Discolourations are frequently related to excess exposure to UV light. UV radiation causes epidermal cells to produce melanin, a skin pigment responsible for protecting the skin against harmful sun effects. When you sunbathe, the pigment is produced in very high amounts. It may be distributed unevenly in the skin, thus making darker patches called discolourations. People prone to discolouration should avoid sunbathing and when exposed to the sun, they should use creams with high protection factor. 6) Should you apply cream under your clothes? Without an SPF cream, individuals with medium complexion get their skin red usually within 15 minutes and SPF is a multiplier of that time, so an SPF of 6 ensures protection for 90 minutes. Because the factor applies only when the product is re-applied to the skin, and because exposure to the sun is not even all the time, plus there are many other factors involved that affect the condition of the skin during sunbathing, we should not consider the factor as a simple calculation of your sunbathing time.
