February Friends of Monaghan County Museum Lecture Series The theme of this year s programme organised by the Friends of Monaghan County Museum is Estates of Monaghan. Members of the Friends will be on hand to speak about the organisation and welcome any new members who wish to join! Saturday 25th - Monaghan County Museum s multi award winning exhibition From a Whisper to a roar Exploring the Untold Story of Monaghan 1916 officially closes. MarCH Women and the Death Penalty The Lucas estate of Castleshane by Liam O Connor - Thursday 9th at 8pm The Hope estate of Castleblayney by Michael Burns - Thursday 16th at 8pm The Letter Thursday 23rd at 8pm A Play by Monaghan Arts Network based on a letter written by Magheracloone woman Katie McGrane, who was working in the GPO the day the volunteers burst in and began the 1916 Rising. In it she describes what she saw and heard during that fateful week. The original letter has been on display in the museum as part of the award winning exhibition From a Whisper to a Roar. by Dr Lynsey Black Wednesday 8th at 2pm Market House To celebrate International Women s day and in conjunction with our upcoming exhibition The Watchmen - Policing, Crime and Punishment in Monaghan. Dr Lynsey Black will talk about the women condemned to face the ultimate penalty in Ireland, the crimes for which they were condemned and the process by which twenty-one of twenty-two women were reprieved from the death sentence. She will also focus on two women from County Monaghan who were sentenced to death. exhibition launch The Watchmen Policing, Crime and Punishment in Monaghan Thursday 30th at 7.30pm This gripping new display by the museum investigates the history of policing in the county as well as exposing the shocking stories behind some of the most infamous criminal cases in Monaghan s history. This exhibition is based on a display by the National Museum of Ireland Country Life entitled Preserving the Peace Policing on the Island of Ireland 1814-2014

april May bealtaine Festival 2017 celebrating creativity as we age Glass Painting Workshop easter arts & Crafts Tuesday 11th 10am 12pm & 1.30pm 3.30pm These fun workshops will give everyone the chance to make their own Easter artwork. Thursday 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th at 11am 1pm Over four weeks participants will learn the basics of glass painting. Topics covered will include the history of glass painting, common techniques and materials used. This knowledge will then be used to design and create their own painted glass piece to take home. easter Treasure Hunt Thursday 13th 11.30am 3pm Bring the family along the family to enjoy this fun treasure hunt. How Prisons support Policing in ireland by Former Governor of Mountjoy Prison, John Lonergan Thursday 20th at 8pm Former Governor of Mountjoy Prison and published author, John Lonergan will explore the history of the prison service in Ireland through his own unique 42 years experience in the Irish prison system. The people must be saved': The rise and fall of Garda Commissioner Eoin O'Duffy by Prof Fearghal McGarry Thursday 4th at 8pm This illustrated talk will explore the controversial career of the Irish Free State's first Garda Commissioner, Eoin O Duffy, one of Monaghan s most famous historical figures.

Hanged for Murder by Tim Carey Thursday 18th at 8pm Stories from Mountjoy Prison s unmarked graves 1923-1954, by Tim Carey, best-selling author and historian. Lantern Making Saturday 10th 2pm 4pm Design and make your own lantern using a variety of materials and decorations. Sock bunny Making Saturday 17th 12.30pm 2pm & 2.30pm 4pm Create your very own sock bunny to take home. Participants will make their own stuffed bunny using socks, ribbons, googly eyes and other bits and bobs. Paper Quilling Saturday 24th 12.30pm 2pm & 2.30pm 4pm Learn the art of paper quilling. Customize and decorate your own frame which could be used to frame a photo, a drawing or whatever you like. National Drawing Day Saturday 20th 12.30pm 2pm & 2.45pm 4.15pm Participants will have the opportunity to release their innovative and unusual art activities on the day... JuNe Monaghan County Museum will once again be involved in the annual Monaghan Social Inclusion Week programme of events. The Irish Revolution 1912 1923, Monaghan Thursday 29th at 8pm This new book by renowned Monaghan author Prof Terence Dooley of Maynooth University, is the first to examine the impact of the revolutionary period 191223 on politics and society in County Monaghan from both Catholic nationalist and Protestant unionist perspective. JuLy (5-12 year olds) (5-12 year olds) Comic Strip Creation Saturday 3rd June 12.30pm 2pm & 2.30pm 4pm One for all the comic book and cartoon lovers. Participants will create their very own comic strip complete with monsters and heroes. Weaving Workshop Saturday 1st 1pm 3.30pm Have a go at weaving in an easy and portable form experiment with colours, shapes and textures. Learn the basic techniques of this traditional and heritage craft and add your own artistic style and flair to create a little tapestry that you can take home.

The Museum Goes Country Saturday 15th (Times TbC) The museum celebrates its third year working in collaboration with one of the most popular country music festival in the country. Once again the gallery will be transformed into a live music venue for up and coming female country music stars. building the Past Archaeology Summer Camp Monday 17th Wednesday 19th & Monday 24th Wednesday 26th This summer camp is suitable for children from 6 12 year olds. All budding archaeologists will have the opportunity to get their hands dirty while having fun learning about the archaeology of County Monaghan. The Museum at Tydavnet Show Saturday 19th As part of our developing programme of outreach throughout the community, the museum will be taking part in this years Tydavnet Show. Staff will be on hand to talk about some of the incredible stories told through the artefacts on display in the museum. SePTeMber The Museum Gets the blues Saturday 2nd (Times TbC) Once again the museum gallery will be transformed into a Blues club where some of the worlds most renowned blues musicians will play and talk about the history of the Blues. august Heritage Week Saturday 19th Friday 25th The museum s displays will be open to the public throughout the week with tours of our new exhibition The Watchmen Policing, Crime and Punishment in Monaghan. Culture Night Friday 22nd at 7.30pm To mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Japan the museum presents demonstrations of the Japanese Martial Art Kendo, traditional Japanese dress and the world famous Japanese Drumming.

The Last All Ireland Assembly The 1917 Convention by local historian George Knight Thursday 28th at 8pm Exploring the 100th anniversary of this all but forgotten and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to answer the Irish Question in the aftermath of the 1916 Rising, and the Monaghan men involved. Monaghan Positive Mental Health Week Monday 9th Friday 13th The museum will be involved once again in this important week, where we ask the community to look after their mental health Cultivating compassion within our lives - How practising compassion leads to greater inner-contentment and peace OCTOber Thursday 12th at 8pm by Psychologist Shane Martin Research suggests that connecting with others in a meaningful way helps us enjoy better mental and physical health and speeds up recovery from disease. Indeed, new scientific studies have shown that it may even lengthen our life spans. What is compassion? What are its benefits if we integrate it into our lives? How can we apply more compassion to ourselves, others and our world? Murders at Wildgoose Lodge The Museum at Taste of Monaghan Friday 6th Sunday 8th The festival of food and culture has grown from strength to strength and the museum is very excited to take part this year for the very first time. by Prof Terence Dooley Thursday 26th at 8pm On the night of 29-30 October 1816 eight people were murdered by burning to death in a house just over the Monaghan border in Co. Louth known locally as Wildgoose Lodge. Those killed included a fivemonth-old child. Prof Dooley tells the story of this infamous crime.

This year the museum will host a number of events around the theme of science in history. Details will be confirmed closer to the time. Patrick Kavanagh s 50th anniversary Thursday 30th Puppet Making Workshop Wednesday 1st & Thursday 2nd 9.30am - 12.30pm & 1.30pm - 4.30pm Design and create your very own puppet using a variety of materials.
