3 May 2018 communication and partnerships department Paris cedex 04 directeur Benoît Parayre téléphone (0) courriel attachée de presse Élodie Vincent téléphone (0) courriel PRESS RELEASE SABINE WEISS LES VILLES, LA RUE, L AUTRE 20 JUNE - 15 OCTOBER 2018 GALERIE DE PHOTOGRAPHIES, FORUM-1 The exhibition staged in the Galerie de Photographies features nearly 80 vintage photographs by Sabine Weiss, mostly unpublished, on the theme of the street. Dating from 1945 to 1960, they come from a group purchased by the Musée National d Art Moderne and a recent donation by the photographer, who decided to entrust a large selection of her works to the Centre Pompidou. #ExpoSabineWeiss Sabine Weiss Place de la Concorde, Paris, France 1953 Centre Pompidou, MNAM-CCI/P.Migeat/ Dist. RMN-GP Avec le soutien de En partenariat média avec Sabine Weiss is now the last representative of the great «Humanist» photography movement. The images produced within this typically French movement have often misguidedly been seen as sentimentalist. French humanist photographers, who mostly worked with the Rapho agency (Edouard Boubat, Robert Doisneau, Jeanine Niepce and Willy Ronis, among others), provided a record of their times through their sociological, non-critical observations. Like her colleagues, Sabine Weiss was interested in everyday life. In these photographs taken for herself in her spare time, she provides a gentle, sympathetic view of residents in her town, seeking out simple scenes of beauty in suspended moments of rest or reverie, without concealing the poverty of daily life in post-war Europe. Her works are full of light, making play with shadows and blurred areas, and above all illustrate her committed reconciliation with reality. The exhibition takes a fresh look at her rich and varied output, which goes well beyond the context of Humanist photography alone. This new interpretation of her work is achieved by comparing her personal archives with her own works and those of four contemporary artists Viktoria Binschtok, Paul Graham, Lise Sarfati and Paola Yacoub, who also worked on the theme of the street and the contemporary city. Their approaches are radically different, but echo the photographer s in many ways.

During the war, she worked as an apprentice at the Boissonnas Studio in Geneva, and moved to Paris after the Armistice. She worked for several years with the photographer Willy Maywald, who introduced her to the world of fashion and Paris high society. Shortly afterwards she set up as an independent photographer and was frequently published in the illustrated press, including Paris Match, the New York Times, Life, Picture Post and Die Woche. She published her first photo report at the age of 21 in At 28, she took part in the exhibition «Post-War European Photography» at the MoMA New York and joined the Rapho agency. In 1954, the Art Institute of Chicago devoted a solo exhibition to her, which toured the USA. The following year,, three of her pictures featured in the MOMA s exhibition «The Family of Man». She also worked for the French edition of Vogue throughout the 1950s, producing foreign reports and advertisements for leading communication agencies. At the same time, she devoted herself to more personal work, photographing children playing in the wasteland of her neighbourhood, Porte de Saint-Cloud, as well as Paris and its daily life, Metro, fleamarkets and so on. CATALOGUE Under the guidance of Karolina Ziebinska-Lewandowska A catalogue is being co-published for the occasion by the Centre Pompidou and Xavier Barral. 6 6 3. EXHIBITED CIRCUIT INTRODUCTION Sabine Weiss published her first photoreportage at the age of 21 in Eight years later, she took part in the exhibition "Post-War European Photography" at the New York Museum of Modern Art, and joined the Rapho Agency. In 1954, the Art Institute of Chicago gave her a solo exhibition, which toured the US. The following year,, three of her pictures featured in the MOMA exhibition "The Family of Man" in New York. Weiss is now the last representative of the great "Humanist photography movement. Through this exhibition ranging from 1945 to 1960 a reflection of the confused, precarious post-war years, the Centre Pompidou takes a fresh look at Weiss's photographs. This new interpretation of her work is based on her own archives, and reveals a rich and varied output full of her typical spontaneity. Sabine Weiss's pictures, which come from a donation and a recent acquisition, dialogue with the works of four contemporary artists (Viktoria Binschtok, Paul Graham, Liz Sarfati and Paola Yacoub) who work on the theme of the street and the contemporary city. Their radically different approaches help to cast a new light on the work of the Humanist photographer. CITIES OF MIST AND LIGHT Cities Paris in particular flitter and scintillate through Weiss lens. The photographer wasn t afraid of trembling reflections or blurred outlines, nor of mist dimming the foreground of her images. She indeed embodied the Humanist photography movement, but part of her formal approach was also characteristic of subjective photography. In her photographic wanderings throughout the city, Weiss freed herself of technical constraints and produced surprising images where the din of the city seems to fade away. These unconstrained times in a tranquil Paris, camera in hand, were calm and tender moments. THE LIFE OF CITIES Sabine Weiss photographed Paris, her adopted city, for nearly twenty years. She approached its residents with a natural humility and an intuition for scenes of the ordinary and day-to-day. She loved the sounds and colours of urban life, and took pleasure in crisscrossing suburban wastelands full of mischievous children at play. The human being was central to her photographs, which never judged, analyzed, or criticized. This personal work was almost entirely devoted to the everyday lives of people from every background, in their local streets. MOSCOW Sabine Weiss went to Moscow in 1961 to photograph Les Ballets Russes. This was the period of Nikita Krushchev, when the Cold War was at its height and Stalin s terror far behind. Weiss assignment, a commission from Vogue magazine, had nothing political about it. During the day, she wandered through the city and by chance came upon a national celebration. Here she photographed the parades typical of totalitarian regimes, staged to demonstrate the people s unity; she was also keen to show scenes of dispassionate observers on the fringes of these celebrations.

7 7 NEW YORK Sabine Weiss regularly visited New York with her American husband, Hugh Weiss. There, she rapidly made professional contacts and her work was acclaimed by the press and various institutions. On two trips, in and 1962, she took a large number of photographs of the city, first for herself, and then for a commission from the New York Times Magazine. A long way from her gentle Paris scenes, these pictures vibrate with speed and life, conveying the city s manic energy. New York s fast pace required a different eye. SEQUENCES Sabine Weiss archives contain several scenes captured in sequence. These series of photographs feature minor details, like the scene at the racecourse, or take a close-up look at her subject, like the series of children in the wasteland. This approach, simultaneously spontaneous and methodical, was adopted in different ways by various contemporary artists. TEXTS DEVELOPED IN RELATION WITH OTHER ARTISTS ON DISPLAY "Men and sometimes children carry bunches of red roses in the streets of Beirut [ ]. With these flowers they introduce unusual ornaments to the streets of Beirut. But nobody speaks to them, nor do they buy their flowers. And yet, every morning, they return to the same place with bunches of red roses. In fact, in 2002, everyone feared these florists because they were strongly suspected of being members of the Syrian secret services." Paula Yacoub talking about her series «Les fleurs de Damas» I ve been traveling around the States for a while now, and wanted to do something looser and freer, to take pictures of people at the most ordinary, everyday moments - cutting the grass or waiting for the bus, smoking cigarettes or traveling to and from the supermarket. For his series "A Shimmer of Possibilities", Paul Graham developed a form of sequential narrative linking the fixed image of photography with a cinematographic vision. The banality of everyday life is transformed into something symptomatic of the social condition. In World of Details, I connect the two: the digital image world with reality as I found it in the streets of New York. (.) I first travelled to New York virtually and picked out certain street scenes from the gigantic Google Street View Archive. I was interested in the pedestrians who were photographed by chance, who looked into the lens of an apparatus that then took their picture. (.) In a second step, I travelled physically to the locations I had selected with my reference photographs, to make a further image for myself in the real world. I wanted to find out what I might newly discover in the scenes I knew from the media pictures. (.)" Viktoria Binschtok talking about her series "Worlds of Details". "I worked on distance to create an ambiguous view of a man's relationship with the landscape. My photographs are large format; through their balance, they give the observer an extreme freedom: that of focusing on the landscape or the human figure." Talking about "Oh Man", a series of 17 photographs taken in Los Angeles in 2012 and 2013, Lise Sarfati reveals her metaphorical vision of the urban space.

Based firmly in the observable world and never staged, Graham s photographs of everyday people, places, and events challenge the viewer to ponder the human condition, as well as the language of the medium itself. Graham s photography has been the focus of numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. Recent exhibitions include a shimmer of possibility at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2009) and a mid-career retrospective, Paul Graham: Photographs , originating at the Folkwang Museum, Essen (2009) and travelling to the Deichtorhallen, Hamburg ( ) and Whitechapel Gallery, London (2011). Graham is the recipient of the 2009 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, which included an exhibition at The Photographer s Gallery, London that same year. LISE SARFATI Lise Sarfati, French artist, born in Oran in 1958, has lived between Paris and the United States since She has produced various series set in the American context. After The New Life, SHE and On Hollywood, his work finds a new intensity in the densely built landscape of the city. Tension balances, the complex play of the bodies in the light: in Oh Man, a series created in Los Angeles where she has lived essentially since 2012, the eye follows the man alone, fixes his movement, delicate translation, free choreography, empty grace. The sensitive spectrum finds its strength in intense formal deprivation. Ascetic dilation that also inhabits the compositions, as if heated to be rid of anecdotal slag. Her work has included numerous collections including MoMA S.F., LACMA, Pier 24, De Young Museum, Brooklyn Museum and Centre Pompidou.

16 16 DONOVAN WYLIE Donovan Wylie was born in 1971 in Belfast. As a young photographer, he embarked on a journey through Ireland at the age of 16, which gave rise to a documentary photographic work that led to his first book. Part of his work will be devoted to the political and social landscape of Northern Ireland. In the 90's he collaborated with Magnum and became a member in In his reports, he is interested in the social and political signs revealed by the architecture of places. The Estonia series is an exception to his photographic documentary work, which has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in parallel with the publication of several books and the making of films. PAOLA YACOUB Born in 1966, Beirut, Lebanon Paola Yacoub is a Lebanese artist based in Berlin and Beirut. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Beirut and graduated from the Architectural Association in London in From 1995 to 1999, she worked at the Institut Français d Archéologie du Proche-Orient where she was in charge of the excavation s drawings in downtown Beirut. In 2000 she began to collaborate with French artist Michel Lasserre, noting the variations of aspects of Lebanese territories in war and post-war situations through photographic and performative works. Paola Yacoub and Michel Lasserre exhibited their work at the 2001 and 2003 Venice Biennales, Kunst-Werke Berlin 2000, Witte de With Rotterdam 2003, among others.
