WHAT IS BANK OF IRELAND JUNK KOUTURE? Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture is an all island competition for secondary school students which takes elements such as fashion, design, engineering and environmental sustainability and transforms them into a creative contest like no other. Inspiring young designers in second level education to use everyday junk materials to create striking works of wearable art, the competition calls on all budding fashionistas to see if they have what it takes to be crowned King or Queen of the upcycled catwalk. Hitting its ninth year running, Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture has already captivated over 24,000 students, 7,000 teachers and 100,000 audience members. Who Can Enter? BANK OF IRELAND JUNK KOUTURE 2019 IS OPEN TO ALL PUPILS WHO ARE ENROLLED IN SECOND LEVEL EDUCATION IN EITHER NORTHERN IRELAND OR THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018/19. 3

COULD YOU BE THE 2019 WINNER? The Launch BANK OF IRELAND JUNK KOUTURE 2019 LAUNCHED IN SEPTEMBER 2018 You ll get lots of sneak peeks and cool information on our social media channels, so be sure to like and follow our accounts to keep yourself one step ahead of the competition! Teacher Registration Student Registration Registration opens for teachers ONLY on the 6th of September (teachers entering for the first time or under a new school must register before their students and upload a copy of their Garda vetting cert/teacher council ID along with a picture of an official ID (passport/driving licence). But don t worry Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture s online entry portal for students doesn t open until the 7th of January 2019, giving you invaluable time to organise your team and fine tune your design before entering your unique creation on app.junkkouture.com. 7 The Brief In short, the whole idea of Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture is to create striking works of recycled couture that wouldn t look out of place on the world s most famous runways. Your design can be crafted into any style of wear, from modern and male, to high fashion and feminine. However, THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE is that it s made from 100% recycled materials which have outlived their intended purpose.

GETTING STARTED Step 1 - Choose Team A maximum of 3 students can participate in each entry. (including the model no exceptions to this rule). Solo entrants are permitted. Pick your teammates wisely as you will be working with them closely over the next 9 months. Choose a Design Mentor (usually an art teacher). Step 2 - Choose Your Material & Design Is It Couture? Your design should fall within the realm of high fashion whilst still using recycled materials. The goal is for your design to look runway ready for fashion week. Can You Use Another Method? Glue as a means of attachment is permitted when entering the competition, however, thoughtful and involved manipulation of materials along with techniques of piecing together your garment such as sewing, weaving or knitting will go much further with the judges. Can It Travel Well? Within the competition the garment will need to travel to regional finals and to Dublin for the grand final without falling apart. You must be able to navigate multiple flights of stairs backstage (3 feet in width) and comfortably perform with an intact design. Should you win, your garment must withstand travel to France. Is It Appropriate For The Competition? Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture is a family friendly event so designs must be culturally appropriate. The use of alcohol, cigarette or drug branding is prohibited unless it is used to create awareness of the harms that these substances can cause. Is Your Material Recycled? Test your materials below: can I use this material? IS IT FROM A CHARITY SHOP? YES NO YES DID YOU BUY IT? YES NO NO YES NO yes, YOU CAN no, IT S NOT A USE IT! RECYCLED MATERIAL PLEASE NOTE: Designs that do not meet the rules and regulations of the competition will not be considered for further stages of the contest. NO IS IT NO LONGER SUITED FOR ITS INTENDED USE? IS IT AN ADDITIVE? (GLUE, GLITTER, PAINT) IS IT A SINGLE USE ITEM? YES

Design: Dragon Sceal School: Scoil Mhuire Community School Teacher: Sinead Cullen Students: Jamie Yap, Alix Weld, Shauna O Rourke Step 3 - Submitting Your Design 9 Teachers must register before students can begin their registration process. They can do this from the 6th of September 2018. Registration for teams opens on the 7th of January 2019. Registration closes on the 21st January 2019. Your Application Must Include: The names of the relevant teacher, the design team and the model (maximum of three students per team). A minimum of two photographs per design. These photos should clearly show the outfit s full length from both the front and back (see Photography Tips on the next page for more information). A brief description of your design to contain the idea behind your creation, the materials used, how it was made and how it promotes sustainability. This description will be used as an introduction to your design if it reaches the live shows, so proof read it and make sure it s as interesting as possible! A piece of music that relates to your entry (maximum 60 seconds) to be used on the catwalk if your design is chosen to be modelled in the live shows. (See music tips on the next page). A description stating the source of your design s recycled materials e.g. waste paper from the art room. PLEASE NOTE: Incomplete applications will NOT be considered by the judges.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS Submitted photographs will represent your completed design. They will be used by the judges to fully inspect your creation and will also be used to showcase your outfit if you are successful during the online voting stage. To make sure your design stands out and adheres to the Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture rules, make sure you: Photograph the design on a person (preferred) or a mannequin (full length front and back views). Ensure that one of the photographs has an up-close view of the materials used and showcases the detailed craftsmanship on the piece. Take the photographs using good lighting conditions to prevent blurring or shadows. Submit a maximum of ten photographs per entry ensuring there is a variety of shots demonstrating the most important aspects of your design. IMPORTANT NOTICE: The first photograph uploaded will be used to represent your design for the online vote if you are chosen to proceed to the regional finals so make sure it is the best one! 0 MUSIC TIPS Is Your Song Very Popular? If so, you may want to reconsider as you will more than likely end up with the same music as another contestant. Can You Choreograph A Routine To Your Chosen Music? You must be able to choreograph a 60 second routine in which you will perform at the regional/grand finals if you progress to the next stages of the competition. Will Your Song Get The Crowd Going? Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture is a live event and audience participation makes a better show, so choosing a song or clip of music that will get the crowd on their feet will make a better performance. @BOIJUNKKOUTURE Does Your Song Reflect The Theme Of Your Design? The judges like to see students choosing music and choreographing a performance based on the theme and inspiration behind the design. PLEASE KEEP AN EYE ON OUR SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS FOR MORE INFO AND TUTORIAL VIDEOS ON HOW TO COMPLETE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS.

JUDGING PROCESS Criteria for Judging Designs must be made from 100% recycled materials - you must state in your application where you sourced your materials. Designs should wow the judges with creative innovation, originality and attention to detail. Designs should be made from a unique use of recycled materials. New or purchased materials are prohibited! Designs should showcase the quality of the applicant s craftsmanship judges will consider how well the design is constructed and the standard of assembly. Designs should be composed of an entire outfit, including accessories and head pieces. Appropriate shoes can also be adapted to blend in with the creation. A good performance will finish off the winning design. IMPORTANT: Appropriate undergarments must be worn at all times. Points will be deducted if this rule is not adhered to. Regional Judging Process Once your entry has been successfully uploaded on time, the following will take place: A panel of judges from Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture will inspect the online entries and select 79 designs each from the Northern, Western, Eastern, Southern and Dublin regions to progress to the regional finals. Following preliminary online judging, successful regional finalists will be announced on the 7th of February 2019 at 7pm via the BOIStudents Facebook page, and put through to their corresponding final in four locations across the country. A confirmation email will also be sent out to all Regional Finalists with further information on the same day as the announcement. The Lifeline Vote 11th 15th February 2019 If you are not one of the 79 finalists from your region do not worry, you may still have a chance of getting through to the next stages of the competition. The remaining unsuccessful entrants will go into a public vote which takes place on our website. The top five designs with the most votes (one from each region) will also make it through to the regional finals. The Regional Final Vote 18th 22nd February 2019 All original regional finalists plus the five lifeline winners will then go into a public vote online which will be worth 10% of their overall marks received at the regional finals. Grand Final Judging Process Approximately 15 designs plus one wildcard from the 5 regions will progress to the grand final. The 80 (approx.) designs will then partake in another online vote similar to that of the regional and lifeline votes which will again be worth 10% of overall marks received at the grand final. Grand Final Vote 1st 5th April 2019 PLEASE NOTE: More information on how and where to vote will be available closer to the time via our social media channels. 11

FAQS Below is a list of the most Frequently Asked Questions: We are entering the competition for the first time in 2019. Do we need to do anything before the registration opens in January? All you have to do between now and registration is plan and make your design remember to include accessories! If you are a brand new school who hasn t entered the competition before, you are very lucky as for first time entrants we facilitate special workshops where a Junk Kouture representative will come to your school and go through everything you need to know about the competition. Do we have to enter the competition through our school or can we just register on our own with our friends? You must enter the competition and register through your school. You also must include your teacher due to our child protection policy. All team members involved in the design must also be from the same secondary school. Why is the closing date at the end of January? This is to ensure enough time for judging, to contact successful applicants and to leave enough time for schools to organise transportation and performances for the regional shows. Why are the regional shows in these particular venues? The shows are held in these venues for travel convenience and seating capacity. Why is there online voting? To acknowledge the hard work and creativity of the students and their creation, but most importantly to create awareness and highlight the importance of reusing and recycling through social media. Is voting not unfair on smaller schools? Designs from smaller towns have statistically achieved the most votes over the last few years, this may be down to better community spirit. Can we see how many votes we have got? This year your votes will be tallied up instantly and displayed. Do judges inspect the designs up close? Yes, before each regional show begins each judge will personally inspect each design to see special details, materials used and talk to the designers. Why do the models have to put on a performance? We are putting on a show and therefore performance is essential. Can we use a secondhand dress as our base layer? / Can we use glitter and paint? / Are we allowed to cut up and reuse old clothes and shoes for our Junk Kouture entry or does it all have to be recyclables like cartons and paper? Of course, you can use any old clothing and shoes in your design, as long as they re no longer in use. You can also use new materials such as glue, staples, paint or glitter, to put your design together and manipulate the main recycled materials in your design. Can we have 3 team members involved and a separate model? Unfortunately, due to limited space backstage at the shows, the model must be included in the 3 members. Can we use smoke machines and specified lighting for our performance? No, we have a professional company who look after all lighting and effects and alter it for each design on stage. No special requests will be given. 23
