3 A LONG & RICH HISTORY The Egyptians developed aromatic oils and essences 5,000 years ago. Great perfume lovers, they used almond and rose oil, frankincense and myrrh, cedar, mimosa and lily, nutmeg, sweet balsam, cassia, benzoin and labdanum, galbanum and opopanax in such diverse preparations as aphrodisiacs, medicines, cosmetics and incense. In fact, the art of perfumery in Ancient Egypt was so sophisticated that when archaeologists opened Tutankhamen s tomb in 1922 they discovered an ointment that was still fragrant! The study of fragrance, developed in the Nile Valley, was to inspire other ancient cultures. In Greece, athletes anointed their bodies with aromatic oils, and at banquets Romans refreshed themselves between courses with flowerscented water. It was the Persians who developed the use of exotic ingredients and the technique of extracting oils from flowers through distillation. This expertise was brought to Western Europe at the time of the Crusades. In 1190, perfume began to be produced commercially in Paris, and from there, it blossomed into a massive industry. Perfume is the key to our memories - Kate Lord Brown The word perfume is derived from the Latin word, per fumus, meaning through smoke. In the temples of Rome, crushed flowers, leaves, wood shavings, spices and aromatic resins were thrown onto burning coals as offerings to the gods. Their fragrant scent was released through smoke (per fumus). 5

4 PERFUME. PART ART. PART SCIENCE. A fragrance is a delicate blend of ingredients both natural and synthetic that are combined to make each perfume unique and one-of-a-kind. The strength of a perfume is based on the elaborate balance of both natural and man-made ingredients. Both ingredients are of equal importance in manufacturing. This is because the natural oils extracted from blossoms, woods, leaves, spices and resins are often enhanced limitlessly by synthetic oils. The idea is that they act as the key to unlocking the true potential of the natural ingredients. But don t be fooled in thinking that natural scents are superior. A leading perfumer, Coco Chanel, was in fact one of the first who encouraged perfumers to give a leading role to synthetics. She once famously said I wanted to give women a perfume that was artificial, that is man-made, I don t want the smell of rose, or lily of the valley. I want a perfume that is a composition. Your perfume is your message, your scented slogan. - Maurice Roucel Synthetics are not necessarily poor man s natural oils. There are synthetic aroma notes that are more expensive than any natural equivalent. In addition, pure natural oils are also more likely to cause a reaction than any chemically created alternative. 7

5 COMPOSITION OF A PERFUME HEAD HEART Perceived immediately upon application. Head notes form our initial impression of a perfume. However, while head notes are strong in scent, they evaporate quickly. Citrus and ginger scents are common head notes. Emerges just prior to top notes dissipating. Middle notes, also referred to as the heart notes, form the main body of the perfume. Scents are often more mellow and rounded. Lavender and rose are typical middle notes. There are three different phases through which a fragrance develops when you spray it on your skin. Each of these stages are called notes. The head or top notes provide the first impression of a fragrance. These are the light volatile notes that burst on your skin as you first spray, or the fragrance you experience as you open a bottle. Often described as fresh, assertive or sharp, head notes evaporate so quickly that they usually wear away within a few minutes. As head notes fade, the heart or middle notes bloom on your skin. These form the core of the composition, and are the dominant theme of the fragrance. They can appear anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour after the application of a perfume. BASE Appears close to the departure of the middle notes. Base notes bring depth and solidity to a perfume. Scents are typically rich and deep and will last the longest, especially musk notes. Base notes are the foundation of the fragrance, the notes that bind the other ingredients together. They create the memory that makes the theme linger in your mind, and make the fragrance last. Some base notes can still be detectable 24 hours after application. 9

6 FRAGRANCE TYPES Fragrance is a unisex, generic term used for perfume. Fragrances come in many forms and are called different names but generally fall into these categories: EAU FRAICHE COLOGNE EAU DE TOILETTE PERFUME PARFUM The most diluted version of fragrance, usually with 1% 3% perfume oil in alcohol and water. Usually lasts for less than an hour. Oldest term for perfume, used in North America for masculine scents. Light, fresh and fruity, typically composed of 2% 4% perfume oils in alcohol and water. Tend to be used in fragrances for younger people. Usually lasts for about 2 hours. A light spray composition with 5% 15% pure perfume essence dissolved in alcohol. Usually lasts for about 3 hours. Historically a genderless, term used to describe both men and women s fragrances. Contains 15% 20% pure perfume essence and lasts between 5 to 8 hours. A corruption of the Latin phrase per fumus (through smoke). The most concentrated and expensive of all fragrance options. Slightly oilier, parfum is composed of 20% 30% pure perfume essence. A single application of perfume can last up to 24 hours

7 FRAGRANCE TRIGGERS Did you know that smell is our strongest sense? The reason why is the fact that smell and emotion are connected to the same system of the brain, the limbic system. The olfactory center (how you smell) also interacts with the hippocampus, the part of the brain involved in forming new memories. That s why we often make deep emotional connections with aromas that can trigger a memory so strong it seems real. Just think of those weird moments of nostalgia when an aroma suddenly sends you back in time. The delicious aroma of turkey wafting out of the oven takes you back to a special family gathering. The rich smell of damp earth after rain reminds you of a long lost kiss. A sudden gust of the salty ocean breeze bring back memories of an endless summer of adventure. So when it comes to wearing a fragrance, it s not only a distinctive way to express yourself and to feel more attractive, it s also a way to leave a lasting impression and be even more memorable. Floral notes are charming, charismatic, sophisticated, mild, romantic, subtle and mellow all at the same time. They capture the essence of the fragile yet omnipotent feminine appeal. Floral perfumes showcase the mellowness and sweetness of the lily-of-the-valley, the stylish prominent resilience of the Bulgarian rose, the sophistication of the blossoming iris or out-of-this-world beauty of orchids. 9 THE SENSUAL ART OF APPLYING PERFUME If you want your spicy florals or light citruses to stick with you throughout the day, you have to hit all of the hot spots, a.k.a. the parts of your body that tend to heat up, as they will help diffuse the fragrance and make you smell damn good. The pulse points are the perfect activators for perfume. Since fragrance rises, it should be applied to several pulse points not just at the base of the throat. Consider the small of your back and your belly button. If you prefer to have your fragrance trail you, apply it behind the ears or at the nape of your neck just on the hairline. Hold perfume about 3-6 inches (20cm) away from your skin. Apply an even spray over a wider area. This will help your fragrance last longer than a generous amount in a small area. Extend the lifespan of your perfume by storing it in a cool, dark and dry environment such as your bedroom. Rapid heat fluctuations (like found in a bathroom) will cause the molecules in a fragrance to break apart. Sunlight does the same thing as well. Ensure the bottle cap is secure, to prevent the fragrance from evaporating. 17

10 FRAGRANCE RULES 101 LESS IS MORE Start with one spray. People should be close to smell the perfume but not overpowered by it. START WITH ONE SPRAY Re-spray only when required. You can always add more to your wrists depending how long the scent lasts. APPLY TO PULSE POINTS Your body heat will push the scent throughout the day, creating a nice scent trail commonly called sillage. Apply to warm parts of your body; chest, neck, lower jaw, wrist, forearm, inner elbow and shoulder. SAVE YOUR PERFUME Avoid walking into a spray. Spraying a fragrance will miss most of you and drop straight to the floor. DON T KILL THE NOTE Rubbing perfume into the skin seems like a sensible thing to do. In reality though, it breaks the molecular bond, making the scent weaker. However, if this gives you your desired fragrance level - go for it! Perfume speaks more about a woman than her handwriting. - Christian Dior APPLY TO DRY CLEAN SKIN Apply to dry skin after a shower. Avoid spraying on clothing as the fragrance isn t allowed to mix with your oils, and hence can t go through the natural stages of notes like it should. 19

11 PLANOGRAM OPTIONS SELLING PERFUME Buying a fragrance is a lot like buying a bottle of wine. Consumers generally have an idea of what they like and a price point in mind. So when it comes to retailing fragrances, it s a good idea to consider how wine stores stock and display alcohol. Since each fragrance family leads into the next, organizing fragrances by families and then price point makes it much easier for consumers to find what they like faster and with confidence. Provide consumers with the option to sample fragrances. This will ensure they find a fragrance they love. It will also open up opportunities to help them choose personalized gifts for loved ones. It is recommended that a consumer only try 2 fragrances at any one time. Suggest that they apply to the inside of each wrist. Wait minutes to see how the perfume reacts with their skin to experience the heart notes. Plus it s a great opportunity for them to browse around the store while they wait! 20 21

12 MERCHANDISING TIPS Women love perfume because it adds to their identity, whether they wear the same scent every day or different scents for different occasions. And these days, women don t regard perfume as a luxury, but rather a luxurious necessity. So when it comes to merchandising fragrances, it s important to have the right range and innovative merchandising to help appeal to these different identities and make the right choice of fragrance for different occasions be that socially, at work, a special night out or simply to reflect their different moods. Here s how to bring some pizazz to your fragrance section: Create a tester area and display testers by family to help de-mystify fragrance families and create a sense of order. Create showcase features for fragrances whenever possible. Use special events, holidays and special occasions to bring attention to the giftable appeal of perfume. Use in-store events and planogram resets to showcase and launch new perfume introductions. Consider how your fragrance section is merchandised, not just how well it shows off your stock. Pay attention to how well your stock is being handled and if it is being stored correctly. Color and odor profile can be adversely affected by heat and light. 17 WHAT ARE PHEROMONES ANYWAY? By definition, pheromones are a chemical substance that is usually produced by an insect or animal and serves to influence the behavior of the same species. There are alarm chemicals, food trail chemicals and that s right, sexy chemicals that increase sexual attraction. Humans and other animals have an olfactory system designed to detect and discriminate between thousands of chemical compounds.
