of Attainment Hair and Make-up Stylist Reference: Plan services for special events Page 8 of 18.
Trialling hair and make-up designs The length of trials will vary depending on the event and the number of people involved. You may be required to travel to another location or have your client visit you in the salon. It is always a good idea to suggest to your client that they schedule their hair and make-up trial when they have somewhere special to go so that they can wear the unique look before the event. After the trial, colour schemes, techniques, tools and preferences should be recorded on a head sheet and face chart, along with photographs of the final look so there is a visual record of the look created. This will enable you to recreate the desired look on the day and also make adjustments where required. Remember to also confirm your clients contact details at the trial. Offering your clients additional services Depending on your work setting, professional history and current technical skills you may be able to offer your client additional services required for the event. In many cases the client may ask for these or you may identify the need for them during the consultation. If you are working in a salon, you may be able to accommodate the client however where you specialise solely on hair and make-up styling it is handy to have a network of referral contacts for services that you may not be able to provide yourself. This can prove to be great for your business as often other professionals can also recommend clients to you. Additional services may include the following: hair colouring hair lightening chemical curling chemical straightening hair treatments scalp treatments manicure and pedicure services hair extensions facials hair removal spray tanning eyelash extensions eyebrow shaping and tinting. Consider how you will schedule additional services for your client prior to the event. Generally hair and skincare maintenance services can commence several months before the event to ensure that the hair and skin are in optimum condition. Otherwise one week to three days prior to the event is usually a suitable timeframe for these services. Include the promotion of after service maintenance products when planning services for special events. Products such as hairsprays and pins are often required for events such as weddings where the style must last several hours. Lipstick and powder are also a good idea for the clients touch up purse.
