City Sues Fillmore Heritage Ceter Developer City Attorey Deis Herrera filed suit o August 16 agaist developer Michael E. Johso who built the Fillmore Heritage Ceter for more tha $6.5 millio the city claims Johso owes for a loa that helped build the complex. The years of excuses are over. Time s up, Herrera said i a statemet aoucig the lawsuit. Sa Fracisco taxpayers eed to be made whole. The city made this loa i good faith ad has give Mr. Johso every chace to pay back Sa Fracisco taxpayers, Herrera said. Sa Fracisco has worked with Mr. Johso at every tur. Mr. Johso has ever held up his ed of the bargai. At a public meetig i May 2016, Johso told the audiece that, i effect, the project had bee thrust upo him. After Yoshi s o Fillmore declared bakruptcy, Johso decided to ru the club ad restaurat himself. I made aother mistake, he said. We decided to try to resurrect it ad create The Additio. He added: We foud out that operatig that 28,000-square-foot facility was very difficult. We wet six moths. We could t make it work. We had to close. FILLMORE BEAT It s Swak No More By Chris Barett Chage comes slowly at the itersectio of Califoria ad Presidio. The Jewish Commuity Ceter, the S.F. Fire Credit Uio ad Ella s, the popular breakfast spot, have shared the corer for decades. So it was a surprise whe what has bee the Swak Bar i the Laurel I o the ortheast corer for early a decade recetly appeared with a ew ame, LAUREATE. It also sports a ew look, a ew barteder ad a covivial 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. happy hour, durig which cocktails are skillfully made, geerously poured ad reasoably priced. I m o poet, but Laureate has a ice, quiet vibe. It also has a followig of loyal locals who ve bee comig sice its G Bar days, stayed with it through the Swak years, ad like the optio of curlig up with fried i cotemporary coversatio-friedly furiture clusters, cozyig up ear the fireplace or sittig at the bar o comfy leather stools. Michelle Nguye, who s makig a retur appearace as a afteroo barteder after a four-year absece, warms up the place o foggy days with her smile ad to-the-rim cocktails. Because it s small ad itimate ad attached to the logstadig Laurel I, the ew Laureate retais its ligerig ambiace as a cozy eighborhood bar ad trystig veue. Raucous it s ot; the loe TV is mostly switched off. It s a eighborhoody, obodybothers-you kid of place. Greg has bee stoppig by for years. It s ot loud ad crowded it s the perfect atmosphere for a bar, he says. Greg favors Taqueray gi ad Agostura bitters a Pik Gi. Sam is sittig at the bar, tappig out some corporate prose o her laptop, sippig a Grey Goose up with a twist ad waitig for three frieds, who suddely burst i smilig. The four wome retreat to the sofas ad order up. A Margarita requested straight up arrives filled with fresh lime juice, a touch of agave syrup ad rimmed with spice salt, $10. A sack of six golf-ball-sized meatballs soaked i barbecue sauce is a bargai at $6. Baco-wrapped dates ad deviled eggs are also o the meu. A Califoria chardoay ad caberet ad a Prosecco are $7 durig happy hour, while a small selectio of draft beers from Sa Fracisco s Fort Poit Brewery are priced at $6 for a husky pour. BEYOND BAGELS: The upmarket bagelry at 1520 Fillmore, WISE SONS, has beefed up its meu with ew deli sadwiches. The revived meu, which looks ad reads like Brighto Beach circa 1952, leads off with coriader ad pepper-crusted pastrami smoked over hickory, or hot cored beef that s bee bried for a week with garlic. Both are piled betwee slabs of Wise Sos homebaked Jewish rye, with a pickle, for $11.50. The there s the classic Reube: pastrami or cored beef with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, Russia dressig, this time o toasted Jewish rye, for $12.50. Toss i coleslaw ad you have a messy but delicious Number 19 at $12.50. For somethig a bit tamer, the Club Sadwich marries smoked turkey with crispy pastrami ad a smashed avocado for $12.50. Oy. The Sos have wisely diversified ethically, too. The ew meu icludes a Chiese chicke salad sadwich o toasted challah bread for $13. The late, great playwright Neil Simo would be proud. a-ti-ci-pa-tio: The fall opeig of NOOSH i the former Thai Stick space hailed by eater.com as oe of the doze most aticipated restaurat opeigs i the coutry is ow slated for year-ed. But a bit of ews escaped from behid the butcherpapered widows at Pie ad Fillmore. What s described as a fie, fast casual diig cocept will also offer home delivery of progressive Califoria cuisie with a easter Mediterraea ifluece, says co-ower JOHN LITZ, who s still promisig the prices will be reasoable. A CHRISTMAS GIFT: Earlier this year the HOTEL KABUKI i Japatow uderwet a magificet makeover, addig a splashy ew bar ad a reimagied lobby. Now its ew marquee restaurat, origially touted to ope year-ed 2017 ad the first-quarter of this year, will ope at Christmas. The hotel has siged a deal with KIN KHAO, chef at the hot Micheli-starred Thai fusio spot i the Hilto Parc 55 Hotel ear Uio Square. Meawhile, beware of a $114-a-ight lowball room rate beig floated aroud tow by Trivago, the heavily hyped hotel bookig egie. FOOD & WINE Nearig 40, La Med Still a Work of Heart By Shelley Hadler I the very affordable 1970s, the Fillmore was home to workig artists, icludig photographer Edmud Shea. Best kow for his collaboratio with coceptual artist Bruce Coer ad his book covers for eighbor ad acclaimed writer Richard Brautiga, Shea s work ca still be see i the eighborhood today. Approach La Mediterraee restaurat at 2210 Fillmore, ad hagig just to the right of the door is a large framed photograph of a champage bottle o ice, with ope splashed across it. O the reverse, the same bottle is show upeded i the ice bucket, with the message closed directly below. Though champage might seem a bit upscale for this simple eighborhood spot, it reflects both Shea s quietly bo vivat lifestyle ad ower Levo Der Bedrossia s desire for a place at oce humble ad idulget. Shea moved easily betwee his artistic frieds ad Sa Fracisco society, where his iate charm was ot lost o the ladies. I its ow way, La Mediterraee has the same crosscultural ease still, after almost 40 years, drawig a mix of creative locals ad toy deizes of Pacific Heights. Shea was a fixture at La Mediterraee s tiy bar, schmoozig with workers ad customers ad fueled by a steady flow of espresso. Der Bedrossia remembers Shea s high, ifectious laugh ad blue-eyed beam. You would hear that laugh across the room. He could talk with ayoe, seemigly edlessly. He was a kid of eighborhood ambassador, Der Bedrossia says. I was much more of a itrovert, so I reached out to the eighborhood with my little cafe. It was both my busiess ad my persoal work of art. The first thigs I hug o the walls came from my apartmet. This place has my sweat, my tears ad my heart i it. Shea brought me to the restaurat i its first year, 1979, ad I was charmed by both the atmosphere ad the food. Ever sice it opeed, La Med has bee a staple i the ever-chagig assortmet of eateries that dot the Fillmore corridor. Ulike the tredy spots that come ad go, it has offered mostly the same dishes for all its years. Whe I imagied the kid of cafe I wated, I kew it eeded three thigs: good atmosphere, good food ad good prices ad with atmosphere, I iclude service, says Der Bedrossia. The friedliess ad skill of my servers are what create a welcomig place. I also kew I did ot wat to micromaage my staff. So I had to hire people that I could trai ad trust to ru it well. His hads-off yet urturig style clearly works. Gustavo Villareal, a cook, started at La Med at age 16 ad is ow a gradfather. His geeral maager, Alicia Vade Heuvel, bega as a server 20 years ago. I tell all my staff the same thig: Serve people the way you d like to be served, Der Bedrossia says. This lesso clearly was ot lost o Arthur Bedikia, a PHOTOGRAPHS BY SUZIE BIEHLER La Med waiter of 20 years. He greets regulars with a hug ad commets o the growth spurts of childre quickly becomig adults. Ad he chats with everyoe. O a recet Saturday ight, Bedikia touched o Der Bedrossia s roots: He s Armeia, bor ad raised i Lebao. Bedikia is also of Armeia descet, ad a rare figure i this trasiet tow: He was bor ad raised i the Suset, ad lives there still with his ow family of three. I his hads, service has the feel of a magic trick, as plates appear with a swift flourish. He is a essetial part of this warm eviromet, ad the warmth is as sustaiig as La Mediterraee s well-practiced fare. La Mediterraee ower Levo Der Bedrossia (left) ad the photograph by Edmud Shea that has bee welcomig diers for early 40 years. O my first visit i 1979, I fell i love with the chicke cilicia, a three-bite versio of a Morocca bastilla. The fillig braised chicke ad almods flavored with ciamo, sugar, cumi ad turmeric is wrapped i layers of crisp, buttery phyllo dough. To my delight, this treat is still as good, if ot better, tha it was o my first samplig almost four decades ago. Ad the torshi tart, bright pik beet ad turip pickles still make a ideal accompaimet to the richess of the cilicia ad their other phyllo-wrapped delicacies. Other comfortig dishes, such as the lamb lule ad the chicke pomegraate, hold up equally well. Swimmig agaist the tredy tide, this is go-to food i a go-to eviromet, both delicious ad depedable. Ad it will likely edure for a good while loger. I ca see myself here for at least aother five years, says Der Bedrossia, who is 67. NEW NEIGHBORS SCHOOLS A Iovative New Academy Opes A alterative school for purpose-drive tees welcomes its first classes of studets Creatig a Silico Valley of Educatio I a TEDx lecture at the Uiversity of Chicago o The Creatio of Coscious Culture Through Educatioal Iovatio, Michael Strog (above), fouder of the eighborhood s ew Academy of Thought ad Idustry, discussed the eed for chage i educatioal istitutios. A excerpt: If we wat to develop extraordiary huma capabilities, we eed to allow cool ad iovative brads of huma developmet to develop. We eed to fid ways to get a lot more cash ad resources goig ito cool lifestyle programs. So the way I see this happeig is that if we could apply iovatio dyamics like what happeed i techology. If we could have people who are extraordiary at gettig people to laugh, people who are extraordiary at motherig, people who are extraordiary at kidess, people who are isightful beyod belief. If we could create istitutios where those people could trasmit their skills ad their practices to others ad, we could have brad ame istitutios where Jae s Spectacular Kidess School could develop that reputatio. Ad you kew whe you hired somebody from that school that: Wow they were just kock-your-socks-off amazig. The gradually, we could create a Silico Valley of Educatio, as it were. We could create a huma developmet field where we could have extraordiary people who would dazzle us. Our childre would be better ad more capable, more delightful huma beigs tha we are. Ad the, we would ot oly be dazzled by techology ad iovatios i the sese of our iphoes ad Google ad so forth, but we would be dazzled by huma capacity. By Fra Morelad Johs T ees are capable of impressive real world accomplishmets, says Michael Strog, fouder of the Academy of Thought ad Idustry, a ew private high school i the eighborhood geared to purpose-drive tees. His aim is to set them free to make great accomplishmets. With a impressive backgroud of his ow i iovative educatio ad etrepreeurship, Strog has two other academies to his credit: oe i Austi, Texas, ad the other i New York City. O August 27, the ew school opeed the doors of its stately buildig at the corer of Jackso ad Scott Streets, which formerly housed the Stere School. It has bee totally reovated with such details as a maker s space i a former garage, several rooms set up with large tables for Socratic discussio, a math room, several kitches (sice purpose-drive studets fix their ow meals ad sacks) ad a laboratory with gleamig ew equipmet that will have to compete for studet attetio with stuig views of Sa Fracisco Bay ad Alta Plaza Park. Crowig it all o the top floor is what Strog describes as our glorious library, ad he does ot exaggerate. The library retais period details, plety of shelf space ad eve more stuig views of the Bay, Alcatraz ad poits everywhere. Studets have small outdoor spaces i which to cotemplate the view, but their primary recreatio area is Alta Plaza, just reopeed across Jackso Street. ATI s iitial studet body cosists of fewer tha 20 tees, mostly juiors ad seiors, but the school is desiged to accommodate up to 60 studets, ad Strog aticipates addig to the erollmet as classes get uderway. There is a core faculty of four, with eight additioal teachers i a variety of curricula. Salaries ad costs, Strog says, are comparable to other elite private schools i Sa Fracisco. Strog, bor to a 18-year-old father ad a 16-year-old mother who dropped out of high school, was accepted ito Harvard Uiversity whe he was 18, without his parets kowledge or support. He left Harvard to go to St. Joh s Uiversity because he was already iterested i Socratic discussio egagig studets I wat studets to take the iitiative to make the world a better place, while livig full ad joyful lives. i questios ad aswers to stimulate critical thikig ad St. Joh s great books course. After fiishig first i his class, pocketig the seior essay prize ad a math prize, he headed to the Uiversity of Chicago for graduate school. Chicago public schools were the still heavily iflueced by philosopher-author-educator Mortimer J. Adler ad Uiversity of Chicago presidet ad later chacellor Robert Mayard Hutchis. Strog believed, alog with Adler ad Hutchis, that public schools eeded to create more opportuities for studets to thik ad reflect. So while workig o his dissertatio, he bega traiig teachers i the Chicago public schools to lead Socratic semiars. Traditioal teachig is so didactic, he says. Whe you itroduce studets to Socratic dialogue, it s like liberatig prisoers. The bureaucracy of public educatio, though, evetually prompted Strog to move to charter schools. I a career that has icluded creatig iovative ad successful middle ad high schools, both public ad private, from Alaska to New Mexico ad Texas, traiig teachers ad promotig Socratic dialogue alog the way, Strog cites successes: statistics o graduates of his MICHAEL STRONG fouder of the Academy of Thought ad Idustry schools ad idividual achievemets such as the Austi studet who fouded a music festival before graduatio. Strog ad his wife, a Seegalese etrepreeur, sped several moths of each year i Seegal. We live i a eighborhood i which I am the oly white perso; the childre costatly wat to touch my strage blod hair, he says. The two are workig to create a compay that provides jobs for adults i Seegal ad iovative educatio for youg people there that is aliged with their culture. I TEDx talks, private discussio ad a blog titled The Purpose of Educatio, Strog pushes for educatio icorporatig Socratic dialogue ad eablig tees to pursue their dreams. Ad as to his ow credetials for educatig others, he says: Most importatly, I have two grow childre who are healthy, happy ad well. As ATI welcomes its first studet body, Strog says the school iteds to provide a persoalized educatio that empowers studets to pursue their dreams, develop amazig projects ad achieve excellece. ART Copy Art A New Kid of Art Foud a Home i the Fillmore By Barbara Wyeth T here was a brief time i the Sa Fracisco art scee whe artwork doe o color Xerox copy machies was hot the latest thig, de rigueur for experimetal ad accomplished artists, ad for ovices as well. The Fillmore was right at the ceter of all the excitemet. The eighborhood had a log traditio of welcomig musicias ad artists. That had begu to chage with redevelopmet, the Geary expressway ad getrificatio, as Fillmore Street became a upscale shoppig district for residets of Pacific Heights. Paiterlad, a loose collectio of artists who gathered i ad aroud 2322 Fillmore i the 1950s, was essetially over whe Jay DeFeo ad her behemoth paitig The Rose moved out of the buildig i 1965. I the mid-70s, however, some remats of that bohemia spirit remaied. The street was still eclectic ad diverse, with small service busiesses, oe-of-akid boutiques, art galleries ad framers, Japaese sushi shops ad bars with live music. It was i this milieu that Barbara Cushma, a ative New Yorker, opeed A Fie Had at 2404 Califoria Street, ow home to Smitte Ice Cream. Iitially, her shop offered fie writig implemets ad supplies for lefties the proprietor beig oe as well as hadcrafted goods ad fie art. Cushma had worked i ceramics ad collage art ad had a avid iterest i all forms of artistic expressio. Copy art was just begiig to show up i alterative art spaces. Work was created by copyig flat art, ofte collage, or by puttig a object o the glass of the copy machie ad producig a image. The shape of the object, the amout of light reachig the surface ad the distace of the cover from the glass all affected the fial image. Cushma, ever o the lookout for the ewest treds i artmakig, had oe of the first exhibits of color copy art i Sa Fracisco at A Fie Had with a show of postcards by Lore Partridge, graddaughter of the great photographer Imoge Cuigham. I 1979, Cushma opeed her Back Room Gallery with the Color Xerox Group Show, which was probably the most comprehesive exhibitio of color Xerox copy art produced at the time. The variety of work was impressive, the cheap beer flowed ad the bright plastic color of the artwork was matched by a overflowig ad equally colorful crowd. Cushma soo closed her shop ad gallery, but she cotiued her relatioships with the copy artists ad wet o to produce her Color Xerox Aual for five years from 1980 to 1984. The format was typically Cushmaesque: a caledar with pages for 13 moths, a guest artist each year, ad a bous of some kid, ofte a postcard by a selected artist, o the back cover. Oe year, the bous was a barf bag from a airlie. I 1984, it was a page from George Orwell s ovel of the same ame. More tha 100 artists were ivited to participate. They were mostly from the Bay Area, but Cushma solicited artists from all over the U.S. ad beyod. Because the caledars were radomly collated i a editio of 385, o two had the same combiatios of artists. Cushma died i 2014, ad dealig with her astoishig collectio of artwork both her ow ad that of others has bee dautig. Her sister cotacted the Xerox Corp. about the caledar project ad the compay gladly accepted oe of the Color Xerox Auals for its archives. From that doatio, curators at the earby SUNY at Brockport developed a exhibit i the fall of 2015 called the Immovable Camera built aroud the Color Xerox Aual ad cocetratig o From her shop A Fie Had at 2404 Califoria, Barbara Cushma lauched the Color Xerox Aual she published for five years i the 80s. Bay Area artists ad work from the 1970s ad 80s. This moth, CEPA Gallery i Buffalo, New York, will preset a expasive exhibitio of copy art, with a major portio of the show devoted to Califoria artists, most of them cotributors to Barbara Cushma s Color Xerox Auals from the 80s. The exhibitio, titled Fast, Cheap & Easy: The Copy Art Revolutio, will be a broader retrospective of the medium ad will iclude more tha 100 artists from the 1960s to the preset, i additio to the caledar art. It cotiues from September 14 through December 15. I 1982, Hal Fischer wrote i a review i Artweek magazie: I the worlds of art ad photography, copy art has the status of a illegitimate offsprig. A recet exhibitio at the Whitey Museum of America Art i New York, collectios ad archives i Frace ad Spai, ad the upcomig show i Buffalo all seem to sigal that this short-lived pheomeo Cushma first champioed at Califoria ad Fillmore might fially be gettig its due. IMAGES courtesy of BARBARA WYETH Back Whe Puk Was Big ad Color Xerox Was All the Rage I met Barbara Cushma at the North Beach Photo Art Fair i the mid-70s whe she still had her shop at 2404 Califoria, just a few steps from Fillmore. I was showig traditioal ad had-tited photographs, FIRST PERSON ad we became art buddies ad dear frieds from the o. I do t recall seeig ay copy art at that fair, but I had heard the buzz about color Xerox. I 1978, my paiter fried Diae Best ad I opeed the Postcard Palace i North Beach, a art postcard store based o a shop called Utitled i New York s Soho district. Best ad I were both artists ad avid postcard collectors, but we wated our store to reflect more of a Sa Fracisco spirit. Ad we wated to support local artists. Puk was big, mail art was big ad color Xerox was all the rage. Barbara Cushma was already o it. After her icoic show i 1979, she gave up retail ad embarked o her equally icoic caledar project. Meawhile, Electro Arts, a studio ad gallery for copy art, joied forces with the Postcard Palace, brigig alog its color Xerox copier. We were workig with artists ad experimetig with all thigs possible o this amazig machie. I was makig images by layig actual objects o the plate of the copier. I was totally itrigued by the brilliat color, texture ad detail captured by the copier. I started copyig my clothig, a favorite pair of shoes ad old ever-wor aklets I foud at a thrift store with their Wome s Work label ad tags still itact. It was my way of preservig objects that amused me, that I liked, that I kew would t last forever. Ad it was fast especially compared to shootig with a camera, developig, pritig ad the paitig with oil paits, which is what I had bee doig. I was hooked. Just framig the prits made o the copier seemed Color Xerox art was featured at the opeig i 1979 of The Back Room, a exhibitio space at Fillmore ad Califoria. At top right, Barbara Cushma (left) ad Barbara Wyeth (right) are iterviewed. too tame for all that plastic color ad jive, so I bega moutig them o foam core, the cuttig out the shapes so they would float o the wall. The I wated to see those mudae thigs bigger, oversized, ludicrous. I bega to elarge them through a series of steps ad a lot of hadwork, puzzlig together pieces util a pair of shoes became two or three times life size. I ve bee asked to sed some of these to the Fast, Cheap & Easy exhibitio of copy art opeig this moth i Buffalo, New York. Computers, digital cameras, scaers ad all the associated techology very quickly chaged image makig forever. The ease ad speed is remiiscet of the color copier, but it seems so much more refied ad tame tha the luscious layers of heat-fused shiy ik that we got o those color Xerox copiers the size of washig machies we wragled back i the 80s. Advetures of Later Life at Legacy Filmfest By Sheila Malkid T wo years ago, I wrote i the brochure for the 6th aual Legacy Film Festival o Agig that I could t wait to be 80. As the director ad fouder of the Legacy filmfest ad with more tha 50 years of workig i the field of agig I was curious: Was I goig to look differet? Would I feel worse? Or better? Ay milestoe birthday from age 30 oward seems to have a depressig, or at least thought-provokig, effect. I remember whe I was youger, maybe 50, I coceived of 70 as the age that would make me old. Yet I did t feel old at 70. So I moved the bar up to 80, which seemed to be a threshold of a icreasigly older age, callig to mid icreasig physical ad metal limitatios. I wodered how joy would fit i. Now I m 80. So far, pretty good. Eyes ad hearig somewhat dimmer, ame retrieval a little slower. My left hip feels a little fuy. These sigs did t happe all at oce; they crept up little by little. Nevertheless, I look forward to ew challeges with a certai humility, perhaps, ad sometimes a look over my shoulder to see what s comig up behid me. For may people, agig, the growig older ad fially growig old is ot a matter of woder, but somethig to fear. Some people still advise me to remove the word agig from the festival ame, arguig it will scare people away. The recet eight-figure sale of a otable Pacific Heights masio demostrates a real estate practice of sellig a home off the market, the reportig the chage of owership the day before the closig. Accordig to Multiple Listig Service data, 2209 Pacific Aveue (left) sold o July 16 for $12.3 millio, its full list price. Located just two blocks from Fillmore Street, the fivebedroom, Beaux Arts-style home was built i 1915 by oted architect Arthur Brow Jr., desiger of such Sa Fracisco ladmarks as City Hall ad Coit Tower. It was the most expesive sigle-family home sold i Sa Fracisco sice the middle of April. But the most remarkable poit about the Pacific Aveue home is how quickly it sold: i just oe day. More ad more ofte, sellers of high-priced homes wat to retai their aoymity or may simply ot wat the icoveiece of stagig the home or holdig a ope house. I such cases, the real estate professioal will market the property privately ad egotiate a deal with a deep-pocketed buyer. Oce the home is set to close escrow, the aget will eter it ito the MLS, thereby skewig the days o market ad the list price-to-sale price ratio. MUSIC By Pamela Feisilber Beig the Sa Fracisco Symphoy s pricipal timpaist is just oe of the thigs keepig Ed Stepha busy these days. He s also head of the percussio departmet at Duquese Uiversity i Pittsburgh; o the faculty at the Sa Fracisco Coservatory of Music ad at Northwester Uiversity i Chicago; ad timpaist of the Grad Teto Music Festival i Jackso Hole, Wyomig, where he s spet much of the summer. The Pacific Heights house he calls home is beig sold, so he s bee lookig for aother place i the eighborhood. Ad the symphoy s ew seaso begis this moth. Stepha is particularly lookig forward to the Stravisky Festival. The orchestra, coducted by Michael Tilso Thomas, will perform the composer s Persephoe ad The Firebird from September 21 to 23; ad his Violi Cocerto, Petrushka ad Le Sacre du Pritemps (The Rite of Sprig) from September 27 to 30. Do you play the other percussio istrumets, i additio to the timpai? Yes, I play all the differet istrumets. But years ago, I discovered a kack for playig the timpai, those large-pitched sigig drums i the back of the orchestra. A lot of people do t realize timpaists ca play complex melodies ad bass lies, because we have pedals that work like the slides o a tromboe. We have to move them very quickly ad precisely to chage pitch. We re always i search of the perfect soud. Is it true you ve collected 600 mallets? May of us are kid of obsessive about KRISTEN LOKEN Timpaist Ed Stepha is lookig forward to the symphoy s Stravisky Festival this moth. A Kack for the Timpai The S.F. Symphoy s Ed Stepha is also a jazz ma fidig the perfect place to strike the istrumet, ad the perfect implemet to strike it with. I kow a lot of mass ad custom mallet makers aroud the world. A very good guy makes a lie of sticks I coceived of to my specificatios: the Ed Stepha Sigature Series. What is it like playig timpai i a full orchestra? Composers like Beethove, Brahms ad Tchaikovsky use the istrumet as part of the overall orchestral soority. Whe Stravisky writes for timpai, he ofte makes it the ceter of attetio ot oly for the listeers, but also for the other musicias i terms of rhythm ad dyamics. It becomes sort of the glue. The timpaist has to be dead o, because everybody relies o the istrumet so much i those momets. Which Stravisky piece excites you most? Ay time we have the opportuity to play The Rite of Sprig, we get excited. It s a icoic work for the timpai, because it s so importat for a successful performace of that piece. I probably play 10 times as much i ay Sibelius symphoy, but the it s wove ito the texture, ad you re ot so exposed. The Rite of Sprig has a lot of solo otes this oe soud made by oe perso. Everythig you play fits i betwee the otes all the other musicias have to play. The souds we choose have a big impact o the soud of the orchestra overall, so it s a tremedous resposibility. If the timpaist is at all imprecise, it has massive implicatios. How is the hut for a ew home i the eighborhood goig? I just siged a lease for a place i the Fiacial District. I m bummed ot to be returig to the Fillmore, but I ll cotiue to occupy the eighborhood eve if I do t live there. For oe thig, I m part of a jazz quartet formed out of the orchestra, Cotrabada, ad we have dates at Scopo Divio, the wie bar at Califoria ad Divisadero. The other members are the symphoy s pricipal trumpet, Mark Iouye; pricipal bass, Scott Pigel; ad a local jazz piaist, Adam Shulma. Why Scopo Divio? I love the vibe there, love the food ad wie, ad I got to kow Tim Hayma, the ower, really well. Whe he heard we were formig a jazz quartet, he wated us to play there ad the first time was a big success. He asked us to play o the first Wedesday of every moth, but with our schedules, we ll get there as ofte as we ca. We ll be back o November 7. The City s Best Aie Williams COMING SOON! COMING SOON!
