General Information for the Watch Buyer The DUEBER-HAMPDEN CO. does not repair watches for the general public and discourages the idea of sending them direct to the factory. There are practical workmen in nearly every city, town or hamlet in the United States, who, having spent many years to learn their trade, should reap the benefit of their labor and be given the opportunity of doing this work. However, should any of them be unable to obtain the proper results, we are always ready and willing to co-operate and repair the watches at only the actual cost of material and labor..:. A watch when worn for the first time frequently runs irregularly for a few days. Do not think it is a poor timekeeper or is already out of order. It is a fact, time proven, that a watch must become adapted to its wearer, their manner in carrying it, their gait in walking or the kind of work they are engaged in. In case it varies slightly at 6rst take it to your jeweler and he will adjust the regulator and in a short time your. watch will be ready for its ceaseless grind through its life. Do not tamper with the regulator until you are thoroughly acquainted with its functions and operation. 42

The Care of a Watch It is conceded that a watch is one of the most delicate instruments known to modem mechanics, and considering the amount of handling in every day use, it is really marvelous that such a machine can be constructed to register time that will vary but a few seconds in a week, when the variation of one ten-thousandth part of an inch in any of its parts or a sudden change in temperature, which expands or contracts any metallic inshumen! may effect its poise. It is surely a fine tribute tq man's genius when he is capable of constructing the many fine parts and assemble them to make up a watch not much larger than the size of a quafter. Howev.er, they are not beyond damage either ftom accident or improper use, neither, like any other maching will they run forever without any care or attention, especially when you consider that their balance wheel makes eighteen thousand vibrations in an hour. Uke any other machine it requires cleaning and oiling and should be taken to a first-class repairer and overhauled at least once in every two years, but be sure to select an eftcient workman, as a watch can be damaged beyond repair in a very few minutes by any one lacking skill and experience' in this line. This time for repairs ciln be extended a great deal by proper care of a watch, the pocket should be kept lree from dust and it should be wound at regular intervats of twenty-four hours each, preferably in rhe early moming, so that the mainspring has its full strength to withstand the jar of daily wear. Do not carry a watch in a po.eet containing matches or rubber, as these substances will alrnost certainly tarnish the case and it will add greatly to the time-keeping qualities by suspending it, when not being wom, in the same position as it is carried; also remember that it is harmful to allow it to run down. 44
