TOOWOOMBA ART SOCIETY INC CURRENT EXHIBITION The Alchemy of the Imagination An exhibition of original Artist s Prints by the Saturday Printmakers 29th September 26th October 2014 REMINDER TO EXHIBITORS The advertised opening hours for Culliford House exhibitions include weekends 10am to 2pm on Saturdays & Sundays. Please ensure that you have someone rostered to sit your exhibition on these days. The leader of your group or the Gallery Coordinator will provide you with a key. President s Report Unfortunately I completely missed the Annual Members Exhibition, but I m delighted it was a success. And I must compliment the printmaking group for their splendid current exhibition. After the ordeal of a 15 hour 20 minute Sydney Dallas flight, the extreme paranoia of US Homeland Security, and what may well be the world s worst airline, American Airlines, Amahl and I reached Mexico City where we joined a fascinating and comprehensive tour, focusing not only on the remains of the prehispanic cultures but also on the colonial era in Central America as we travelled south and east across Mexico from the Aztec pyramids at Teotihuacan to the great Mayan complex at Chichen Itza, visiting numerous museums, art galleries, churches, Spanish towns and artisan communities, many in dramatic landscapes. The second part was a clockwise tour of Peru from Lima on the Pacific coast to the Amazon jungle, to Cuzco in the high Andes, then via Titicaca, the world s highest navigable lake and Colya Canyon on highways up to 5000m (over 16,000 ft) ASL, before descending to the desert, the famous Nazca lines and the Ballestas Islands. Two of the three weeks were spent at high altitudes, and the unquestioned highlight was visiting the sacred site/ Incan royal palace of Machu Picchu. The recommended approach is a 4 day, 47 km walk over Andean passes at heights of up to 4215m on the Inca Trail, the steepest sections paved with uneven granite steps of between 15 and 45cm drop, so it was quite a challenge, particularly a 3000 step descent on the third day. I was far from being the only senior in my group were an over 70 Yorkshire couple, he lame with both knees needing reconstruction, and in another group a blind Indian man and his sighted wife. The walk seems to attract the mad and the dogged! But the real heroes are the porters who carry 25kg loads of food and camping equipment, while everyone else has small backpacks, and our guide was making his 581 st walk along the Trail. I was relieved that Amahl had opted to visit by train as she found climbing exhausting at that altitude. Despite predispositions towards human sacrifice to placate the gods, these indigenous civilisations in the Americas were highly organised, technologically and scientifically advanced, and somewhat less violent than the Conquistadores who came for their gold in the 16 th century. TAS HISTORY I am compiling the history of TAS and wonder if anyone knows about or holds old catalogues of TAS annual Members Exhibitions. There are wide gaps in our knowledge of these exhibitions which have been held since the 1930s, so any old catalogues would be wonderful to scan and study. Eventually the old archive material will be accessible on the TAS website. Originals will be returned to the owner, unless donated to our archives. Any other TAS-related documents letters, minutes, advertisements for TAS events etc. are also sought, so please turn out those old boxes.
