Harry is a ten-year-old boy who has been asked to prepare a school project on clothes. He starts by thinking about the clothes he and his family wear, the clothes he sees other people wearing and those that he sees on television. Becoming interested in the subject, he goes on to collect pictures from the internet and from magazines. He finds illustrations of clothes for special occasions, for jobs and for sport, and clothes from other countries and other periods. Finally, he goes to the library to learn about how clothes are made. Class Activities (After Reading) Here are some activities to do with your class after reading Harry s Clothes Project. 1. Uniforms Prepare some images (on card or computer) of people wearing uniforms (e.g. waiter, fireman, nurse), and a list of the jobs these people do. Get students to match the images with the words, and to discuss in groups why the people need these clothes. 2. Dressing up Bring dressing-up clothes, (or ask students to bring them). Let students dress up. Each student must tell the class what s/he is wearing and how s/he feels dressed this way. For homework, they should write a short description: I wore and I felt using the past tense. 3. Writing about fashion Get students to work in pairs, and compare fashions one (or two) years ago with this year. Give a model: Last year, people wore but this year they prefer / are wearing. Each pair should produce five sentences. Students read out their sentences, and the rest of the class must say whether they agree with the comparisons made. 3 www.pearsonenglishkidsreaders.com
