1 Medina Matters 29th June 2018 Head of School s update Karen Begley, Head of School It has been a busy week at Medina. Year 6 transition week has gone very well. Mrs Tuck has put on an excellent programme and staff have really engaged with the process. We have the army in today running a team-building event. A massive thank you to our Medina student leaders who have supported the week. On Tuesday night, our Hair & Beauty students held their Festival exhibition in the Library. Some very stylish and creative designs and some great photography. It was great to see so many people attend and money donated was for Stand up to Cancer The Year 11 Prom at Cowes Yacht Haven last night was a lovely evening. The girls looked beautiful in their dresses and the boys very dapper in their suits. As they arrived, they received a welcome drink and had their photos taken. They sat down to a two-course meal that was followed by awards and crowning of Prom King Ben Chiverton and Queen Andi Chatzakis. They then danced the night away! Next week is also going to be busy with lots going on. Year 7 are all involved in the Federation games on Monday and we will be welcoming all of Carisbrooke Colleges Year 7s to join us for the event. Students need to make sure they have lots of sun cream and water! Auditions were held this week for Matilda a musical in a week and rehearsals are next week. This promises to be an amazing performance! Next Thursday, 5th July, is Year 9 parents evening. Please contact Mrs Barry if you have any questions. Year 10 students will be attending a taster session at the VI Form Campus on Friday 6th July, to help them think about and plan their future career pathways, for when they leave Year 11. 2 Safeguarding News Gun-Free Game Apps and Thought-Provoking Nonviolent Games for children and young people (Common Sense Media) The US-based Common Sense Media organisation supports parents and their children's use of the internet, social media and gaming. They have searched through the currently available apps, and come up with a list of those that might be challenging and exciting, but don't involve the use of guns or violence. A reminder that our next Medina Parent Voice meeting on Tuesday 10th July at 6.10pm is this time at the Bargeman's Rest in Newport (a change from the library, as it's our last meeting of the year). Let me know if you can make it. The music department has asked if any parents could chip in with serving refreshments at the Medina Music Summer Concert at school on Wednesday 11th July, 7 8pm under the outdoor canopy at Medina College. Please let me know if you can help. Do come along anyway and enjoy an evening of music by Medina s talented young musicians it's always a really enjoyable event. The snow was against us in March but it's time! All year 7's are to come to school in PE kit and bring packed lunch. If you are entitled to FSM we will provide you with a packed lunch. 3 Governor Contact Day We will holding our Governor Contact Day on 11th July at the VI Form Campus. If you would like to be involved please contact Emma Shambrook by to express interest, The Governor Contact Day is used by Governors to meet different groups people from the federated schools to look at some core items that are crucial to success. The Governors meet with three different groups and consider the same three things with each group. This year the topics are: Improving behaviour in the schools Maximising potential Supporting student and staff wellbeing By discussing these topics with the main groups of stakeholders: Students, Staff and Parents, Governors can get an accurate picture of how each group thinks we might be able to help the schools in each of these areas. Discussions are brief but very focused, and every opinion is noted and considered by the full governing body. 4 Head Lice We have had several confirmed cases of Head Lice. Please see information below about prevention and treatment. Head lice are tiny insects that live in human hair. They're particularly common in children. Head lice are whitish to grey-brown in colour, and smaller than the size of a pinhead when first hatched. When fully grown they're about the size of a sesame seed. They can't fly, jump or swim and are spread by head-to-head contact, climbing from the hair of an infected person to the hair of someone else. A head lice infestation isn't the result of dirty hair or poor hygiene. All types of hair can be affected, regardless of its length and condition. Head lice only affect humans and can't be passed on to animals or be caught from them. Head lice often cause a person's scalp to itch. Itching isn't caused by lice biting the scalp, but by an allergy to the lice. However, not everyone is allergic to head lice, so you or your child may not notice a head lice infestation. Even if someone with head lice is allergic to them, itching can take up to three months to develop. In some cases, a rash may appear on the back of the neck. This is caused by a reaction to lice droppings. A female head louse lays eggs by cementing them to hairs (often close to the root), where they're kept warm by the scalp. The eggs are pinhead-size and difficult to see. After seven to 10 days, the baby lice hatch and the empty eggshells remain glued in place. These remains are known as nits. Nits are white and become more noticeable as the hair grows and carries them away from the scalp. Head lice feed by biting the scalp and feeding on blood. They take nine to 10 days to become fully grown. Head lice normally only crawl from head to head when they're adults or nearly mature juveniles. A female head louse may start to lay eggs from nine days after she's hatched. Therefore, to break the cycle and stop them spreading, they need to be removed within nine days of hatching. Head lice can be difficult to see, even when the head is closely inspected. Unhatched eggs or nits (empty eggshells) alone aren't enough to diagnose an active head lice infestation. This is because it can be difficult to distinguish between eggs and nits that are dead or alive. Nits also usually remain glued to hairs long after successful treatment. To confirm an active head lice infestation, a louse must be found through a reliable, accurate method, such as detection combing. Detection combing is the best way of finding head lice. It involves using a special fine-toothed head lice comb with a tooth spacing of mm to comb through the hair. The comb can trap even the smallest lice. It works better on wet hair but can also be used on dry hair. Head lice can usually be effectively treated with lotions or sprays designed to kill head lice, or by wet combing, using a specially designed head lice comb. Wet combing can be used without lotions or sprays, but it needs to be done regularly and can take a long time to do thoroughly. Lotions or sprays can be used as an alternative. However, to be totally effective they need to be applied correctly and thoroughly. Your pharmacist will be able to recommend an over-the-counter lotion or spray and give you advice about how to use it correctly. It s difficult to prevent a head lice infestation because head lice are spread by head-to-head contact. Regular detection combing for example, on a weekly basis is the best way to find new lice quickly. Lotions and sprays don t prevent head lice infestations and should only be used if a live louse has been found on your, or your child s, head. Head lice are a common problem, particularly in schoolchildren aged four to 11. It s difficult to know exactly how common head lice are because the problem is often treated at home, with people only visiting their GP if treatment is unsuccessful. However, it s thought that up to one in three children in the UK may get head lice at some point during the year.

5 Vacancies for Trust appointed/foundation Governors The Island Innovation Trust would like to hear from anyone interested in being one of their representatives on the Governing Body that has responsibility for Carisbrooke College and Medina College; governors appointed by the Trust are called Foundation Governors. A Foundation Governor must be wholly supportive of the vision and values of the Trust and details of the Trust can be found on its website at In summary, the Trust is committed to: Raising standards in education and improving the health of the community; Unlocking talent and enterprise; as well as Raising the aspirations of the community and embedding an ethos of lifelong learning. If you are interested in becoming a foundation governor, we would be pleased to hear from you. Most meetings are held in the early evening on Mondays, but the ability to visit the colleges during the day and participate in interviews for staff, meetings with parents and so on would be particularly helpful. The Trust is interested in speaking with individuals with a range and level of different skills and experience. At the moment there is a particular need for 1 person who could bring financial skills and experience to the Governing Body, but as there is currently more than one vacancy a range of other interests or experiences would be very relevant. All governors are expected to: Attend two meetings of the governing body per term; Be a member of one of the three governors committees which are: Resources, Aspire & Achieve and Welfare & Community Support one-off committee meetings during the school day such as discipline or appointment panels; Support functions of the colleges, mainly outside school hours; and Undertake the necessary governor training on a regular basis (at least annually). The selection criteria used to recruit the foundation governors will be: Sign up to the Trust s vision and values; Have appropriate financial skills and/or experience; Have relevant experience, such as being a governor (desirable but not essential) Link to one of the Trust organisations (desirable but not essential); and Have the time and availability to commit to the role. If you are interested in becoming a Foundation Governor you should submit your expression of interest on a form that can be obtained from Peter Prismall, Company Secretary for the Trust, via (peter.prismall@iif.org.uk). Completed forms should be submitted before Monday 9 th July 2018.
