8 A Minute With Michelle Dr. Lycka s daughter, Michelle Jeannotte, is a Nurse Practitioner at Barry Lycka M.D. As some of you know, I became a mother on January 7, 2016. We welcomed our beautiful baby Zachary at 5:35am. Life has not been the same since then and I would not have it any other way. Yes I am more tired than I have ever been, feel like at times I might be going crazy, and still have baby weight to lose, but I believe my heart has become fuller than it has ever been. I feel that being a mom will make me a better nurse practitioner. I fully plan on returning to work full-time after my maternity leave is done. In the meantime, I have been working a bit at the clinic, keeping my skills up and attending conferences. The reason I can do this is my awesome support system. My spouse is, and always has been, super supportive of my career and has been a hands-on parent since day one. I also have amazing sisters, an incredible mother and mother-in-law, and friends who are experiencing motherhood for the first time as well. I know now what the expression It takes a village really means. I need my village. Without my village I do not think I can achieve anything close to a work-life balance. I want to continue to work so when my baby is older and more self sufficient, I will have something for myself. I believe this will give my son a strong female role model in his life. Becoming a mother has made me more caring and compassionate. It also has helped me become even more empathic, as I now know that being a mom means you would do anything for your kids. 10 Woman2 WARRIOR June SATURDAY 18 2016 arrives in Edmonton On Saturday, June 18th, 2016, Easter Seals Alberta, an organization that supports Albertans with disabilities and medical conditions, is uniting women from across Edmonton and area as they register for Woman2Warrior, a women-only charity obstacle adventure race. This race raises funds to send over 1,200 kids and young adults to Easter Seals Camp Horizon, where they enjoy a unique summer camp experience and succeed in ways they never imagined possible. Woman2Warrior is an optional timed walk/run covering 5 km of trails, track, and grass. The obstacle race is meant to push boundaries and help women step out of their comfort zone much like Easter Seals individuals with disabilities and medical conditions. Harriet Tinka Harriet Tinka, Founder of Empowered Me (formerly called Empowered Youth), helps organize the obstacle event. A huge supporter of Easter Seals, Harriet is beyond excited to see this obstacle course arrive in Edmonton. Harriet is encouraging women of all ages and fitness levels to rise to action with their strength, determination and courage to challenge the obstacle course and help support Easter Seals Alberta.
