1 HORN LAKE HIGH SCHOOL MARINE CORPS JROTC 3360 CHURCH ROAD HORN LAKE, MS From: Senior Marine Instructor, Horn Lake High School MCJROTC To: Parents/Guardians Encl: (a) Required Gear List Subject: FIELD TRIP TO MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT PARRIS ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA (JUNE 5 TH - JUNE 10 TH 2011) 1. This letter is to inform you of the details concerning the upcoming trip to Parris Island. Several tasks must be accomplished prior to departure. Your assistance is required to meet these objectives. 2. A list of required items is provided, see Encl: (a). Please ensure that your cadet has all of the items listed when coming to school on Friday 27 May at 9:00 a.m. The gear WILL be stowed in the cadets' seabag. Please do not bring large bags or suitcases due to limited storage space. The items will be inspected and bags secured in the MCJROTC building until Sunday night (5 Jun 2011) departure. 3. Each cadet must submit $50.00 (cash/check) to the JROTC instructors no later than 27 May, 2011 to cover food (breakfast, lunch and dinner at Parris Island), additional uniform items, uniform cleaning and other incidental expenses while at Parris Island. All other food expenses are the responsibility of the cadet. Checks can be made out to Horn Lake High School. Food at rest-stops along the way, both to and from, South Carolina, is the responsibility of each cadet. Food is also permitted on the bus. If students wish to purchase memorabilia while in South Carolina, they must bring funds to cover this expense. Lastly, students will be given the opportunity to bowl and attend various other entertainment activities at the end of each day. If they desire to participate in these events, parents must ensure that students have adequate spending money to do so. Additionally, cadets will be visiting the Post Exchange (base store) where they will have the opportunity to purchase other desired items. Appropriate "spending money" for the aforementioned occasions is the responsibility of the cadet and his/her parents.

2 4. We are providing 1 adult female chaperone, 1 USCG Corpsman and the 2 JROTC Instructors. All chaperones have been vetted through the district's background check policy/requirement. Male and female cadets will be billeted in separate barracks. If there is an emergency and you need to speak to an instructor, you may call Please DO NOT call this number for non-emergency purposes. 5. Male cadets must have a fresh haircut and be clean shaven when they report to HLHS for departure. Cadets who report to HLHS on the departure date without a regulation haircut will not be allowed to travel. This letter will serve as the parental notification and authorization to do so. All male cadets with facial hair will be required to shave daily; therefore, they must bring appropriate shaving materials. a variety of regulation cuts Hair above the ears and around the neck shall be tapered from the lower natural hairline upwards at least 3/4 inch and outward not greater than 3/4 inch to blend with hairstyle. Female hairstyles shall not be outrageously multicolored or faddish, to include shaved portions of the scalp (other than the neckline), or have designs cut or braided into the hair. Hair coloring must look natural and complement the individual. Haircuts and styles shall present a balanced appearance. Lopsided and extremely asymmetrical styles are not authorized. Ponytails, pigtails, widely spaced individual hanging locks, and braids which protrude from the head, are not authorized. Multiple braids are authorized. Braided hairstyles shall be conservative. When a hairstyle of multiple braids is worn, braids shall be of uniform dimension, small in diameter (approx. 1/4 inch), and tightly interwoven to present a neat, professional, well groomed appearance. Foreign material (i.e., beads, decorative items) shall not be braided into the hair. Short hair may be braided in symmetrical fore and aft rows (corn rowing) which minimize scalp exposure. Corn row ends shall not

3 protrude from the head, and shall be secured only with inconspicuous rubber bands that match the color of the hair. Appropriateness of a hairstyle shall also be judged by its appearance when headgear is worn. All headgear shall fit snugly and comfortably around the largest part of the head without distortion or excessive gaps. Hair shall not show from under the front of the brim of the combination hat, garrison, or command ball caps. Hairstyles which do not allow headgear to be worn in this manner, or which interfere with the proper wear of protective masks or equipment are prohibited. When in uniform, the hair may touch, but not fall below a horizontal line level with the lower edge of the back of the collar. With jumper uniforms, hair may extend a maximum of 1-1/2 inches below the top of the jumper collar. Long hair, including braids, which fall below the lower edge of the collar shall be neatly and inconspicuously fastened, pinned, or secured to the head. No portion of the bulk of the hair as measured from the scalp will exceed approximately 2 inches. A maximum of two small barrettes/combs/clips, similar to hair color, may be used in the hair. Additional bobby pins or rubber bands matching hair color may be used to hold hair in place, if necessary. Fabric elastics and colored rubber bands/pins are not authorized. Hair ornaments shall not present a safety or FOD (Foreign Object Damage) hazard. The bottom-line on female hair is that the cover (hat) must fit properly and snug. Females who report to HLHS on departure night with inappropriate hair will not be allowed to attend th~ excursion. ALL CADETS MALE AND FEMALE MUST TRIM FINGERNAILS TO A LENGTH NO LONGER THAN THE TIPS OF THE FINGERS. Long fingernails represent a significant safety hazard while participating in various events. 6. Cadets will be visiting the depot museum, morning colors, performing physical training to include running, obstacle course, confidence course, and rappelling. Cadets that have received recent injuries or that are currently under the care of a physician and/or cadets that are currently taking medication or that are required to use an inhaler due to asthma must report this to the Senior Instructor ~ediately. 6. The week at the depot will be a challenge both mentally and physically for your son/daughter and at the same time a fun and rewarding experience. It will enforce some of the traits that we

4 strive to instill in them throughout the year in JROTC such as Self-Discipline, Self-Confidence and Self-Direction as well as learning leadership and teamwork. 7.
