luscious volume The MasTer New York City hairstylist Ted Gibson, whose star clients (or Gibson Girls, as he likes to call them) include Ashley Greene, Anne Hathaway, Zoe Saldana, and Debra Messing The Look a skyhigh, bouncy mane ThaT s Touchable, not helmet-y I m from Texas, so I ve always loved big hair, says Gibson. It s powerful, it s sexy, and it makes a statement the moment you walk into a room. Pro TiP Wind, rain, and humidity are the enemies of voluminous hair, says Gibson. His secret: a sprinkling of baby powder directly onto the scalp. It s like an insurance policy, he says. The baby powder adds texture, so your volume lasts. how To GeT it maximum lift is the goal, so Gibson recommends using lightweight shampoos and conditioners in place of heavy formulas, which can weigh hair down. also, be sure to apply conditioner only from the mid-shaft of the hair down to the tips putting it on the top of your head flattens roots. Try Pantene Pro-V Aqua Light Shampoo and Conditioner ($4 each; drugstores). Next, boost fullness by spritzing a volumizing mist, like Phyto Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray ($28; sephora.com), throughout hair, squirting a little extra right at the scalp. Then, after drying with a round brush, break out the Velcro rollers. hot rollers are great for curling the ends of hair, but Velcro ones are better at providing lift at the roots, he says. Spray a 2-inch section of hair with a light-hold hairspray, such as Ted Gibson Beautiful Hold Hairspray (right, $20; beauty.com), then wrap it around a medium or large roller (we like RickyCare Fusion Self-Grip Rollers, right, $6 for 6; rickysnyc.com). roll the hair up toward the scalp, secure it in place, and continue the same process all over your head. add another misting of hairspray once you re done. ( You absolutely can t be afraid of hairspray with this look, says Gibson.) Let the rollers sit for as long as you can at least 10 minutes then unravel them and brush out strands to remove any curls. For a final bit of lift on top, back-comb the area at the crown of your head to create a 1-inch-high cushion and smooth a section of hair over it. The final touch? Yep, you guessed it: hairspray. 128 Shape march 2012 Shape.com SH0312_F_Beauty.indd 128 1/26/12 5:14 PM
sexy sleekness Pro TiP Surprisingly, using a flat iron and going super-sleek is the best defense against rain the iron seals the cuticle, so it s harder for moisture to get in, says Lecompte. For a press event in Mexico, I ironed Katie Holmes hair very straight, and we never had to worry at all about frizz. The MasTer andy lecompte, a Los Angeles stylist who regularly coifs celebs like Katie Holmes, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Richie, and Madonna The Look silky, ultra-straight strands There s something about this style that makes a woman feel especially polished and confident, says Lecompte. how To GeT it Start by applying a smoothing product, like Moroccanoil Treatment ($41; beauty collection.com), throughout damp hair, taking care to avoid the ends. This helps keep strands weightless and allows them to move, says Lecompte. Then, use a boarbristle brush to hold the hair around your face and on the top of your head taut as you blow-dry, to straighten it. That s the hair you really see, so do it when you re still fresh, he says. Save the back and underside for last, when your arms are tired. Work around the head, straightening 1- to 2-inch sections at a time. once you re done, go back over everything with a ceramic round brush. It acts like an iron to smooth hair, and the combination of the two brushes provides long-lasting sheen, he says. Try Solano Thermal Round Brush (right, $17; folica.com). For the last step flat-ironing Lecompte recommends an iron with curved edges, such as FHI Platform Flat Iron ($145; folica.com), to maintain an ever-so-slight bend at the bottom. The biggest mistake women make is overflattening, he says. mist a section of hair with a heatprotectant product, like Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray (right, $14; wella.com), then slowly run the iron down the length of it, rolling it gently at the ends. statement-making BAnGs The MasTer Hairstylist mark Townsend, who splits his time between Los Angeles and New York City, tending to the likes of Lea Michele, Ashley Olsen, Minka Kelly, and Rachel McAdams; he also famously gave Reese Witherspoon those incredible bangs for the Golden Globes a few years back. The Look Face- FraminG FrinGe Bangs take a haircut and make it a style, says Townsend. Plus, they can be personalized to any face. Nervous? Try sideswept bangs. Says Townsend: Ninety-nine percent of women look good with them. how To style TheM prepping your bangs with an arsenal of products is the worst thing you can do, says Townsend. You re going to be touching your bangs all day, so you ll be getting natural oils on them, he explains. Load on too many sprays and creams and they ll start to look greasy. Instead, when bangs are wet, use a comb to hold them straight while blasting them with a blow-dryer, the nozzle pointed down to ensure a sleek effect. choose an ionic dryer, like the Velecta Paramount Paris TGR 4000i ($200; beechergroup.com), Townsend s favorite. With a good ionic dryer, you ll style your bangs in half the time, he says. If you want bangs super-straight, run a flat iron over them, then finish with hairspray. Stick to brushable, aerosol versions, such as Oribe Superfine Hairspray ($29; barneys), and Pro TiP Bangs start to look dirty before the rest of your hair, but a dry shampoo, like Dove Refresh + Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo (below, $4; drugstores), can revive them by soaking up oil and sweat in seconds. Direct the product at the roots, says Townsend, let it absorb for a minute or so, then brush through. hold the can 10 to 12 inches away any closer and too much product will be deposited, which can make hair stiff or oily. For touchups, tote a Swissco Wood Toothbrush (right, $6; swisscollc.com) in your bag. I send my girls down the red carpet with one of these and a small bottle of hairspray, says Townsend. Spritz the toothbrush with hairspray, then run it through to keep bangs neat and controlled. hair: LouIS angelo/garren NeW York For kérastase paris. makeup: keiko TakaGI/See management For chanel. manicure: olya TIToVa/JudY casey For Sephora by opi. The spirals look Nellie Oleson esque at first, but they ll drop a lot, says Josh. (If your hair has no problem holding curl, stick with a large-barreled iron.) how To GeT it Work a volumizing foam, like John Frieda Luxurious Volume Thickening Mousse (right, $7; drugstores), through damp hair, then roughly dry using a blowdryer and your fingers. Spend some time tugging hair at the roots up and out to add lift. (don t worry about using a brush or comb unless you re prone to tangles an imperfect texture adds to the look.) once hair is dry, wrap 1-inch sections haphazardly around a curling iron to create waves. The key is to leave the ends of each section of hair out of the iron, says Josh. This will give you a natural-looking shape not a high school prom one. after you re done, spritz all over with a light-hold hairspray, such as Bumble and Bumble Does It All Spray ($26; bumbleandbumble.com). You want strands to be touchable, not stiff and obvious, he says. Finally, run a brush through hair so the ringlets soften into smooth waves. The MasTer New York City hairstylist and colorist harry Josh, who works with such stars as Rose Byrne and Amanda Seyfried and maintains the envyinducing mane of long-time client Gisele Bündchen The Look casual, not-too-perfect curls This is the ultimate bombshell hair, says Josh. It s bodacious and sexy but still looks effortless. SH0312_F_Beauty.indd 131 1/26/12 5:15 PM
