Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2016 SILKEBORG Limited Edition Collection from IKEA available in January 2017
About the Collection The SILKEBORG range is a new Limited Edition collection of handmade rugs which represent the traditional and authentic weaving technique of the Turkish peninsula of Anatolia in a contemporary way. The collection pieces incorporate natural, historical and cultural features of Anatolia into the design through colours and patterns and are all created from old Turkish rugs. The rugs are more commonly known as kilims and either feature stripes, medallions or roses to represent the different regions of Anatolia. The kilims have also been used to create a range of cushion covers called KEYLA. Both SILKEBORG and KEYLA will be available in IKEA stores across the UK from January 2017 for a limited time only.
The SILKEBORG range is a unique blend of traditional and contemporary designs which suit many different styles. Each SILKEBORG patchwork is one of a kind, has its own character and tells a different story from centuries old history and culture of Turkey. Each patch, each pattern, each texture is another value which enhances the richness and beauty of each rug and which make them unique. Michelle Allen Brown, Textiles Sales Leader for IKEA UK & Ireland
How they re made Old and used Turkish rugs pass through an environmentaly friendly processs to become SILKEBORG patchwork rugs. Rugs are collected from all around Turkey and deeply cleaned and classified according to their condition, size and colour. They are then carefully sheared, neutralized from their original colors and over-dyed to create remarkable color assortments. Over-dyed rugs are undercoated with 100% cotton fabric to obtain firm and sturdy pieces before they are cut into patches and overlocked. Then patches are composed by rug designers and stitched together by rug artisans. Finally patchworks are coated again with 100 % cotton fabric this time to increase product durability and provide flatness.
Upcycling Process Upcycling, the process of taking discarded or unwanted materials and turning them into something new and desired, is being embraced across the globe as an environmentally friendly way of keeping pace with trends. Unlike many other makers of patchwork rugs, ICI works exclusively with old Anatolian handwoven carpets that to create the SILKEBORG collection, staying true to the meaning of vintage. There is no shortage of material in Turkey, where carpets and carpetmaking have been part of the culture for more than a millennium. The genuine artefacts suit the current appetite for traditional craftsmanship, as well as the thirst for natural fibres.
Made by People The SILKEBORG range was created through the Made by People initiative which is about improving the production of hand-made rugs together with suppliers around the world. The purpose is to secure that we keep a unique craftsmanship, improve supply, care for the environment - and at the same time radically improve the way hand-made rugs are produced. In this way we create a better everyday life for the weavers, the suppliers, IKEA and our customers.
Finding environmentally friendly ways to create new products is incredibly important at IKEA. Upcycling is a great way to reuse rugs which are usually thrown away and helps protect traditional designs from around the world. Joanna Yarrow, Head of Sustainability for IKEA UK & Ireland
