Nevertheless, it is possible to design protective clothing which offers a certain degree of protection. Different functional principles may be applied in order to give this protection. 1. Clogging: if the moving chain comes into contact with the first of several protective layers below the outer material, it rips out bundles of fibres which block the sprocket, bringing the chain saw to a standstill. This considerably reduces the risk of injury. 2. Chain slipping: on contact with the protective material, it does not cut it. 3. Chain braking: fibres have a high resistance to cutting and absorb rotational energy, thereby reducing chain speed. 208

For normal forest harvesting work by professional loggers who are thoroughly trained and instructed. Professional protection (including Design A) consists of: Protective helmet (to EN 397) complete with eye protection (to EN 1731 or EN 166) and ear defenders (to EN 352). Jacket with or without protection (blocking material). Chainsaw gloves or mittens with blocking material for the back of the left hand (complying with EN 381-7). Protective trousers or bib and brace with blocking material (complying with EN 381-5). Protective rubber or leather boots with inlay of blocking material (complying with EN ISO 20345). Personal first aid kit including large wound dressing. 2. For persons not normally using a chainsaw or in exceptional circumstances i.e. tree surgeons. The Health & Safety Executive s minimum protective clothing recommendations for chain saw users (including Design C) are: Protective helmet (recommended to comply with EN 12492) complete with eye protection (to EN 1731 or EN 166) and ear defenders (to EN 352).
