Happy Birthday to all those celebrating their birthdays in April! - Time and Tide wait for no man, but time always stands still for a woman of thirty. - Like many women my age, I am 28 years old. - There is still no cure for the common birthday.
2 From Your Boyle County Homemaker President Our calendar of events seems so crowded this year; I hardly know where to begin. First, we have lost one of our money-making activities The Chili Supper usually held in January or February. The bank that has sponsored it has been sold, and the new bank has declined to pick it up. For this reason, I am asking every member to rack their brains and come up with ideas to remedy this problem. No matter what ideas you may have call your president or me and we will work together. I know we will be able to arrive at a workable solution to our problem. Getting back to the busy calendar, I have learned there are reasons for the changes in dates of major events we are involved in. The state Homemaker convention is earlier this year and the Boyle County Fair is being held the earliest I can remember. These earlier dates have moved our Annual Meeting to April 23 rd. However, the responsible clubs have almost everything in place and it really sounds good to me even if it is a little earlier this year. Hope to see all of you there. Before I forget, I want to express my appreciation for Natasha and her help. She does make my job easier. I am sure all of you will find working with her a pleasant experience as well. I also need to thank all of you for your hard work. You have come through each and every time you were called upon. You know maybe that is the true essence of this organization. We manage to come through with each task. I have certainly witnessed this these last two years Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! Mary Guerrant It s Fair Time Again! Well it s about that time again for the Boyle County Fair which will be beginning May 31 st this year! Homemaker Club Presidents need to fill-out the Night Workers form for Floral Hall that was mailed to you and submit them back to the Extension Office by April 19 th so that we can make sure we have coverage for every night of the fair. If you do not recall which weeknight your club is usually assigned please contact either the Boyle County Extension office or Joyce Zinner for further information. Pull Tabs for Charity Pull Tabs for Charity is a charity organization devoted to raising funds for cancer research, Ronald McDonald Charities worldwide, and the Home-Away-From Home programs. Net proceeds from this organization are also donated to the National Cancer Institute. Starting in the month of April, we will have an opportunity to be part of this exciting program. This will be an on-going project for our county. The second week of April, each Homemaker club receive a small canister to keep your pop can tabs in. When your containers are full, please bring them to the Extension office to deposit them in the large container we will have here designated for that purpose. Once we have a sufficient amount of tabs we will take them to one of the designated recycling centers in Lexington. For more information on this program please visit the pull tabs for charity website: Our skin protects the body against heat and light, injury, and infection. It also helps regulate body temperature, stores water and fats, and produces Vitamin D. The skin is the largest organ of the body and is made up of two layers, the dermis or inner layer and the epidermis or the outer layer. Skin cancers evolve due to abnormal changes in the cells found in the outer layer of the skin. There are several types of cancer involving specific cells found in the epidermis: non-melanoma (basal and squamos cells) and melanoma (melanocytes). The most serious type is melanoma. Melanoma is associated with infrequent but excessive sunbathing resulting in a sunburn. It is caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation either from the sun or tanning beds.
3 Who Gets Skin Cancer? Skin cancer is more common in people with light colored skin who have spent a lot of time in the sun. Fair skinned people are most susceptible because they are born with the least amount of protecting melanin. Redheads, blue-eyed blonds, and people with pigment disorders such as albinism are at the greatest risk. People with many freckles or moles may also be vulnerable to skin cancer, especially if the moles or freckles look abnormal. Skin cancer is about three times more common in men than in women, and the risk increases with age. Most people diagnosed with skin cancer are between 40 and 60 years of age, although forms of the disease are appearing in much younger people. Be sure to remember that everyone, including people with very brown skin, can get sunburned if they don t take proper precautions. Risk Factors It is estimated that 1 out of 7 people in the U.S. will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime. **One serious sunburn can increase your risk by as much as 50% Do you have any of these risk factors? Do you sunbathe and/or use tanning booths? Are you fair skinned with blond or red hair? Did you have a severe sunburn as a child? Do you sunburn easily or have many freckles? Do you have a family history of skin cancer? Prevention: What can I Do? Stay out of the sun, especially between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Wear a broad brimmed hat, a shirt, and sunglasses when out in the sun Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, and reapply it often. Do not use tanning beds or sunlamps. Protect young children from excessive sun exposure. Check your skin regularly for abnormal or changing areas, especially moles, and have them examined by your doctor. Skin Cancer Checkups See your doctor for a skin exam: -Every 3 years if you are years old. -Every year if you are age 40 or over. -Immediately if you have noticed any changes in your skin, moles, or freckles. Perform a monthly self exam: -Become familiar with any moles, freckles or other abnormalities on your skin. -Use a mirror to check areas you can t see Source: Vivian Lasley-Bibbs, MPH, State Health Specialist Cooperative Extension Program, Kentucky State University Spring into Cleaning Great Cleaning Tips When you dust, start at the top and work down. Take all your cleaning tools, avoid unnecessary trips back and forth. Clean as you go! It takes a lot less time to remove new dirt than old. Leave baking soda on carpeting over night will absorb musty odors. Make a checklist of chores to get organized first. Wash walls from the bottom up, to avoid streaking. Use old socks as mitts for cleaning wood work. Wash small knickknacks instead of dusting. To remove heel marks, take pencil eraser and rub them off. Don t mix cleaning products. Ammonia and bleach are toxic. Remember common cleaners such as windex and comet meet this don t do rule. Allowing cleaners to set for several minutes will ease the cleaning job. More Handy Hints Sealed envelope-put in the freezer for a few hours, then slide a knife under the flap. The envelope can then be resealed. Use empty toilet paper roll to store appliance cords. It keeps them neat and you can write on the roll to what appliance it belongs.
4 Crayon marks on walls? This worked wonderfully! A damp rag, dipped in baking soda. Comes off with little effort! To remove permanent marker on appliances and counter tops (like store receipt BLUE) use rubbing alcohol on paper towel. To clean artificial flowers, pour some salt into a paper bag and add the flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt and leave your artificial flowers looking like new! Works like a charm! Spray your TUPPERWARE with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato based sauces and there won t be any stains. Have a wonderful April! Natasha Saunders Boyle County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences Fresh Tomato & Asparagus Frittata ½ pound fresh asparagus spears, trimmed 6 eggs ¼ cup butter 8 slices (2/3 cup) bacon, cooked, crumbled 1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms 1 small tomato, sliced ½ cup chopped onion 4 ounces (1 cup), shredded cheddar cheese Place asparagus spears in nonstick 10-inch skillet; add enough water to cover. Bring to a full boil. Cook over medium heat until crisply tender (5 to 7 minutes). Drain; transfer asparagus to small plate. Melt butter in same skillet until sizzling. Add mushrooms and onion; cook over medium heat until tender (3 to 4 minutes). Beat eggs in medium bowl until frothy; stir in bacon. Pour into skillet. Stir gently over medium heat to cook evenly on bottom (3 to 4 minutes). As egg mixture sets, lift edges with spatula to allow uncooked egg to flow underneath. Arrange tomato slices and asparagus on top. Cover; continue cooking until eggs are set (4 to 5 minutes). Sprinkle with cheese; cut into wedges. Recipe Tip Any combination of cooked broccoli, green bell pepper, red bell pepper, carrot, zucchini or summer squash can be substituted for tomato or asparagus.
