Module 1 Introduction to Aesthetic Medicine: Nonsurgical What is aesthetic medicine? Well really it s about treatments, whether it be nonsurgical or surgical, to reshape normal structures of one s body in order to improve appearance and self-esteem. The aesthetic medical industry has seen a significant surge over the past decade. This growth can be attributed to a number of factors, including: 1) Technology and science advancements in both injectable and laser treatments have created products with better results and less downtime. 2) Major direct to consumer campaigns for products like Botox and Juvederm have increased public awareness. 3) Baby boomers are the fastest growing segment of our population today, and as a group they want to look & feel young.

Top Questions - Neurotoxins (Botox /Dysport ) How long does it last? The average is 3-4 months (We recommend that you schedule a follow up in 3 months). How do I know how much I need? Your provider will help you determine what is necessary based on the consultation. (Every patient is different.) Will it hurt? You might feel a slight pinch from the injection but most patients report that the procedure is relatively painless. Will I bruise? You do run the risk of slight bruising from the injection; we recommend that you discontinue the use of nonprescription blood thinners before and after injection.* Will I still be able to move my face? Yes. Our providers are expert injectors and will place it strategically to smooth out the appearance of wrinkles while allowing you to maintain animation. Is it dangerous? No. In fact, most providers believe that Botox is very safe. There were more than 5.6 million treatments done just last year. Is it reversible? No, but it s not permanent. Your body will metabolize it in 2-4 months. Is there any downtime? No. You can resume normal activities immediately. Where is Botulinum Toxin Type A most commonly used? It is most commonly used in the upper one-third of the face. It is FDA approved to treat wrinkles between the eyes. We also uses it to safely and effectively treat forehead wrinkles, crow s feet and more. *Consult a physician before altering medication Neurotoxin Products: Neurotoxin Cost: Neurotoxin Provider:

You do run the risk of slight bruising at the injection site; we recommend that you discontinue the use of nonprescription blood thinners before and after injection.* There may also be some mild swelling that can last 2-7 days. How much do I need? Everyone is different; the provider will help determine how much product is necessary to achieve your desired results. Is there a possibility of an adverse reaction? There is a low risk of an adverse reaction. Most fillers use Hyaluronic Acid, a substance already found in the human body which greatly reduces the risk of rejection. Will it hurt? Most patients opt for a local anesthetic to avoid the possibility of discomfort. Is it reversible? There is an agent that can dissolve hyaluronic acid facial filler products. Top Questions - Laser Hair Removal How does laser hair removal work? Laser hair removal is among the most effective ways to get smooth skin. A laser destroys the hair root by heating it, leaving a silky surface. Does it hurt? There may be some mild discomfort when the laser is activated. However, it generally fades immediately after. How long does the procedure take? Procedure times depend on the area being treated and can range from for the bikini area to for full legs. Will I need multiple treatments? Yes, because of the hair growth cycle, you will need multiple treatments. The number of treatments and time in between depends on the patient and the area being treated. How long does it last? If the entire series of laser hair removal treatments are completed, results can be permanent. A touch-up treatment may be needed. Is there any downtime? Laser hair removal has no downtime and you can return to your daily routine immediately. Are there any adverse effects? In some patients, the treated area may become red and show some swelling around each follicle. These disappear within 3 days. What areas can be treated? Laser hair removal can target the back, underarms, chin, legs, neck, upper lip, bikini and arms. Is laser hair removal safe? Yes. Laser hair removal is very safe when it is performed by an experienced provider. Laser Device Used: Laser Hair Removal Cost: Laser Hair Removal Provider:

Top Questions - Laser Skin Resurfacing What is Laser Skin Resurfacing? Laser skin resurfacing is a non-ablative or ablative laser that helps rejuvenate minor to severe skin blemishes. It can help reduce the appearance of age/sun spots, wrinkles and other forms of skin damage. Is laser skin resurfacing safe? It is a safe option when performed by an experienced provider and is backed by extensive research. How long does the procedure take? Treatment times depend on the area, location and condition for the skin. It can take as little as 20 minutes or as much as 2 hours. Will I need multiple treatments? This will depend on the specific treatment plan that your provider sets for you. What kind of results can I expect? For most skin resurfacing treatments, patients will see smoother, fresher and younger looking skin with improved tone and texture. Fine lines, wrinkles and brown spots are reduced or erased. Is there any downtime? This is dependent on how aggressive the procedure is. Does it hurt? Patients experience increased sensation of heat, but a topical anesthetic will be applied to minimize discomfort. Can I get skin resurfacing instead of other procedures? Skin resurfacing is a great choice for fine lines, skin imperfections and sun damage, but it doesn t offer the dramatic results of a facelift or the same benefits as Botox or fillers. Is laser skin resurfacing safe? Yes. Laser skin resurfacing is very safe when it is performed by an experienced provider. Top Questions - IPL Skin Rejuvenation What is Intense Pulsed Light Therapy? IPL Therapy uses short but high intensity bursts of light to target various layers of skin. It can be used for surface veins, hair reduction and photorejuvenation. What conditions does IPL treat? IPL is very versatile and treats a wide range of problem areas including rosacea, broken capillaries, freckles, sun damage, wrinkles, scars and acne. Where does IPL treat? IPL can treat the face, chest, neck, hands and arms. How does IPL work? IPL machines use a specific wavelength (or color) of light to reach a specific depth within the skin. The wavelength is adjusted according to what is being treated. How long does the procedure last? IPL sessions can be as short as 15 to 30 minutes. The duration of IPL therapy depends on the condition and area being treated. We will discuss with you the details of the procedure during your consultation. How many treatments are needed? IPL treatments typically involve three to five visits spaced three to six weeks apart. Does it hurt? Patients often describe the pulses as a hot pinprick or the flicking of an elastic band. Any discomfort is temporary and there is no lasting pain. Is there any downtime? There is no recovery time after the procedure, however, immediately after the IPL treatment, there may be slight reddening of the skin. Who should not have Intense Pulsed Light Therapy? People who are prone to keloids or excess scarring, hyper- or hypopigmentation, and are dark-skinned, darkly tanned or do not react well to burns may not be a candidate for IPL. Only a qualified doctor or dermatologist can determine if you are eligible for treatment. IPL Device Used: IPL Cost: IPL Provider:
