Healing is affected by changes in extremities of blood vessels and decreased circulation. Gangrene development, infection of cuts and sores is common. Often, the limb has to be amputated. So here are some of the common precautions that can be followed for better foot health: Check your feet daily for redness or any type of irritation. For those tough-to-see areas, use a mirror or ask someone to assist you. Keep your feet clean by washing them daily, using warm water and mild soap. Dry thoroughly, especially between the toes to prevent fungal infection. When trimming toenails, cut them straight accross and be sure not to leave sharp edges that might cut other toes. Seek the assistance of a footcare professional if toenails are too thick to cut with a toenail clipper. Protect feet by wearing shoes that fit properly. Ill-fitted shoes are the source of most minor foot problems. Buy shoes that are made of cotton or leather. Their natural fibres allow feet to breath. Alternate shoes daily to allow them to air out and dry. Wear shoes and protective socks at ALL times. See your foot care specialist or physician if a wound, blister or skin irritation is not healing in a proper and timely manner. Never go barefoot indoors or out. A splinter, shard of glass or a small scrape can turn into an emergency for a person with diabetes. Avoid soaking feet. Soaking can dry them out and crack the skin. Cracked skin can lead to infection. Try not to cross legs when sitting. Unrestricted bloodflow to the feet is very important at all times. Never break-in a new pair of shoes. Shoes should fit comfortably from the start. Shoes should be purchased in the early evening when feet are at their largest.
