Date: 18 th & 19 th June 2016 Week #3 A Champion is always READY Champions playground is where the fun never ends. This week, we bring into GKidz non-toxic face/body paint and mask-making. This Do-It-Yourself (DIY) session will bring value-added kinaesthetic experience and an appreciation for creativity. Unleash the inner artist and invent the most original masks for the finale battle. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Children will understand the importance of patience during the process of making their own face/body paint. A champion is never gives up midway a champion always sees through what he/she started to completion. Readiness and preparation are also crucial elements in making a champion. The lesson is designed so that children will engage actively in planning and designing their own masks for the final masquerade. Note to Leaders As this week s craft involves scissors and hot water, leaders must be alert and wary of safety of children at all times. Leaders should encourage and advocate creativity beyond the templates provided by the appendices. Leaders please bring thermos flask for your group to hold the hot water to melt the crayons. Do not allow mixing of crushed crayons colours Instruct children to break up their crayons (if not yet crushed) Leaders will pour 1tsp/5ml of coconut oil into the plastic canister for the children. (Pic 4) Distribute chopsticks as stirrer to the children Lay the hot water-filled aluminium tray in the centre of the group (4 children per tray) Instruct the children to place their plastic canister in the tray with hot water (Pic 5). Use the chopstick to hold down the plastic canister as it might float on hot water. Continue to stir throughout utes. Mixture is ready in utes. Remove plastic canister from the hot aluminium tray. Leave at the side to cool. Mask-making Time 3 4 Objectives For the children to unleash their creativity and experience the joy making their own masks. Materials (Provided by GKidz) Mask templates: 1 set of laminated mask outlines (9 designs available) for each group. Mask add-ons: 2 sets of laminated mask add-on outlines (per group). 2 pieces of multi-coloured self- adhesive foam (A5 size and must be different colour) per child. Scissors, pens, White elastic band (pre-cut, one per child), black marker pen (2 per group), double sided tape (one roll per group) How to Make? Leaders please distribute 2 pieces of A5 self-adhesive multi-coloured foam per child in your group. Children will use 1 piece of their A5 self-adhesive multi-coloured foam for main mask body. They will choose the shape they want, use the template to draw on the reverse side of the foam and cut out the shape of the mask (the shapes are in the Appendix). Leaders please ensure that the children are done cutting the body of their mask before going on to the add-ons for their masks. Children will then use the other piece of their A5 self-adhesive multi-coloured foam to cut out all the add-ons that they want to stick onto their masks. Note: leaders should encourage their children to share their leftover pieces of coloured foam amongst themselves if they want to add more colours than was allocated to them. When children are done leaders please help to make a hole at the sides of mask (by using a pen) to string the elastic band. Children can also use the black marker pen to outline the markings on certain masks/logos. Copyright 2016 by GKidz, FCBC Page 4
Prepare group body art & mask Group Parade 1 1 40 min Objective Create a group identity to form a formidable champion group ready for next week s face off. How to Play? Everyone in the group will dress up by putting on their individual masks and make use of the face paint to paint motifs/designs on their arms and legs (because a champion s armour involves dressing the entire body). As every child s mask will be different in a group, children are to think of a theme for their group by designing their arms and legs with body paint. The entire group will then parade their group s outfits (body painting) on stage/platform. Leaders should appoint one child to be the spokesperson for the group who will describe briefly the theme behind the group s armour (body painting), and how each of their outfits are related to one another. Note: Leaders please help to brainstorm a running theme for the group s outfits (bodypainting) with the children Select themes on positive qualities and characteristics of a champion (e.g. resilience, strength, courage). *Leaders need to keep the masks for their group for next week. Ask the children to write their names on the reverse side of the mask. And keep the face paint for next week too. Copyright 2016 by GKidz, FCBC Page 5
