PROTOCOL FOR USING AMERIGEL CARE LOTION The following protocol is recommended for the use of Amerigel Care Lotion on patients who are at elevated risk for developing or who have developed the beginnings of a chronic wound on a lower extremity. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Inspect the skin of the at-risk patient s extremities at least once a day. Pay particular attention to the distal phalanges, especially the bilateral great toe, lateral and medial aspects of the plantar area, and lateral edge of the foot. Cleanse skin daily with lukewarm water and a mild cleansing agent to minimize irritation and dryness of skin. Gently blot skin dry to avoid force and excessive friction. Apply Amerigel Care Lotion liberally to area at risk twice daily. Include all areas of foot and leg determined to be at risk. Apply lotion gently so as not to place patient at risk of additional injury from handling. Treatment staff may also apply lotion to areas of irritations, maceration or skin tears. Treatment staff or patient should find changes in skin within three to five days of commencing treatment. After application, patient may wear socks or hosiery, taking usual care. Maintain or improve the patient s level of mobility and range of motion as appropriate.
