Suspending Particles Suspension is by far the most common technical help topic for particles. Essentially, putting particles into stable suspension is the same regardless of the type of particle. They all behave according to Stokes law. Floratech recommends using a crosspolymer thickener such as carbomer, xanthan, gellan, or other agent that creates polymeric links throughout the continuous phase. This creates a net or matrix which, if formulated properly, results in a stable suspension across a wide range of temperatures. Raising the viscosity of the continuous phase does not prevent, but only slows separation. Attempting to match the specific gravity of the particle to the continuous phase (to give neutral buoyancy) is only effective if the formula does not experience any change in temperature (dissimilar expansion coefficients will ensure that the specific gravity will not be equal at different temperatures). Description Florabeads are hard, free-flowing microspheres of jojoba esters (rice bran wax or carnauba wax beads are also available) delivering gentle yet effective exfoliation. Florabeads are available in a variety of colors (see back cover) and a size range of 150-600 microns. Efficacy Florabeads are just as effective as other commonly used mechanical exfoliants (fig. A). However, Florabeads do not cause irritation or microlaceration as do others. Florabeads actually deposit jojoba esters onto the skin (fig. C). The difference is a gentler skinfeel which users notice (fig. B). Applications Florabeads are appropriate for body and facial scrubs, shower gels, hand and foot washes, et. al. Florabeads have been successfully incorporated into systems containing surfactants and/or alcohols. Florabeads have been used in cosmetic products since 1986. Florabeads are smooth spheres, unlike other common exfoliatives which may cause irritation and microlaceration to the skin. Florabeads are as effective, yet cause much less discomfort than these other exfolatives. Florabeads also deposit a layer of jojoba esters on to the skin (analytical methods available upon request).
