2 President s Message Pacific Standard Time Pacific Standard Time in Southern California Pacific Standard Time, a collaboration of more than 60 cultural institutions across Southern California, is here and it s telling the story of the birth of the Los Angeles art scene and how it became a major new force in the art world. Pacific Standard Time at the Getty The Getty presents four exhibitions as part of the Pacific Standard Time collaboration, along with a variety of lectures, talks, concerts, courses, and family activities. Combined, they illustrate the international significance and impact of art produced in Los Angeles between 1945 and James Cuno President and Chief Executive Officer The J. Paul Getty Trust In my first month at the J. Paul Getty Trust as president and CEO, I ve spent a lot of time meeting and learning about the work of my talented new colleagues, from scholars to scientists, curators to educators. It s been exciting to get a firsthand look at the full extent of the Getty s programs and projects, and the remarkable expertise of its staff. I can honestly say there is no institution like the Getty with its four distinct, yet complementary, programs the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Research Institute the Getty Conservation Institute, and the Getty Foundation. The Getty s great promise is that, by leveraging the strengths of each program to the advantage of all, our experience and knowledge of the world s artistic legacy and its preservation for generations to come will be enhanced for the benefit of the world. But even with our many international efforts, we re not just involved in the world beyond Los Angeles. We re deeply committed to Los Angeles. I ve arrived here just as the finishing touches are being put on Pacific Standard Time, a decade-long investment by the Getty Foundation and Getty Research Institute, in the documentation and presentation of works of art representative of Southern California s vibrant artistic culture from 1945 to With Getty support, over nine months more than 60 museums and galleries, from Santa Barbara to San Diego and out to Palm Springs, will present exhibitions, performances, symposia, lectures, and publications that tell the story of Southern California s key role as an center of artistic production in the mid-20th century. Join the Southern California arts community as it explores and celebrates the significance of the crucial post-world War II years through the tumultuous period of the 1960s and 70s. Pacific Standard Time encompasses developments from L.A. Pop to post-minimalism; from modernist architecture and design to multi-media installations; from the films of the African American L.A. Rebellion to the feminist activities of the Woman s building; from ceramics to Chicano performance art; and from Japanese American design to the pioneering work of artists collectives. Cultural institutions of every size and character across Southern California, from Greater Los Angeles to San Diego, and San Diego to Palm Springs, are involved. Each institution will make its own contribution to this grand-scale story of artistic innovation and social change, told through a multitude of simultaneous exhibitions and programs. Information on exhibition and programming taking place at the can be found in this issue of At the Getty. You can also visit us online at getty.edu/pacificstandardtime where you ll find a variety of interactive features to explore the artists and movements of the era. Pacific Standard Time: Crosscurrents in L.A. Painting and Sculpture, This exhibition charts the abundant artistic innovation in post World War II Los Angeles. During this period, Los Angeles artists looked for new approaches, subjects, and techniques for art making, including experimenting with the materials and processes of the pioneering industries in the region and the local surf and car cultures. This major international loan exhibition leads viewers on a dynamic tour from the emergence of an indigenous strain of modernism evident in the hard-edge paintings, assemblage sculpture, and large-scale ceramics of the 1950s, to the subsequent development of iconic Pop images of the city in the 1960s, and the conceptual and material contributions of Light and Space art and process painting that fostered the advanced art of the 1970s. October 1, 2011 February 5, 2012 : Museum, Exhibitions Pavilion Greetings from L.A.: Artists and Publics, Beginning in the 1950s, Southern California saw the emergence of newly diverse audiences for art. While gallerists cultivated collectors, Beat artists Wallace Berman and George Herms distributed handcrafted works among friends. Others, including Chris Burden, exploited the mass media to circulate their work. Art schools became innovative forums for artists such as Judy Chicago and John Baldessari. Social and political movements that championed peace and feminism mobilized artists to take their messages to the streets. Drawn from the Getty Research Institute s archives of Los Angeles art, this exhibition features photographs, ephemera, correspondence, and artwork many on view for the first time that reveal how these artists disseminated their works to a broader public. October 1, 2011 February 5, 2012 : Research Institute Exhibition Gallery Gray Column, , De Wain Valentine. Cast polyester resin. Collection of De Wain Valentine, Courtesy Ace Gallery. De Wain Valentine From Start to Finish: De Wain Valentine s Gray Column Gray Column was one of the largest sculptures De Wain Valentine ever cast with polyester resin the material with which he worked throughout the 1960s and 1970s to create his dazzling circles and columns. This monumental, free-standing slab, measuring 12 feet high and eight feet wide, will be displayed to the public for the first time. Curated by the Getty Conservation Institute and on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum, From Start to Finish tells the story of how this extraordinary piece was made and features preparatory drawings and maquettes, videos documenting the fabrication process, interviews with the artist, and a discussion of the conservation of this sculpture. Through March 12, 2012 : Museum, West Pavilion Even greater than the many exhibitions and events will be the archival record that my colleagues working on Pacific Standard Time have assembled. Materials long languishing in storerooms and cupboards have been preserved, catalogued, and rendered accessible in print and online. And oral histories of artists, collectors, and gallerists have been recorded for the archives, many of which are available on the Getty s Pacific Standard Time website. A critical moment in the history of Southern California and of modern art, one in real danger of being lost, has been preserved. In Focus: Los Angeles, This exhibition presents approximately 30 photographs from the Museum s permanent collection made in Los Angeles between 1945 and Both iconic and relatively unknown works are featured by artists whose careers are defined by their association with the city, who may have lived in Los Angeles for a few brief but influential years, or whose visit inspired them to create memorable images. Works by Robert Cumming, Joe Deal, Judy Fiskin, Anthony Friedkin, Robert Heinecken, Anthony Hernandez, Man Ray, Edmund Teske, William Wegman, Garry Winogrand, Max Yavno and others are loosely grouped around the themes of experimental photography, car culture, vernacular architecture, and fantasy and the film industry. I invite you to visit the Getty over the course of Pacific Standard Time to experience the exhibitions and to take part in a related lecture, artist conversation, or musical event. But I also encourage you to visit at least one other museum or gallery participating in this unprecedented project perhaps one you ve been meaning to get to, or haven t visited in a while. I promise you will come away with a greater understanding and appreciation for Los Angeles important contribution to the art world. 3 Lyonel Feininger: Photographs, A highly regarded painter, printmaker, and draftsman, Lyonel Feininger (American, ) was one of the first masters appointed to the newly established Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, in Like many other figures at the innovative art school, Feininger turned to photography as a tool for visual exploration. Beginning in 1928 and for the next decade, he used the camera to explore transparency, reflection, night imagery, and the effects of light and shadow. Organized by the Harvard Art Museum/Busch-Reisinger Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in cooperation with the J. Paul Getty Museum, this exhibition Bauhaus, March 26, 1929, Lyonel Feininger. Gelatin silver print. Harvard Art Museums/Busch-Reisinger Museum, Gift of T. Lux Feininger. Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn presents the first comprehensive overview of little-known photographs by one of the most important artists of the 20th century. The presentation at the Getty is accompanied by a selection of Bauhaus photographs from the Museum s permanent collection. October 25, 2011 March 11, 2012 : Museum, Center for Photographs, West Pavilion Self-Portrait, about 1845, Charles Samuel Keene. Pen and brown ink over black chalk. The J. Paul Getty Museum Images of the Artist This exhibition investigates some of the ways in which artists have represented themselves, their fellow artists, or their trade over the past five centuries. Raising compelling issues about identity and image-making, this rich theme is explored through a selection of over 40 objects mostly drawings but also prints, photographs, paintings, and sculpture from the permanent holdings of the J. Paul Getty Museum, complemented by loans from local collections. Works range from portraits and self-portraits to depictions of the artist s life and space as well as allegorical images. November 15, 2011 February 12, 2012 : Museum, West Pavilion Gothic Grandeur: Manuscript Illumination, The word Gothic evokes visions of soaring spires, graceful flying buttresses, and sparkling stained glass. The term is also applied to the style of manuscript illumination that reigned in Europe from around 1200 to The Gothic illuminated manuscripts in this exhibition, drawn from the Getty Museum s collections, are characterized by whimsical marginal decorations, vivid narratives, and a naturalistic style of painting. The period also saw an explosion in the variety of illustrated books being produced, ranging from scholastic university treatises to entertaining romances. On February 27, the pages of the manuscripts will be turned to allow visitors to see additional treasures. December 13, 2011 May 13, 2012 : North Pavilion Narrative Interventions in Photography Featuring contemporary artists Eileen Cowin (American, born 1947), Carrie Mae Weems (American, born 1953), and Simryn Gill (Singaporean, born 1959), this exhibition explores the concept of storytelling through three distinct bodies of photographic works. Cowin s images present a philosophical questioning of narrative and what is fact or fiction; Weems s art attempts to rewrite a profound aspect of human history; while photographs by Gill reflect a more personal interaction with stories through deconstructed books. Although each artist has a different approach, all are concerned with photography and the notion of narrative: implied, real, or revised. October 25, 2011 March 11, 2012 : Museum, Center for Photographs, West Pavilion Modern Antiquity: Picasso, de Chirico, Léger, and Picabia in the Presence of the Antique An extraordinary episode in the history of European modernism is the alliance between the avant-garde and the antique. Juxtaposing 20th-century works with ancient objects, this major international loan exhibition focuses on how four eminent artists reinvented and transformed antiquity between 1905 and Classicizing creations such as de Chirico s enigmatic piazzas, Picasso s postcubist women, Léger s mechanized nudes, and Picabia s transparencies made the arts of antiquity modern. The a reconstruction of an ancient Roman house and its antiquities collection provide a unique environment to experience modern art in relation to the classical past. Paul Getty Museum into the courtyard. Like all of Irwin s work since the 1970s, this piece is site-conditional, organized conceptually and physically by the space in which it is installed. Just as architect Richard Meier considered the Getty rotunda as a lobby that encompasses both the indoors and the outdoors, Irwin s sculpture literally moves from inside to outside, allowing the building s glass wall to pass through its sculptural form. Black on White is the second artwork produced by Irwin for the. In 1997, he completed the Central Garden, one of his best-known commissions. The presentation of Black on White will coincide with the October 2011 release of the Getty Publications book Notes Toward a Conditional Art, a significant collection of Irwin s published and unpublished writing on postwar American art.
