Students were eager to to see all our new books that are available. Their favorites from past years were also a part of their browsing through the shelves. We have the Maine Student Book Award and the Maine Chickadee Award nominees on display. Wonderful selections for our students. We will once again be charting the number of books read and do a report on each book. In late winter we will tally up the total and vote on our favorite book to submit to the State. There are many other new books available along with our selection of magazines. Young Rider (for the horse enthusiast), Cobblestone, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Zoobooks, American Girl, Catster and Dogster are several of the titles available. Grades K- 2 students have their personal library card. For each week they return a book on time, they place a shiny star on their card. Twice a year we will track how many stars they have accumulated. A reward will be given for those who have been faithful about returning books. September 15, 2017 From the Principal s Desk, We have had such a wonderful week! I hope you have been able to enjoy the weather this week and into the weekend. I certainly am appreciating this weather we have been having, as I see what other states are dealing with in other parts of our country. My heart goes out to families who are dealing with the aftermaths of the hurricanes. Especially children who cannot go to school because of no power or damaged schools. We have completed our second year participating in the Read to Ride summer reading program that the Maine Department of Education sponsors. Students needed to read at least 500 minutes this summer, record it on the log and pass in their sheets by September 15, 2017, to be put into a drawing at the school. We drew one girl and one boy. I have submitted the names to the state and they will be placed into a drawing for a bicycle at the state level. I am happy to announce that Kaylie M. and Nathan P. are our school level winners. These two students will receive a $5 gift certificate to the Scholastic Book Fair coming September 25th through the 29th. *= I hope we can get more participation next year. Have a wonderful weekend! Hannaford Helps Schools gives you the opportunity to raise funds for your school. This years program will begin August 27 and run through December 2, All collected school dollars must be turned in to the Hannaford store where your school is registered. Only one application is needed per household. Make sure the application is complete. Incomplete applications will slow down the process. A new application must be made out each year. Make sure you fill out the SY 2018 application. If your child attended school in a different district last year and received free meals, please do not assume he or she will be receiving free meals at RSU 40. I have no way of knowing if a child should be receiving free or reduced meals unless the child's name is on the state's Direct Certification list or I have received a completed application. MaineCare is not a qualifier. A-la-carte milk is $.50. Students who take a milk with their cold lunch will be charged $.50 even if he or she normally receives a free meal. A student who receives free meals may only have a free milk if he or she takes the schools breakfast or lunch. 3 News from the Health Of7ice September 15, 2017 National Pediculosis Prevention Month That s right September is National Head Lice Prevention Month! Adult head lice are roughly 2 3 mm long. Head lice infest the head and neck and attach their eggs to the base of the hair shaft. Lice move by crawling; they cannot hop or fly. Head lice infestation, or pediculosis, is spread most commonly by close person-to-person contact. Dogs, cats, and other pets do not play a role in the transmission of human lice. Both over-thecounter and prescription medications are available for treatment of head lice infestations. Where are head lice most commonly found? Head lice and head lice nits are found almost exclusively on the scalp, particularly around and behind the ears and near the neckline at the back of the head. Head lice or head lice nits sometimes are found on the eyelashes or eyebrows but this is uncommon. Head lice hold tightly to hair with hook-like claws at the end of each of their six legs. Head lice nits are cemented firmly to the hair shaft and can be difficult to remove even after the nymphs hatch and empty casings remain. What are the signs and symptoms of head lice infestation? Tickling feeling of something moving in the hair. Itching, caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of the head louse. Irritability and difficulty sleeping; head lice are most active in the dark. Sores on the head caused by scratching. These sores can sometimes become infected with bacteria found on the person's skin. How did my child get head lice? Head-to-head contact with an already infested person is the most common way to get head lice. Head-to-head contact is common during play at school, at home, and elsewhere (sports activities, playground, slumber parties, camp). Although uncommon, head lice can be spread by sharing clothing or belongings. This happens when lice crawl, or nits attached to shed hair hatch, and get on the shared clothing or belongings. Treatment for Head Lice - General Guidelines Treatment for head lice is recommended for persons diagnosed with an active infestation. All household members and other close contacts should be checked; those persons with evidence of an active infestation should be treated. Treat the infested person(s): Requires using an Over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medication. Follow these treatment steps: Before applying treatment, it may be helpful to remove clothing that can become wet or stained during treatment. Apply lice medicine, also called pediculicide, according to the instructions contained in the box or printed on the label. If the infested person has very long hair (longer than shoulder length), it may be necessary to use a second bottle. Pay special attention to instructions on the label or in the box regarding how long the medication should be left on the hair and how it should be washed out. Have the infested person put on clean clothing after treatment. If a few live lice are still found 8 12 hours after treatment, but are moving more slowly than before, do not retreat. The medicine may take longer to kill all the lice. Comb dead and any remaining live lice out of the hair using a fine toothed nit comb. If, after 8 12 hours of treatment, no dead lice are found and lice seem as active as before, the medicine may not be working. Do not retreat until speaking with your health care provider; a different pediculicide may be necessary. If your health care provider recommends a different pediculicide, carefully follow the treatment instructions contained in the box or printed on the label. Nit (head lice egg) combs, often found in lice medicine packages, should be used to comb nits and lice from the hair shaft. Many flea combs made for cats and dogs are also effective. After each treatment, checking the hair and combing with a nit comb to remove nits and lice every 2 3 days may decrease the chance of self reinfestation. Continue to check for 2 3 weeks to be sure all lice and nits are gone. Nit removal is not needed when treating with spinosad topical suspension. Re-treatment is meant to kill any surviving hatched lice before they produce new eggs. For some drugs, retreatment is recommended routinely about a week after the first treatment (7 9 days, depending on the drug) and for others only if crawling lice are seen during this period. Retreatment with lindane shampoo is not recommended. Supplemental Measures: Head lice do not survive long if they fall off a person and cannot feed. You don't need to spend a lot of time or money on housecleaning activities. Follow these steps to help avoid re infestation by lice that have recently fallen off the hair or crawled onto clothing or furniture. 1. Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items that the infested person wore or used during the 2 days before treatment using the hot water (130 F) laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle. Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry cleaned OR sealed in a plastic bag and stored for 2 weeks. 2. Soak combs and brushes in hot water (at least 130 F) for 5 10 minutes. 3. Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay. However, the risk of getting infested by a louse that has fallen onto a rug or carpet or furniture is very small. Head lice survive less than 1 2 days if they fall off a person and cannot feed; nits cannot hatch and usually die within a week if they are not kept at the same temperature as that found close to the human scalp. Spending much time and money on housecleaning activities is not necessary to avoid reinfestation by lice or nits that may have fallen off the head or crawled onto furniture or clothing. 4. Do not use fumigant sprays; they can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Adapted from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Website
