STUDY AT DERMATECH TRAINING INSTITUTE PART TIME HAIRDRESSING STUDIES At Dermatech we focus on giving you all the theory you need, combined with adequate practical time in a well-equipped training salon. You ll enjoy salon days where you practice what you ve learned. First, you ll work with mannequins (dolls) and later with real clients. You ll cut, style, colour, relax, perm all under the guidance of experienced facilitators and industry experts. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES After completing the qualifications, a learner could follow any of the following careers: Hair Stylist Hairdressing Salon Management Hair Salon Practitioner Hairdresser Consultant and Advisor Image Advisor HOW TO BECOME A HAIRDRESSER The part time road to becoming a fully qualified hairdresser will take 3 years, although you will be able to start earning an income from the beginning. As a learner you will come to the college one day per week plus a practical day every alternate week. The rest of the week you will be working in a salon, outside of college. There are many advantages to the part time course. The cost of the course will be distributed over a longer period. You may work and stay in your home town and travel to Cape Town, once per week, saving on accommodation cost. You can start earning money which can contribute to your study fees. The part time course is ideal for the person who has been working in a salon and has wanted to become a qualified hairdresser. Doing the course part time has the benefit of the learner gaining a huge amount of industry experience. 1. Start as a learner by enrolling at Dermatech. (July Enrolment Available) 2. Become an apprentice at a salon and start earning a salary. 3. Qualify by taking a trade test. 4. Attend training on Mondays and include Tuesdays every second week for supervised salon days at Dermatech.
THE TRADE TEST To qualify as a professional hairdresser, you must complete a trade test. This happens at various times during the year. It is conducted by the Services SETA at any approved trade test centres countrywide. Trade test assessors are assigned to evaluate the incumbent qualifying hairdresser who will perform various hair treatments in order to qualify. You will need a certain number of logged hours/years of experience and training in order to be accepted to take this test. The Dermatech Hair Design programme prepares learners for this, and provides real-life experiences on campus so that learners can be confident when that day arrives. LIFE AT THE DERMATECH CAMPUS As soon as you start working with hair in our training salon, you re going to feel like your goal of becoming a hairdresser is coming true! At Dermatech you will meet people on a variety of journeys to successful careers. Here are some tips to make life while training even more rewarding: Make sure you take part in hair styling competitions when they occur. Make friends with people who will one day be professionals, and need your services as a hairdresser. Invite friends and family to enjoy the special hair treatments that you ll learn. Take part in the annual formal or work back stage at the annual beauty pageant. ENROLMENT & DEPOSIT The period of study is 3 years. You will register for a year at a time. (I.e. First year - NQF2, Second year - NQF3, Third year - NQF4) Starting date for July 2018 intake: tbc Registration day: tbc A deposit of R3000 upon acceptance and every year thereafter is a non-refundable payment that secures your place on the programme as well as the price. The next payment of R7000 for kit, books and uniform is due on registration day in the first year. This amount will be deducted from your total study fees.

Spend one day a week at Dermatech, studying the theory and practical skills of hairdressing and the rest of the week in a local Hair Salon, under the supervision of a qualified hairdresser. Every alternate week, a supervised salon will be attended at Dermatech. Logging the required hours to become a skilled hairdresser. With sufficient training, and enough hours from the apprenticeship, you may apply to the Services SETA to take a trade test. Once qualified, hairdressers can earn a higher salary.

EXAMS AND ASSESSMENTS At the end of each level you will take a theory exam and an integrated practical assessment. Throughout the semester, you ll get lots of practice and feedback to prepare you for success. There will also be smaller tests and assignments which will help you prepare. Dermatech will go the extra mile to ensure that you know your strong points and development areas. RESULTS AND CERTIFICATION Once learners have successfully completed their trade test, they will receive a certificate from the Services SETA. This is the industry standard accepted certificate. THIS TRADE TEST IS INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED. MODE OF INSTRUCTION Dermatech applies a balance of theory and practice in its classrooms and studios. The language of instruction is English. ACCESS & ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Dermatech does not discriminate against race or disability. Learners wishing to enrol should be physically and mentally able to participate on the programme. Although the academy recommends that all learners complete grade 12, the minimum entry requirement is Grade 9 for the National Certificate in Hairdressing programme. An apprenticeship contract with a Hairdressing Salon (there must be a qualified hairdresser on the premises) is a requirement.
