In the prep school: The Junior Stage 1 group has put their creative energy towards weird and wonderful drawings of Oaxacan Alebrijes and beautifully detailed African masks using paper collage. We are currently having fun designing abstract patterns for Henna hands. In Junior Stage 2, the Art and Craft group have made elaborate mosaics based on nature themes, they have learnt to weave on a home made loom, they have enjoyed the art of decoupage and are currently experimenting with paper craft. The Junior Stage 2 Art and Soul group, have focused on themselves as developing artists. To this end, they have identified and depicted their spirit animals in collage form as well as drawings. They used their initials to come up with an abstract design; produced the most fascinating Jacks, Queens and Kings while depicting aspects of themselves in a personalized playing card; and have just finished selfportraits with a twist. Both Junior Stage 2 classes joined me on an outing to the National Gallery in the first term where they enjoyed the variety of artworks, and then chose one to write about (see article below) In the Senior Stage: The Drawing, Sculpture and Painting students are all making fantastic progress. I am so proud of what they have achieved in a short time: some projects that the three classes have done so far include realistic self-portraits; highly detailed drawings of bark; wire sculptures of their hands; mini sculptures on a chosen theme based on the Stabiles of Alexander Calder and subtly coloured paintings of feathers. Drawing students are currently involved with a series of detailed interpretations of a chosen object; Sculptors are creating fascinating cups and saucers in clay which we ll be firing in the new kiln, while the painters are making their own canvases which they will paint colourful abstracted images on. They are working with commitment and creativity and I am loving seeing their talent grow and develop. I will be talking to the website team shortly about starting an online gallery of all the

work that has been done so far, so you hopefully will soon be able to appreciate some of the wonderful Art that is happening here at Cedar House. Dee Janisch Trip to the National Gallery; 10 th March 2016 The trip to the South African National Gallery was amazing. All the artworks were really inspiring and really amazing. A lot of the sculptures were very well done, like the computer grim reaper ( E-Mukishi by Maurice Mbikayi) which was really amazing - all the dedication to make such a beautiful piece. The art studio was really wonderful. That was a place were a young artist goes and makes a piece and they will hang it up on the gallery wall. Unfortunately, we couldn t do it. Besides that, it was a wonderful trip. The club took up 5 rowers in total and Wesley competed in 2 races, the boys u19 coxed quad (four rowers and one cox (the person responsible for steering the boat, and coordinating the power and rhythm of the rowers)) and the boys u15 single scull (one rower in a boat). The team returned home with the title of fastest boys u19 Club coxed quad in the country, and, on top of this, Wesley also received a trophy and a Gold medal for what he made look like an easy win in the single scull. He has been training 6 days a week for the past 6 months. He also had a big win at the South African Junior Rowing Championships just short of 2 months ago.

This behaviour cannot continue. If you still wish to take the survey, here is the link for anyone to use: http://goo.gl/forms/wvphzxoaty Here are some key responses of topics with majority of respondents explaining that they plan to START doing the behaviour

Here is the summary of responses for changing eating habits: On Earth Day, the Ascot Campus only viewed Lexi Hide and friends showed leadership to suggest a very powerfully opinionated environmental movie called Cowspiracy. Camera! Action! Since the release of the first motion picture Cinematographe Lumiere, 121 years ago, approximately 270 000 films have been released globally. The Cedar House Film Club reformed in the first term of 2016 with the intention of exposing our students (and some staff members) to the rich and evolving history of cinema by watching some of these 270 000 films. From the silent romantic comedy Charlie Chaplin classic City Lights, filmed in 1930, to the complex modern magical-realism of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Pan s Labyrinth, our purpose is to primarily entertain and challenge people s engagement with the medium of film. We encourage anyone who enjoys films (and most people do), to join us on Tuesday afternoons. There s no discussion or study component; it s really just about enjoying movies! Ian Marais and Debbie Rumboll Dear Parents We are delighted to share with you details about planned Jozi trip. The excursion intends to broaden our students minds, enlarge thinking and expose them to our country s past and present discourses so that they can have mindfully informed futures. Yours Sincerely Khalifah Makgotlho and Frank Rumboll ;GHI698DJGH: Students were recently given the opportunity to do First Aid level 1. I was so impressed by their respect for the instructors and eagerness to learn such an important skill. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did and I have high hopes to continue the learning of first aid. Oscar Megan :CIG:EG:C:JGHEEG:H:CI6IDC On Friday, 8th April, we were privileged to have three dynamic students from Team Academy in Amsterdam, visit the Grade 11 and 12 Business Studies and Accounting students, to explain how they are currently completing a four-year degree at a tertiary institution that encourages and develops entrepreneurs. Their passion and enthusiasm was clear, when they explained how they get an opportunity to actually start and run their own business under a mentorship system with team coaches. One of the criteria, in order to pass the course, includes generating a real profit. Team Academy has a global approach therefore visiting another country is part of the program, these students chose South Africa, to identify new markets and experiences. Tanya Meldrum C:LA:DGD7DI8H:MIG6BJG6A Cedar House will be starting a Lego Robotics extra mural on Monday afternoons for Prep School learners. Lego robotics combines two skill sets: Building and programming. The

building side incorporates structures, gears, levers, pulleys and later even hydraulics. The coding involves programming the robot to read the conditions around it (light, colour, proximity, etc) and respond accordingly. Both skills are then combined in order to get the robot to achieve objectives. It is a great way to hone problem solving skills while working as a team. Space will be very limited as there are currently only two Lego Robotics sets.
