Jeffrey Sassmannshausen, MD Biafine is back!!! Well, at least for now. Biafine is a topical cream that is one of the most popular medications recommended at Three Rivers Dermatology. It is an agent that speeds healing. When it was approved by the FDA in 2006, it could be used for healing deep and superficial wounds, ulcers and pressure sores, burns, SUNBURNS, and radiation dermatitis. It is frequently used after laser treatments in plastic surgery and dermatology offices. I have recommended it often following medical treatments such as photodynamic therapy. Biafine contains trolamine and has been used in France for more than 25 years. Its herbal ingredients promote healing by naturally enhancing the removal of the dead skin cells and recruiting macrophages to the wound site. Macrophages are the cells that our body uses to heal and protect open areas of the skin. I feel everyone should have a tube of Biafine sitting in the medicine cabinet. Use it on cuts and abrasions and watch the area heal quicker. Burns feel better. If (God forbid) you get a sunburn, the skin improves rapidly. While supplies last, stop by the Windy Ridge Skin Care Centre at Three Rivers Dermatology and ask about getting your own tube of Biafine.

Most people protect their skin from the elements such as extreme heat, bitter cold and excessive sunlight. However, a lot of people don t think about protecting their skin from harmful ultraviolet rays which come from normal day-to-day sun exposure and tanning beds. An alarming 1.2 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year, and it is estimated that 9,730 people will die in 2017 due to people regularly exposing their skin to powerful and damaging UV rays. Do you know that whenever you frequently expose your skin to ultraviolet rays, it causes many complications other than just skin cancer? Some of the problems repeated UV exposure can cause are wrinkles, age spots, hyperpigmentation and leathery skin. Take these simple steps to protect your skin every day: Made in the shade: During peak sunlight hours, which are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., stay out of the sun. If you can t find a shady area, limit your sun exposure as much as possible or just stay indoors. Take cover: Wearing long-sleeved shirts, long skirts and pants are smart ways to shield your skin from the sun. You can protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that are UV-resistant as well as wearing sun visors. Protect your scalp by using wide-brimmed hats whenever you re outside. Be sure to protect your skin on overcast days as well. Don t feel the burn: Approximately 2.1 percent of men and women will be diagnosed with melanoma during their lifetime - and each sunburn a person gets increases this risk. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every time you re outdoors can help you avoid sunburns as well as prevent cancer and irreversible damage to your skin. A reflection on You: The sun s harmful rays can be reflected (and amplified) by water, sand and even large windows. This can increase your risk of sunburn, even if you are in a shaded area. Practicing preventative outdoor skin care year-round is a smart and healthy thing to do to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Stop by Three Rivers Dermatology & Windy Ridge Skin Care Centre for more information about sun protection.

One of the best holidays in the summertime is the 4 th of July! While we celebrate our nation s birthday, we participate in fun outdoor activities such as grilling, swimming, camping and of course, setting off fireworks! While having fun on the 4 th, people need to be proactive when it comes to safety so everyone will be able to enjoy all the summer festivities while remaining safe and sound. Here are some suggestions to keep this holiday a safe one: Fireworks Precautions There have been many accidents at family gatherings that occur due to people not handling fireworks properly. Avoid potentially serious injuries by following these simple but important steps: Always store fireworks in a cool, dry place. Never allow children to handle fireworks or light them, especially sparklers. Follow the instructions on packaging and discard fireworks after use. Keep a garden hose or multiple gallons of water nearby just in case. Always point fireworks away from you as you light them. Never aim fireworks toward people, pets, vehicles, trees or houses. Light and discharge fireworks in an area away from buildings and flammable materials.

Swimming Safety Whether in a pool, in the ocean or at a lake, remember these simple tips: Only swim where a lifeguard is present. Always swim in a designated swimming area. Stay alert and check weather conditions via weather apps before entering any body of water. Don t drink alcohol or ingest medication before you swim. Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear a life vest. NEVER dive headfirst into shallow water or into water when you are unsure of the depth. Always supervise children while they re in the water. Safety When Grilling Grilling is a favorite American pastime, but it can quickly turn into an unsafe situation with mishaps such as burns to people or pets and fires in yards, homes or parks. Follow these precautions to avoid injuries to family members and damage to your home: NEVER leave a grill unattended when in use. Make sure to always grill in an open outdoor area. Make sure everyone - including pets - keeps a safe distance from the grill. Use long-handled tools especially made for use on grills to keep the chef safe. Be sure to check that the coals are completely cooled down before leaving the grill unattended. Keep your Independence Day celebrations fun and safe by following these tips and enjoy this special holiday with your family and friends! Happy 4 th of July from all of us here at Three Rivers Dermatology & Windy Ridge Skin Care Centre!

Watermelon Lime Juice Yield: 6 servings Summertime means enjoying light and healthy drinks made of nature s sweet goodness. Serve this delicious, cool and refreshing Watermelon Lime Juice at your next barbecue or pool party on a hot summer day! Ingredients: 8 cups (2 1/2 lbs.) of seedless watermelon chunks, chilled 1/4 cup fresh lime juice Directions: STEP 1 Combine both ingredients in a blender. If the blender is too small, blend half of the watermelon first to reduce the volume and then add the lime juice. STEP 2 Blend until thoroughly liquefied. STEP 3 Pour the blended juice through a fine metal strainer to strain out any small solid chunks that may remain. STEP 4 Serve well-chilled, with ice. It will separate as it sits, so you ll probably want to stir it well if you re not serving it immediately. STEP 5 Garnish with sprigs of mint leaves if desired. Enjoy!
