IUAV - master s ESTETHICA: Sustainability in fashion head of course: Maria Luisa Frisa Course content director: Orsola de castro COurse beginning: March 2018

More than just looks, fashion is the understanding of THE practices and culture BEHIND the production and consumption of clothes, our second skin. The fashion industry is one of the largest engines of growth and development for many economies around the world, and one of the biggest environmental polluters and social offenders; it needs to become a pro-active force for good, leading on transparency, social justice and safe environmental regulations. A new mindset for a sustainable fashion future.

Ethical spending is on the rise: 72% of consumers attach great importance to clothing that is ethical or sustainable (1). 75% of millenials prefer brands that give back to society instead of just making a profit. A sustainable organisation was defined as: minimising waste sustainable sourcing using renewable energy welfare of employees (2) 47% of the consumers reported that they will be loyal to a brand which is engaging in social and environmental issues (3). 44% of the consumers believe sustainability enhances brand value (3). 1. GfK Roper Consumer Styles, 2. Consumer Study January 2015, Elite Daily s survey questioned 1300 Millennials, 3. sustainability report 2015 by Defacto Research & Consulting GmbH

THE NEXT GENERATION is growing up demanding that we look after our planet and is increasingly wanting to do good, in order to feel good. In response to a growing consumer desire to embed social responsibility and environmental sustainability in its shopping habits, the fashion industry is looking for innovative ways to design sustainably, and for storytelling narratives that convey the message. More and more the industry is weaving its principles in the way they design and produce, incorporating ethics, sustainability, innovation and craftsmanship. A new generation of creative, strategic designers, with a strong sustainability education, is now needed to help bridge the industry towards the 21st century.

ESTETHICA : SUSTAINABILITY IN FASHION The Master s Estethica: Sustainability In Fashion aims at imparting a critical knowledge of the fashion industry, a deep understanding of design and production practices and a culture of respect for people and planet earth s resources. Our objectives are to foster sustainable thinking in fashion design, from conception to communication, and create connections between students and the local industry. We aim to develop a space where the present system is challenged to rigorously adopt environmental and ethical practices, encouraging an economy of quality vs quantity.

LEARN FROM THE PRACTITIONERS, PROFESSIONALS AND INNOVATORS The Master s, a bilingual course (Italian and English), is a design-lead, project-based, one year course, in the fields of fashion design and marketing. Within a fashion-forward approach, the Master s will focus on design innovation, efficiency, best practice, new identity models and communication strategies. It will include tutorials, workshops and lectures by industry professionals and sustainability pioneers on themes such as fashion design, manufacturing and marketing, history of the fashion industry, global policies, materials development and innovation.

A BRIGHT FUTURE IN A INNOVATIVE INDUSTRY The Master s will connect students with the local industry, spearheading projects that encourage collaborative thinking, creative approaches, problem solving solutions, innovative techniques, communication and identity. Participating students will consolidate a unique, up-to-date professional education, and have an opportunity to access the industry through curriculum and apprenticeship programs, approaching different industrial realities to further their understanding of the sector.

MASTER S PARTNERS We believe that knowledge transfer and collaboration are an important part of sustainable thinking, therefore our partnerships program will be a key-component of the Master s program giving students access to industry and the industry a way to invest in the future via education. Tailor-made Master s project briefs will be developed in collaboration with the Master s Partners. Students will be able to choose from those briefs for their course projects. The briefs will reflect industry latest innovation development allowing students to gain access to the most advanced research, technologies and materials available.
