Her practice involves long durational performance characterized by near-monastic rigor, and designed as experiential studies in what she considers the biggest and most critical element in performance: time. Her tests of her own physical and psychological endurance confront the viewer, who is invited to acknowledge his or her choice between an active and passive response. Arjona was one of the performers chosen by Marina Abramovic for The Artist Is Present, her retrospective exhibition at MoMA in New York in As part of the preliminary work towards this exhibition, Abramovic and Arjona jointly presented the workshop Cleaning the House. In 2009, she was an artist-in-residence at the Robert Wilson s Watermill Arts Center, and has staged performances at major museums and venues in South America, the US and Europe before and since.

What has long been regarded as a radical transition from the earlier minimalist painting to the fluid and dreamlike pictorial mode that she famously came to term radical figuration, is [recently being] now perceived as a continuum rather than a paradigm shift. In the last decades Jo Baer has dramatically expanded the conceptual framework of her earliest minimalist paintings not so much replacing one ism with another, as reconciling and binding together her myriad and divergent concerns (ranging from the science of color perception to the workings of myth and collective memory.)

Her work encompasses text, sculpture, drawing and installation. She became known for her early written transcriptions of Hollywood war films such as Top Gun and Apocalypse Now. From these wordscapes to her use of found and transformed military aircraft, Banner juxtaposes the brutal and the sensual, performing a complete cycle of intimacy, attraction and alienation. Publishing, in the broadest sense, is at the heart of her practice. In 1997 she started working under the title of The Vanity Press. She has published books, objects and performances often deploying a playful attitude and bringing pseudo grandeur to the act of publishing.

Much of her practice explores and depicts the accretion of time from the length of time it takes for a candle to burn down to the repetitious activity of taking graphite rubbings from objects that bare the traces of their use or function. In her hands a map of the world is transformed into a strange expanse of shimmering substance, or the bounce of a rubber ball on a piece of paper creates the effect of a cosmic explosion. Her interventions produce objects that combine a minimalistic rigour and the seemingly endless endeavour to make sense of the world of objects by empirical study.

His epic and large-scale series of drawings create historical panoramas that depict geo-political themes, ideologies and utopias from the 20th century until today. His extensive historical and pictorial research results in series of ink drawings based on old newspaper cuttings, postcards, posters and other propaganda. The ideologically loaded terminology and imagery are the central focus of this work. The differences between these re-productions and the original documents reveal how we continuously rewrite history. In recent years Fernando Bryce has not only analysed the print media, but also looked more and more towards the film industry and the early beginnings of the medialisation of propaganda.

In the 1960s, Burga was a member of the group Arte Nuevo. The group is widely credited with the introduction of the new avant-garde tendencies in the Peruvian context, such as Pop art, Op art and happenings. The recent new reassessment of Burga s work is realized in the context of activities pursued by a broad network of Latin American art theorists and artists, who are presently embarking upon a rereading of the conceptualisms of the South (Southern Conceptualisms Network).

Städtisches Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach (G) Conceptual artist Meg Cranston creates sculptures and installations with an air of whimsy that often belies the symbolism and deeper implications of the ideas she explores. Her works frequently seem lighthearted for The Complete Works of Jane Austen (1991), she filled a large weather balloon with all the air necessary to read Austen s entire oeuvre out loud while other pieces carry more serious references. Magical Death (2007), a display of piñatas fashioned to look like Cranston herself, fused a comical conceit with an implied portrayal of the artist as martyr to be bashed with sticks as the piñatas would be. Other installation pieces evoke similarly personal themes: for Keep Same Over (1989) she displayed all of her personal belongings in a gallery space, while for One of Each (1990) she exhibited 150 doll figures, catalogued in an inscrutable checklist.

Her works are dominated by a fictional world made up of contrasts, contradictions, resistance and restlessness. Her demands of the medium are extensive; she is always engaged in a radical interrogation both painting and artistic work processes.

38 Richard Hamilton Richard Hamilton Bathroom Fig. 2, undated Photography framed 62,5 x 57 x 2,5 cm Edition 12/20

39 Richard Hamilton CV Richard Hamilton was born on February 24, 1922, in London. When still a teenager, he attended evening art classes before he studied painting at the Royal Academy School from 1938 to 1940, earning his living with jobs in the advertising industry. From 1941 to 1945 Hamilton worked as an industrial designer. In 1946 Hamilton resumed his studies of painting at the Royal Academy School, but was expelled in July because he defied his teachers instructions. From 1948 to 1951 he continued to study at the Slade School of Art in London, where he mainly concentrated on etching. His study of James Joyce s novel Ulysses, which he first illustrated in 1948, formed Hamilton s understanding of images. In 1952 Richard Hamilton founded the Independet Group at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London together with Eduardo Paolozzi, Lawrence Alloway and several other architects. This group turned out to be decisive for the development of English Pop Art. At that time he taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London and at the Royal College of Art from 1957 to In 1956 he created his most famous work Just what is it that makes today s homes so different, so appealing?, which was initially intended as a poster for the now legendary exhibition This is tomorrow. This collage is said to be the beginning of English Pop Art. After a trip to New York in 1963, Richard Hamilton began to combine elements of photography and painting in his pictures. During the 1980s he intensively studied the opportunities provided by digital media and their effect on image perception and fine arts. In 1992 the Tate Gallery in London showed a retrospective. In 2003 Museum Ludwig in Cologne hosted a work show organized in co-operation with the artist himself, entitled Introspective. In 1993 Richard Hamilton represented Great Britan at the Venice Biennale.

This group s particular focus was the provisional aesthetic of making do and getting by adopted by ordinary people during Cuba s years of acute economic crisis caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union. A decade later, Hernández left Cuba and moved to Europe. Since then, all of Hernández s work paintings, drawings, collages, installations and sculpture has constituted an investigation into the realities hidden beyond realities of revolutionary Cuba and its failed Utopia.

Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent, Belgium University of Chicago, USA Working across historical boundaries and artistic disciplines, Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven explores different ways of describing the world, which she locates between the antitheses of eros and ratio. In terms of content, this is linked on the one hand to concepts of the sexualized female body, and on the other to a technoid algorithmic logic; formally, this tension manifests itself in both computer-generated and hand-drawn images. In van Kerckhoven s work, the interior is a place she has loaded with references, above all to philosophical constructs whose representatives get together and hold discursive seances.

Drawing on vivid childhood memories, historical and contemporary figurative imagery, he searches out hidden aspects of the human condition. Creating a poetic patchwork of disparate symbols, Johnny Miller invites us to draw on our lived experience to explore the puzzling islands of identity that we inhabit. A common theme is the culturally imposed and/or fragile nature of masculinity.through his art Johnny Miller shares a very personal artistic journey with us that feels timeless and, though he asks the viewer to step beyond the everyday, he always guides us with a generous and humorous spirit.

It is charged with history, with politics and ideas that cut deep into our consciousness. Mariele Neudecker s work keeps returning to the landscape tradition in art, but through this she deals with questions around technology and science, collective experience and time. Neudecker is interested in our perception of the world and how we hold on, re-create and memorize our experiences. Through the use of a broad range of media including sculpture, installation, film and photography, she examines what defines the line between nature and landscape, and reflects on how any definition of the contemporary sublime is continuously changing.

Her work has included diverse associations as prisoners, love letters, ironworkers, Jewish mysticism, disaster, ruin, violence and Alchemy. The energy of her line, both powerful and delicate, explodes the notion of what a single mark, and material can do. For Piene drawing sits deeply at the root and origin of architecture, engineering, fashion, design, planning, thinking, mapping and sculpting. All of Piene s media, including her sculpture and video, reflect a depth of inquiry into the human condition which is often fearless, and to that point, directly questions notions of fear, courage and fortitude. Piene has lately staged performances and public speeches which tie together these concerns in ways which unravel the human form, and future, as it wavers between something idolized and real.

In portrayals of the human condition she explores dimensions of hierarchal structures, often through site specific investigations, from which she brings to the surface hidden conflicts, abnormality, vulnerability and ultimately the individual s loss of control. In her work with moving images, she tears down the only story with a myriad of voices, situations, moments and narratives. She persistently negotiates space to suggest an alternative cinematic experience of the world.

The photographs of these architectural components can be arranged freely allowing ever new combininations.
