Art Nouveau Influenced by Arts & Crafts movement. French for new art. Most popular in Britain and Europe. Gustav Klimt and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It is considered now as an important transition between historicism and modernism. Flowing lines and organic forms representing the female form, flowing out like blossoming flowers. Echoed the romantic period with the introduction of the S shaped corset. Channeled the ornamentation of Japanese style.
Bauhaus Based in Germany from 1919-1933. Pure, emphasised straight lines, smooth slim forms. World War 1 s poverty and inflation positively impacted the movement. MEMPHIS The name of a group of designers that established themselves in Milan in 1981. The main designer name attached to this movement was Ettore Sottass. Memphis was concerned in the practical objects of everyday life, the mass production of such objects and their promotion through advertising. Influences from comic strips, films, punk music and the combination of materials. They were characterised as witty, stylistic almost fisher price looking, exaggerated their fast pace of interior fashion in the 80 s. The Memphis group introduced a new understanding of design, the main purpose being bold and witty rather then functional. The groups innovation and boldness was depicted by their bright colours. Many designers shunned the functional in favour of the funky especially in Europe.
Pop Art Key Dates: 1950-1960 This movement was marked by a fascination with popular culture reflecting the affluence in post-war society. It was most prominent in American art but soon spread to Britain. In celebrating everyday objects such as soup cans, washing powder, comic strips and soda pop bottles, the movement turned the commonplace into icons.
Minimalism This very literal interpretation of the word Minimalism, i.e., literally reducing clothes to almost nothing, is perhaps the reason why the term has been through so much abuse. Everything that is monochromatic and stark, even when it comes to t-shirt and jeans ensemble are now deemed Minimalist. fashion is simple and sanitised, androgynous rather than objectifying.
