DEFINE YOUR STYLE INTENTIONS The exercise that I like to share with my clients for this part of the process is The Style Intentions. I adapted it from Danielle LaPorte s book Style Statement. You re going to want to do this for each of your houses if you consider yourself a chameleon and want to adapt a different vibe based on where you are. So for example in Miami you may want to feel flirty, free, and fun vs in New York you may want to feel sophisticated, cosmopolitan and playful, and in the Hamptons graceful, serene, and down to earth. In case you aren t able to come up with style intention words of your own I ve provided some words to get you going and inspired: In this exercise. Circle 8-10 words that resonate with you then take some time and choose 3 from that list. That will be your Style Intentions. CORE STYLE FOUNDATION This exercise is about working from the inside out defining your core style feelings. This foundation will help you make the right choices when shopping. It will lead you to purchase more comfortable fabrics and style if so desired. Or sexier clothing if that is wanted. How do you want to feel in your clothing? How do you NOT want to feel in your clothing? Describe your ideal style. What image do you want to project to the world? What colors make your skin glow? What does your lifestyle require you to wear for work? For play? What age do you look?
DEFINE YOUR STYLE AUDIENCE & NEEDS Figuring out who you are getting dressed for every day is important. This exercise is meant to guide you further in finding out what you need to shop for. Are you dressing for yourself? To feel good? To feel sexy, or to feel comfortable? Are you dressing to impress people at work or your clients? Are you dressing for your husband to please him? What do you immediately need? Are you missing a top to a specific skirt or pant? What kind of event stressed you out because you had nothing to wear? What kinds of outfits do you need stocked here? How often are you at this house? How many outfits do you need realistically? If you only spend weekends here and have washing help, you don't need a large quantity of outfits. Are you dressing for the overall style or theme at this house? If you can't think of some styles, I've provided some ideas for you here: beachy casual, or urban chic, eco casual, country casual, woodsy comfortable, relaxed, dressy brights and prints, beach chic. What colors would work best to wear? What's missing clothing wise? Any special activity wear? What accessories do you need stocked here? Purses, jewelry, shrugs, scarves, coats, gloves? Do this exercise for every house or trip you have planned in the next year. It will help you forecast your needs and get you prepared so that you can get dressed for any occasion that may pop up.
DEFINE YOUR LIFESTYLE Lifestyle is very important to factor into your style prescription because we take stock on where your life is right now. Once you define this, then it gets factored into what needs to get edited out of your life and what is missing and needs to be shopped for. For example, if your life is super casual you won t be shopping for black tie gowns. However, it s always best to have go to options of dressier items just in case something pops up. What are your daily needs style wise? What do you need to dress for? How often are you at each home? How much travel are you doing? Is your life casual or dressy most of the time? What percentage of your life are you in an urban setting? Or a country setting? What are your work/life style obligations? How often do you need to wear black tie outfits? Are you willing to repeat black tie outfits or would you like to explore clothing rental?
DEFINE YOUR STYLE BUDGET Knowing how much money you have to spend on new clothing every month, quarter, and year is a wonderful exercise to define where you should shop for new items. It s also good information to define where your cost per item threshold hits. You should also share this information with your personal stylist so that you are on the same page. You can easily spend $10,000 or $10 on an item of clothing, depending on where you shop. What items in your closet have been the best investments? Meaning you have gotten a lot of wear out of them? Monthly Budget: Quarterly Budget: Yearly Budget: The most I will spend: Item of clothing like a dress: Wardrobe staple item like a coat: Pants or jeans: Piece of jewelry: Bag: Scarf: Most important item to you:
