Of course, this time of the year and season is about giving thanks but many of us find our thoughts filled with the busy months ahead. Holidays are fun and exciting opportunities to reconnect with family and friends, but they can also be accompanied with stressful planning, budgets, travel, and, of course, self-consciousness about our appearance. Accordingly, we ve included in this edition of SkinMatters plenty of ideas: from keeping that elusive holiday weight gain in check, a non-surgical way to reduce the fat under your chin, and as always a reminder to wear sunscreen no matter the season! We ve also included a delicious recipe that takes a different spin on your traditional turkey dishes. Here s to making the most of coming holidays! 2 Jeffrey Sassmannshausen, MD For most of us, our beauty routines change and shift with the seasons. While summer is a time for lightweight lotions and humidity-taming hair products, cooler months call for body butters and moisturizing masks. One thing that has a perpetual spot in our routines, however, is sun protection. If you had to choose just one, the best skincare product you can use on a daily basis is sunscreen. It is a simple truth, that once the temps drop, what should be the most important step in our skin care regimen is easily forgotten. The top layer of skin is the epidermis which serves as protection against harmful environmental elements. This layer gives our skin color when the melanocytes are exposed to UV radiation. The response to the damage from the radiation is making more pigment in an effort to protect the deeper layers of the skin. The body normally has the ability to repair minor damage, but with excessive or intense UV exposure, permanent damage may occur. The older we are, the accumulation of UV radiation exposure increases; therefore, our risk of melanoma increases. But younger people beware: melanoma is the leading cause of cancer death in women age 20 to 29. If there is a family history of melanoma, the risk for developing it at an even younger age increases. Melanoma can occur anywhere on the skin. For men, they are often found on the chest or back. For women, it is the legs. When standing or sitting in the sun, people often turn their backs toward the sun to keep it from shining in their faces, which may explain why the back and backs of the legs are prevalent trouble spots. That risk does not just stop when summer ends. Just because you keep your skin covered with layers of sweaters and your hair hidden under a hat does not mean you do not need to protect your hair and skin from the elements. Any exposed skin during the colder months should always be protected and taken care of year-round. If you were to remember one thing, use sun protection no matter the season! It is the best thing you can do to protect your future self from hearing those dreaded words, You have skin cancer!
3 The holiday season is challenging for everyone! Staying on track with healthy eating choices can seem like an impossible task, especially during this time of year. But excess pounds don't just disappear once January rolls around and you don t want to start the new year with having to lose weight, do you? Well, you don t have to! Follow these eight tips to keep your weight down while enjoying tasty holiday treats this season: 1. Weigh Yourself Twice Per Week That's often enough for you to make sure you re staying on track, but not too often that you take all the joy out of sampling your favorite holiday treats. Step on the scale first thing in the morning, when your stomach is empty. 2. Get Your Groove On In The A.M. Morning exercise can help ensure that you stick to better eating habits throughout the day. Studies show that when a person works out in the a.m., they not only move more for the rest of the day, but they re also less tempted to eat high-calorie foods. 3. Be Very Selective Wherever you may be, make note of everything that is being offered first before you load your plate with foods you normally wouldn t choose. Picking only the food items you truly want and having them in moderation will help you feel more satisfied, and you ll be less likely to give in to late night cravings. 4. Fit Your Workouts In If you can't get to your favorite yoga class or find time for the treadmill, fit in a few minutes of exercise any way you can. Just minutes of jumping rope or dancing each day can help you maintain your fitness level as well as enable you to stay limber. 5. Keep That Sweet Tooth In Check Practice the 3 Bite Rule to satiate your palate and keep calories at bay; you ll experience that first delicious taste which is amazing, the satisfying middle bite and then a lingering third taste. 6. Take Your Time We know, it's hard to do this when you re hungry and the food tastes delicious. But chewing your food slowly gives your brain time to receive the message from your digestive system that you ve had enough to eat. 7. Limit Alcohol Consumption It s easy to get carried away with drinking when you re in a fun and festive environment, but limiting yourself to three alcoholic beverages for the entire evening will save you hundreds of calories. 8. Check With A Wellness Professional You ll be provided with great tips to stay fit this season!
4 Get Rid Of Your Double Chin Without Surgery! Do you feel embarrassed about your double chin? Did you know that there s an FDA-approved treatment for it that doesn t include surgery? Whether you have a moderate amount of fat under your chin or a bit more, Kybella can help. Kybella was approved by the FDA two years ago and is specifically targeted at removing submental fat. Allergan, the company that produces Kybella, states that 79 percent of patients who have this treatment are very satisfied with the results 12 weeks after their final treatment. How Is Kybella Administered? Kybella is injected into the area beneath the chin and is specifically tailored to each patient s individual needs to destroy submental fat cells. Deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient that is identical to the deoxycholic acid in our bodies which breaks down dietary fat. It s administered as a series of injections, and that total number depends on how much submental fat there is to treat. A patient will need up to six treatments that are spaced out 6 weeks apart. In clinical studies, 59 percent of patients received an average of six treatments of Kybella. Is Kybella Safe? The most common side effects of the treatment include temporary swelling, bruising, numbness, pain, redness and hard areas forming in the treatment area. When doing your research, it s always important to remember that price isn t always the most important you get what you pay for. Not all injectors are the same, so it is also important to go to an experienced, licensed health care professional. More than 20 clinical studies on Kybella have been conducted and over 1,600 people have been treated with Kybella in those studies. You re born with a certain number of fat cells underneath your chin - and once Kybella destroys some of them, they are gone and can no longer store or accumulate fat. 5 Without regular attention, dry skin can lead to cracking and bleeding. Taking hot baths/showers and using harsh cleansers exacerbate dry skin. Keep skin looking youthful and smooth by reducing (and eliminating) chapped and itchy skin with these suggestions: Washing your skin with lukewarm water with the proper cleanser helps to avoid stripping essential oils from your skin that it needs to stay soft and supple. Moisturizing immediately after your shower or bath (while your skin is still damp) helps to seal that dampness into your skin. Choosing the correct moisturizer will soothe your dry, itchy skin while helping it to retain more moisture. Check with Dr. Sassmannshausen or one of our skin care specialists for recommendations. Protecting your skin from the elements will help keep your skin soft and smooth while preventing chapping and flaking. Drinking more water and eating foods with high water content provides your skin with much-needed hydration from the inside out. Exfoliating your face and body regularly helps to slough off dead skin cells so moisture can penetrate the epidermis more effectively. Using an effective sunscreen with a high SPF this time of year is important due to the sun s rays being just as harsh as it is during the summer months. 7 INGREDIENTS: 2 large green peppers, tops and seeds removed. 1/2 pound ground turkey 1 small onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, minced 2 tablespoons butter Turkey Stuffed Peppers Yield: 2 servings Recipe found on tasteofhome.com This holiday season, try a different spin on traditional turkey dishes with this hearty and tasty recipe! Not all stuffed peppers have ground beef and tomato sauce. Ground turkey and a white sauce give this variation wonderful down-home flavor and appeal. Enjoy these delicious Turkey Stuffed Peppers and savor every bite! 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup chopped tomato 4 tablespoons shredded cheddar cheese Directions: STEP 1 In a large saucepan, cook peppers in boiling water for 3 minutes. Drain and rinse with cold water; set aside. STEP 2 In a skillet, cook the turkey, onion and garlic over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain and set aside. STEP 3 In the same skillet, melt butter. STEP 4 Stir in the flour, salt and pepper until smooth. STEP 5 Gradually add milk, and bring to a boil; cook and stir for 1-2 minutes or until thickened. STEP 6 Return turkey mixture to skillet and stir in tomato and 2 tablespoons of cheese; heat through. STEP 7 Spoon into peppers and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. STEP 8 Place in a greased 1-qt baking dish, cover and bake at 350 degrees for minutes or until peppers are tender and filling is hot. NUTRITION INFORMATION Serving Size: 1 pepper Per Serving: 499 calories, 35 grams of fat (17 grams of saturated fat), 131 mg cholesterol, 946 mg sodium, 24 grams carbohydrate, 10 grams sugars, 4 grams fiber, 26 grams protein

9 Three Rivers Dermatology & Windy Ridge Skin Care Centre offers a variety of skin care products so that each individual skincare need can be met. We thought it would be fun to ask our team to share their favorite product with us and why they love it! Michelle has been with Three Rivers Dermatology since March of 2014 and is the Reception and Reservation Team Leader. She graduated from IPFW with a Bachelor s Degree in Organization, Leadership, & Supervision (OLS) with a concentration in Health Services. Outside of work she enjoys going shopping, working out and spending time with her family, friends and puppy. I am a little obsessed with lip plumpers already and when SkinMedica switched their Lip Plump System to include ingredients from my other favorite product (HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator), I was pumped! This is now, obviously one of my new favorite products. Ever since I started using it, I have noticed I need chapstick less often throughout the day because the first step includes HA5, which gives me hydration all day long.
