3 GROOMING STANDARDS Regulations & requirements are standards to maintain uniformity within the Marine Corps Compliance is not optional 3
4 GROOMING STANDARDS Definitions: Eccentric: - Deviating from an established pattern or style - Deviation from conventional or accepted usage or conduct especially in odd or whimsical ways - Departing from the established or traditional norm Faddish: - A brief fashion adopted with wide enthusiasm 4
5 GROOMING STANDARDS Eccentric or Faddish styles include: -Hair Styles -Facial Hair -Make-up -Nail polish -Jewelry -Eyeglasses 5
6 MALE GROOMING STANDARDS Hair: back and sides clean shaven below hair line and evenly graduated to no more than three inches in length on top: 6 Styled to not interfere with the proper wear of headgear Block-style trimming is unauthorized Clipped to the scalp only during recruit training or for medical purposes Styles will conform to the natural shape of the head The bulk of hair is not to exceed approximately 2 above the scalp when styled

8 MALE GROOMING STANDARDS The below are authorized when providing a conservative, natural appearance that does not detract from natural complexion: - Hair gel & mousse - Hair dyes, tints, bleaches, frostings Color changes that detract from a professional image are prohibited 8
9 MALE GROOMING STANDARDS ECCENTRIC HAIR-CUTS - Single patches of hair on top of head - Strip down the center of the scalp - Mohawk or Landing Strip 9
10 MALE GROOMING STANDARDS ECCENTRIC HAIR-CUTS - Large open (Bald) area on top of the head - Etchings - Braiding of male hair 10
11 MALE GROOMING STANDARDS Facial Hair: - Clean-shaven at all times with the exception of eyebrows and eyelashes - A mustache may be worn within standards 11
12 Sideburns: MALE GROOMING STANDARDS 12 - Tapered or flared - Will not grow below the top of the orifice of the ear - Individual sideburn hair will not exceed 1/8 inch
13 MALE GROOMING STANDARDS Mustache will be: - Neatly trimmed Mustache will not: 13 - Extend past the corners of the mouth - Drop below the margin of the upper lip or the nostril area - Exceed ½ inch
14 MALE GROOMING STANDARDS Nose/Ear/Chest hair: - Must be clipped often 14
15 MALE GROOMING STANDARDS Nose/Ear/Chest hair: - Chest hair shall not protrude in an unsightly manner over the top of your undershirt or the long sleeve khaki shirt 15
16 MALE GROOMING STANDARDS Finger nails will be: - Clean and neatly trimmed so as to not: - Interfere with performance of duty - Detract from military image - Present a safety hazard - Extend past the fingertips Polish for males is not allowed 16

18 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Hair may touch the collar but may not fall below the collar s lower edge - Hair style must be conservative, professional, and feminine in appearance - Appropriate style will be based on headgear worn 18
19 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Three basic hairstyle categories : 1. Short Length - Hair extends no more than 1 inch from the scalp (excluding bangs) - No shorter than ¼ inch from scalp but may be graduated to 2 inches 19 - Bangs will not fall into the line of sight or extend beyond the hairline at the temples
20 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS 2. Medium Length - Hair that does not extend beyond the lower edge of the collar (all uniforms) and extends more than 1 inch from the scalp - Medium length hair is not required to be secured - Hair may graduate in length but not exceed 1 inch length difference from front to back 20 - Bulk of the hair may not exceed 2 inches from the scalp
21 3. Long Hair - Hair that extends beyond the collar s (all uniforms) lower edge 21 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS - Long hair will be neatly fastened or pinned except that bangs may be worn - Bulk of the hair may not exceed 2 inches from the scalp except for: - Bun may extend 3 inches from scalp
22 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Faddish, exaggerated, unauthorized hair styles: - Locks and twists (except French rolls and twist) - Hair sculpting (directional flow, twist, spiking) - Buns or braids with hair extending at the end - Multiple braids that do not start at the top of the head 22 - Hairstyles with severe angles
23 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Hairstyles for Physical Training in PT Gear: - Short & medium length hair may be worn down, except when a safety hazard - Long hair must be secured (Ponytails are authorized) - Barrettes and ponytail holders must be consistent with hair color Ribbons, bows, scrunchies, alligator clips etc are: NOT AUTHORIZED!! 23
24 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Hairstyles while in Boots & Utilities: - Standard PT hair guidelines - When boots & utilities are worn in a non-pt environment: - Hair must be secured - In accordance with the uniform hairstyle regulations 24
25 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS BRAID S: - Medium and long hair may be braided in a neat, professional, and well groomed appearance 25
26 26 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Multiple braid s are authorized and must be of uniform dimension: - Approx. ¼ in in diameter - No more than 1/8 inch of scalp between braids - Tightly interwoven - Straight line in one direction continuing to the end of the hair - Secure ends with inconspicuous rubber bands - If multiple braid s are worn they must encompass the entire head
27 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Hair Extensions: authorized for medium and long hair only Must have the same general appearance as the individual s natural hair Wigs are authorized: Must have the same general appearance as the individual s natural hair 27
28 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Hair Accessories: - Inconspicuous hairpins and bobby pins are authorized - Hair nets are NOT authorized - Barrettes, combs, rubber bands are authorized if concealed by the hair 28
29 29 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Hair Color: - The below are authorized only when providing a conservative, natural appearance that does not detract from natural complexion: - Dyes - Tints - Bleaching - Frostings Color changes that detract from a professional image are not authorized
30 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Body Hair will be removed when: - Leg hair protrudes through hosiery - Causes a visibly uneven texture under the hosiery Cosmetics: - If worn, applied conservatively - Must complement skin tone - Exaggerated or faddish styles are inappropriate 30
31 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Fingernails: Will be no longer than ¼ inch from the tip of the finger Nail polish: - Service & Dress uniforms Shades of red Including pinks and burgundies Must compliment the skin tone 31
32 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Nail polish: - Utility uniform Colored polish is not authorized French manicure is authorized for ALL uniforms Press-on & Acrylic Nails: are authorized for wear if maintained within regulation 32
33 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Lipstick, Lip gloss & lip balm must be: - Shades of red - Within the red spectrum to include pinks and burgundies - Clear is also acceptable Lip liner must be the same shade as the lip stick, lip gloss or lip-balm 33
34 FEMALE GROOMING STANDARDS Additional make-up: Mascara, must be in tones of black or brown Cosmetics with a sparkle/glitter or similar finish are not authorized False eyelashes will be natural in appearance 34
35 HYGIENE STANDARDS Hands & Feet: - Ensure hands and feet are clean and nails are neatly trimmed Teeth: - Brush and floss teeth regularly for good oral hygiene Facial Area: - Keep face, nose, and ears clean 35

37 TATTOOS TATTOOS: - Tattoos are acceptable only when the content and location of a tattoo is within Marine Corps standards 37

42 TATTOOS 42 Those who currently have sleeve tattoos will be grandfathered: - His or her tattoos will be photographed, documented, measured - Entered in the Marine s service record book - At unspecified intervals the individual will be checked to insure no additional tattoos have been added Tattoos may impact retention or special duty assignments
43 ACCESSORIES Jewelry Bags/Backpacks Electronics Unauthorized items Sunglasses Religious apparel Gum and tobacco 43
44 JEWELRY: ACCESSORIES - Authorized for wear with all uniforms - Commanders may require the removal of jewelry for safety/tactical purposes 44
45 Rings: Must be inconspicuous One ring per hand (except wedding set worn on same finger) Worn at base of finger near palm Thumb rings are not authorized Watches: Inconspicuous watches are authorized ACCESSORIES 45
46 Necklaces: ACCESSORIES May be worn but not seen, to include the chain around the neck Earrings: policy applies at all times: 46 Male Marine s are NOT AUTHORIZED to wear earrings at any time Female Marine s are authorized one earring per ear in civilian or military attire
47 ACCESSORIES Dental Ornamentation: use of permanent or removable gold, platinum caps for ornamentation is prohibited - Teeth will not be ornamented with designs, jewels or initials - Unnatural shaping of the teeth for non-medical reasons is prohibited 47
48 EYEGLASSES: ACCESSORIES - Will be conservative in appearance - Eccentric eyepieces are prohibited - Chains, bands or ribbons will not be used Eyeglass restraints, conservative in style, are authorized for safety purposes Manufacturers logos should be small and inconspicuous 48
49 ACCESSORIES SUNGLASSES: - Worn on leave, liberty and in garrison - Will NOT be worn in formation unless authorized by the commander or proper medical authority - Green, black or brown lenses only 49
50 ACCESSORIES CONTACT LENSES when worn in uniform, lenses must: - Imitate a natural eye color - Pupil shape Designs are unauthorized 50
51 ACCESSORIES BAGS/BACKPACKS: - Equipment bags such as issued camera bags may be worn in uniform - Personally owned bags/packs will only be hand-carried while in uniform - Hydration systems may be worn with the utility and PT uniforms per local regulation 51
52 ACCESSORIES ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT WHILE IN UNIFORM: - Cell phones use while walking is prohibited to include ear pieces - Walking with ear piece in the ear is prohibited - IPODS, MP3 players or any audio device is prohibited while walking or running in uniform 52
53 ACCESSORIES UNAUTHORIZED ITEMS: - Key chains/lanyards/security badges except as required in the performance of duty - Corsages, boutonnieres, or other similar items - Cellular phones and pagers are not authorized for wear in uniform except as required in the performance of duty 53
54 ACCESSORIES RELIGIOUS APPAREL: - Subject to removal due to health, safety, or mission requirements - May be worn as follows: - When not visible or apparent in uniform - Visible when attending divine services or while in a chapel or other house of worship 54
55 Food, Gum and Tobacco: ACCESSORIES - Smoking, dipping/chewing tobacco, chewing gum or the consumption of food or drink while walking in uniform is prohibited - Good judgment will govern the application of this policy in the field environment 55

57 BODY COMPOSITION Physical fitness is required of every Marine regardless of age, rank or duty assignment Self discipline is inherent to physical fitness 57
58 BODY COMPOSITION WEIGHT AND BODY FAT STANDARDS Height & weight evaluations are done semiannually Females are allowed 26% body fat - Exempt during pregnancy - Allowed six months after birth to be within standards Males are allowed 18% body fat 58
59 BODY COMPOSITION WEIGHT AND BODY FAT STANDARDS Physical Performance Evaluation: - Marines exceeding body fat standards - 1st class PFT - Accommodates Marines of a larger body composition/muscle mass due to physical training 59
60 BODY COMPOSITION WEIGHT AND BODY FAT STANDARDS When the criteria for the physical performance evaluation is met the body fat percentages change as follows: Females: 30% Males: 22% 60
61 BODY COMPOSITION Weight Control Program - Marine s who exceed the body fat standards - Do not meet the requirements for the Physical Performance Evaluation - Assists Marine s in losing excess weight 61 - Marines are removed from the program once weight standards are met

65 CIVILIAN ATTIRE Wearing of civilian attire is a privilege extended to all Marines by the Commandant of the Marine Corps To retain this privilege, a well dressed, conservative personal appearance is required Civilian attire should equal the high standard associated with wearing the Service Charlie uniform 65
