What s On Schools 2012/13 Workshops Curriculum-linked Workshops for KS1 and KS2 All our workshops are available all year. Workshops can be booked for Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. We recommend you book well in advance to ensure you get your ideal visit date. Teachers this brochure is for you if you want to find out more about an exciting hands-on museum experience for your Key Stage Two and Key Stage One pupils. The award winning Investigate schools programme at The Collection museum presents lively, hands-on, cross-curricular workshops based around our unique collection of artefacts. We want you to have a hassle-free, stimulating visit that can be used as a learning tool back in the classroom, and your pupils to have so much fun they didn t even notice they were learning. We like the children to feel like time detectives discovering about the past for themselves. Talk to us if you have specific ideas in mind as the programme is designed to be flexible to suit your needs. Look out for new workshops during the year. Romans The Romans were the first people to create a city where Lincoln now stands. The Roman artefact collections are extensive and include a mosaic found on the site of the museum. Roman Medley all-day workshop Ideal for two classes. This workshop includes a tour of the Roman artefacts, a selection of collection-based crafts, marching and drills, and a visit to the Big Dig. *lease see the suggested timetable below. *Activities may be altered to suit your needs for example, the Roman Army object handling and marching session can last one hour without shield making. Romans at Home (am or pm) Find out about everyday life in Roman Britain and Roman Lincoln through handling and looking at real and replica objects. Activities include a tour of the Roman artefacts, making a clay lamp or face pot, and a visit to the Big Dig where children can discover Roman objects for themselves. Roman Lincoln (am or pm) Discover how the Romans shaped the city of Lindum Colonia during the Roman occupation. Learn what remains can still be seen around the city today. Activities include a gallery tour, shopping at the Roman market, and a craft activity based on Roman jewellery. Roman Army (am or pm) You are soldiers of Legion IX. Gaius Valerius is your Standard Bearer. Will you make a good soldier? Handle replica weapons and armour, learn Roman marching and formations, make a collage shield to take back to school. Roman Invasion (am or pm) Compare life before and after the Roman Invasion. Find out what changes the Romans brought. This workshop includes a gallery tour with staff, the Big Dig and a craft activity based on Ancient British crafts or Roman military equipment. Coming soon Roman Foods and Feasting Day Vikings Lincoln was a major trading area in Viking times. Many of the objects you will see were found by archaeologists just outside the museum in Flaxengate. Anglo-Saxon Settlers (am or pm) Find out about the Anglo-Saxons through real and replica objects, crafts and clothing. Take a Staff-led tour of the Anglo-Saxon area of the gallery, discover objects in the Big Dig room and learn what evidence grave goods reveal. Make Saxon beads to take back to school. Ancient Egypt Local private collectors donated precious artefacts to the museum in the early 20th century. Using the gallery displays, we compare British Bronze Age crafts with those of the Ancient Egyptians. Ancient Egypt Medley all-day workshop Ideal for two classes. Dinosaurs View the amazing 180 million year-old complete fossilised skeleton of a plesiosaur found under a local school! Jurassic Sea - KS1 pupils (am or pm) Learn about the Jurassic era through handling real fossils. This workshop includes a staff-led tour including viewing the plesiosaur fossilised skeleton, a craft activity to take back to school, and a visit to the Big Dig. Ancient Greeks (am or pm) Learn about how the Ancient Greeks have influenced our every day life through language, democracy, architecture, theatre and the Olympic Games. Your School Visit Inspiring Museum and Art Workshops for KS1 and KS2 pupils How to Book To book a workshop, please contact a member of the education team: Tel: 01522 550959 Email: investigate@lincolnshire.gov.uk When we have taken your requirements, we will send you a booking form. Once we receive your returned form, the booking is confirmed. Two hour and one and a half hour workshops maximum of 35 pupils. All-day workshops maximum of 2 classes. Recommended ratios of adults are 1:10 for KS2 and 1:8 for KS1. Costs 3.50 per pupil for a two hour morning workshop. 3.00 per pupil for a one and a half hour afternoon session. 6.00 per pupil for a whole day workshop. Lincolnshire County Council schools please pay by IDT (we will request a cost code for payment after your visit). Non-LCC schools: lease bring a cheque made payable to Lincolnshire County Council for the amount outstanding on the day of your visit. Facilities Gift Shop The museum has a well-stocked gift shop with lots of items under 2.00. School parties are welcome in small groups with accompanied adults. There is a timeline tour of the museum galleries available designed for teachers and Key Stage Two pupils, highlighting key artefacts on www.thecollection.com Loan Boxes Loans Boxes are available for all the subjects we cover for a cost of 5.00 per week. The boxes contain a mixture of real and replica objects for handling and display together with information, photographs and suggested classroom activities supporting Key Stage Two curriculum. The Big Dig was our favourite. However, we also enjoyed the Egyptian drama and the mummy and shabti making. We also thought the medieval poo was extremely funny (ha ha ha).
