2 ashion Beauty & WHAT S After a toasty warm summer, October came as a bit of a shock to the system. It seems that autumn in Beijing does indeed last a mere three days. And while we re not juggling sub-zero temperatures just yet, a wardrobe overhaul is still in order. We ve been spending increasing amounts of time up in Sanlitun recently. Not only because of The Village which boasts some of the funkiest stores in town but the newly established Nali Patio is also rather exciting, and is fast becoming one of my favorite shopping destinations in Beijing. Admittedly, the layout is terribly confusing. It took a good 30 minutes of wandering around aimlessly before finally locating the Nicolas Favard jewelry store. It s definitely worth seeking out, though, as they stock some rather thrilling pieces. Christmas is but one month away, so for all those who want to surprise me with gifts and goodies, I m rather fond of the meteorite pendant. For more on this talented young jeweler, check out the What s New: Shops review on p123. Another spunky addition to that shopping complex is funky clothing store Loop (2/F, Nali Patio, 81 Sanlitun Beilu, ). Look out for the shocking neon-pink silk skirt (RMB 300), which I would ve snapped up immediately had I been able to get it over my arse. Another treat was the Tsumori Chisato tunic dress. This exciting designer is profiled in Designers We Love, p124. In other news of designers we love, young design talent Xander Zhou continues to thrill the fashion world with the launch of his new Tableau Vivant Fall/Winter 2008 collection. Initial shots of the collection suggest that this new range will be every bit as phenomenally popular as his last one, and Beijing s dapper gents would do well to inquire as soon as they can to avoid disappointment. For Beijing s chic chicks, it s time to limber up and get ready to attack as the Kate Moss for Topshop collection goes on sale at Lane Crawford this month. Drawing lessons from the utter carnage witnessed over at Shin Kong Place s Diesel store during last month s Dirty Thirty jeans launch (more details online at com/blog), I m dusting off my nunchucks... And finally, this may not provoke the same level of hysteria, but Americans will be pleased to hear that electronics chain Best Buy is coming to Beijing. It s rumored that they ll open in the Scitech Plaza s basement, and unless they start selling Dualit toasters for RMB 20, you should be fairly safe checking it out. Halla Mohieddeen MUST HAVE Miu Miu s Alice in Wonderland teacup platform pumps impressed fans last season, and this fall the label has released a quirky new addition to their shoe collection. These multicolored sculptural heels (RMB 3,600) are guaranteed headturners. They re surprisingly easy to wear as well, if you match with neutral-colored clothing. This reputable consignment boutique serves mad bag-lovers on a budget. Selling gently used designer bags and accessories, this new store offers an opportunity to get your hands on limited edition and soldout-everywhere styles. You can also bring in any unwanted bags of your own for a close inspection from the sales associates in store and then use the cash from your trade-in to invest in a new style. Items of note included the Chanel 2.55 Quilted Evening Bag (RMB 19,000), and prices range from the hundreds (Marc Jacobs key chain, RMB 700) to RMB 60,000 for a Birkin. Glam, however, was a fortuitous find. While many of the new boutiques in the Nali mall offer one or two decent items, surrounded by mountains of overpriced tat, almost everything on the racks in Glam is worth picking up, and reasonably priced to boot. Funky colored knits that will appeal to young hipsters are available from RMB 400, while gorgeous little felt trilbies (with a tasteful diamante trim) retail for a mere RMB 50. The selection of shoes and boots caught our eye as well. We haggled fairly hard to get a stunning pair of leather ankle boots for RMB 900, although the black patent Steve Madden set was a slightly cheaper RMB 500. Aside from the trendy clothing and accessories, however, the real draw of this store is the young, friendly staff, who made the experience of shopping at Glam such a treat. This could change with the arrival of Pedder Red. With footwear priced between RMB 1,500 and 3,000, the shoes don t come cheap, but are more affordable than the million-dollar clogs on offer in Jimmy Choo and the like. Pitching firmly at the youngprofessional market, fashion-conscious women have a wealth of winter pumps, ankle and knee-high boots and accessories (from RMB ) to choose from. Chances are you ll see them very soon on the well-shod heels of Beijing s up-and-coming ladies. Fiona Zhang PRODUCT FOCUS Eye Candy The boldest and best eyeshadows for Fall/Winter 2008 Eyes are the windows to the soul, as the old saying goes so what better way to draw people in deeper than by perfecting your eye makeup. The three key looks this fall and winter are silvery tints, brilliant blues, and bronzes and browns. All three color schemes share a sparkly edge. Go for a matte look during the day, but as night falls, let rip with the glitter. Still, always remember the most basic makeup rule: Build up color gradually, to avoid looking like you ve just gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson. Fiona Zhang BeneFit Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow/ Liner RMB 220/4.5g The spunky SanFran brand has relaunched its creaseless cream eyeshadow range, and added many new colors to the line, with the usual intriguing monikers ( busy single, skinny jeans and f latter me ). Silky in texture and easy to apply, these eyeshadows brighten the eyes with a shimmery, but not overpowering, sheen. Shu Uemura Instinct Duo Eyeshadow RMB 350 This new Duo Eyeshadow palette features three cream and powder color combinations: Mesmerizer (violet and sparkling taupe), Mystifier (charcoal and sparkling bronze), and Tantalizer (olive and sparkling copper). While you can simply drop by and pick up whatever takes your fancy, it s generally best to arrange a time to visit when Favard himself is there; he can give you a deeper insight into the fantastic items on display, and help you explore the options of creating your own unique piece. Prices start from RMB 150 for worry stone silver pendants, and items such as the crystal, silver and cloth brooches (RMB 600) are indeed affordable. We were blown away, however, by the meteorite stone pendant (RMB 4,800), and the innovative diamond and watermelon stone earring set (RMB 5,800). Fans of innovation will delight in the clever yin-yang black/ clear diamond ring (RMB 25,000). For the more discreet, the reverse set diamond ring offers a more subtle way of wearing a girl s best friend (RMB 5,400). 4 DESIGNERS WE LOVE Tsumori Chisato ISSEY-SAN HAS GRANTED ME SO MANY PRECIOUS CHANCES. HE TAUGHT ME THE WAY A DESIGNER SHOULD BE by Fiona Zhang Tsumori Chisato decided on a career in the fashion industry at the suggestion of her mother, who saw talent in the outfits that her daughter created for her dolls. Tsumori went on to study at Japan s prestigious Bunka Fashion College; after graduating in 1976, she was discovered by Issey Miyake and named as the head designer of the Issey Sport line. Seven years later, this line was renamed the I.S. Chisato Tsumori Design. In 1990, with the help of Miyake, she founded her own brand: Tsumori Chisato. Her work has twice been awarded the coveted Mainichi Fashion Award in 1985 (Upcoming Designer of the Year) and in 2002 (Best Designer of the Year). In 2003, her menswear line was introduced as part of the brand s first diversification, and her womenswear line was showcased for the first time at Paris Fashion Week, where she quickly won fans from Paris to London and New York. Today, the brand has developed into several sub-lines including the women s readyto-wear collection, men s ready-to-wear line, lingerie, and accessories such as shoes, bags, watches, and fantasy jewelry collections. DESIGN CONCEPT Tsumori s designs are sublime and whimsical, characterized by girly silhouettes, dramatic and bold cuts, color-drenched prints and hand-drawn details. She draws inspiration from nature, with animals, landscapes or the ocean featuring prominently. The fairy tale and bohemian kawaii ( cute ) forms are blended with her avant-garde structural design, an influence from her mentor, Miyake. Uniqueness and excitement are two important factors in Tsumori Chisato s designs, as she focuses on innovation rather than marketing strategy. CATWALK REPORT Tsumori Chisato s Fall/Winter collection demonstrates more of her whimsical girliness, with its prominent winter flowers fantasy theme playing strongly throughout. Mini tunics are embroidered, while the satin dresses and overcoats come adorned with tiers, ruffles and eye-catching flowers. The meticulous tailoring is evident. Her inspiration for these imaginative pieces comes from memories of her childhood drawings of outer space; the layered simple geometric patterns of her knitted tops, dresses, and even leggings feature planetary shapes. Puffy flower petal sleeves cover the arms like wings. Last but not least, Tsumori showcases more prints, her design forte. 6 Black-Jeaned Skaters The skater look usually ranges from grungily trendy to standoffishly brand-obsessed. These fellows, from South Africa and the United States, almost make it seem chic. The tight black jeans, quirky trainers and laissez-faire hair makes up for the ubiquitous Volcom diamond. Succinct and Well-Managed So put-together and yet undone at the same time. Neither overly deliberate nor fashion-chasing at the same time, neither boring nor professional. In Beijing, more subtle and casual styles for adults are rarely done well. She manages femininity without being obnoxiously girly, and bright colors without clashing or garishness. Love the navy (!) vintage leather bag. An Unlikely Hipster This style might work on a man as well. At the same time, she does look rather like a schoolgirl unconcerned about being a hipster, lacking any of the irony that her outfit might imply. Hip she is, though, with super-tapered jeans with stacking, black-rimmed glasses, and the Converses, which I m finally tiring of. FALL ALREADY?! Stylites yearns for the return of warmer climes text and photos by Nels Frye Aubergine Rocker Red Converses have been making the rounds as we tire of black, blue and white. The best part here is the waist-length jacket, actually a vintage piece made in the 126 that smags good old US of A, though the overall effect seems Sept. more 2005 London than www. Motown. thatsbj.com the Beijinger / November 2008 Purple Tones Raised Converses tend to raise eyebrows, but what shoe would have worked with this fun outfit? There is something jesterish about it, but she manages. Here, the billowy cut is on top while the tight fit is on the bottom. This mix only works with women or men with physiques similar to hers. Bright-Eyed and Vested He comes armed with a rugged waistcoat, quite fitting for a college student on safari through the wasteland of Beijing, where a sandstorm or black Audi can hit at any moment. This engineering student eagerly shows he is not constrained by any conformist guidelines of fashion, rejecting status and the tired old pursuit of cool.

7 Sporting Clothes on the Street This is casual with a touch of sportswear done perfectly, but the poise really makes it happen. If you must don athletic trousers and trainers as streetwear, do not wear anything but this (and don t smoke). He s one of the proprietors of a funky shop on Nanluogu Xiang. Spacious Proportions This hairdresser failed to shoot a visual bazooka at us, unlike most of his tacky colleagues. Might not seem like much, but this young Northeasterner is showing us proportions that menswear might increasingly opt for in the future. Many designers and consumers are tired of tight clothes, and formalwear could also begin to go more toward fuller cut trousers. Cute Patterns Hailing from Hong Kong, this student likes to shop in her hometown, but she prefers the cultural environment in Beijing, if not the physical one. Isn t this the kind of young lady you would like to see in a hutong, standing between a light pole and a pipe? Seasons change fast in Beijing and the time has come to don heavy covering to shield us from the parched and unforgiving winds. My preference is for nostalgia. Sometimes, pleasure comes from reminding ourselves of more glamorous times before. Now is a perfect time for sentimentally reminiscing on the fat times before or eating up the last fat that remains before the long winter. Many Beijingers are now already in wool or cotton long-johns and Uggs, but let us feel warm considering the idyll we enjoyed. What could be more appropriate for a hutong dweller than a bottle of Yanjing and a stray cat? A repeat cat rescuer, Mr. Gao is an oil painter who resides on the hutong that flows east from Salud, but he never visits the local bars, preferring a daily dose of our favorite 2.5 kuai beer. Professional Stars These two public relations executives show what us that there is nothing stuffy or square about being a young professional in Beijing today. In all likelihood, they are even more fashion-forward and sexy than their colleagues who work in New York and London. For the gentleman, I would prefer a longer jacket and perhaps the color navy, but black and short are the trendy way to go. Cat King Follower Not only does this young hairdresser look like Elvis, he also comes right out and claims the maowang ( cat king Chinese for Elvis) as his main style inspiration. 8 TROUSER PRESS My first overcoat was one that had been custombuilt for my father in Kabul during WWII. Before I inherited this behemoth, my mother lent it to the dry-cleaning ladies, whose washing made it lose the dust of five decades, shedding half its weight. The monstrous thing remained unpardonably heavy, probably due to its dense English herringbone, which still seems like new. Lugging that stolid coat saved me from the yuppyish gym as it kept the sweat flowing during Chicago s remorseless winters. One would be fortunate to find so grave a mantel in our current age of convenience. Despite that pesky global thaw, we still need coats to wear over suits and sport coats, and men can really shine while stalking about town in a smartly cut overcoat. Coats must be as slim as the man is, and Beijing demands a rugged coat, defiant in the face of the sulphuric air and gawking hordes. The standard choices are gray, charcoal, navy or camel. Keeping in mind that black is only for eveningwear, other choices include the brown family, herringbones of gray or navy, heavy tweeds, and even more lively colors like maroon, green and deep purple. Another hotly debated style point is whether or not camel only works with the darker complexions. If one chooses to have a coat tailor-made, note that our tailors stress workflow and the wools at local markets blend polyester, acrylic and maybe even melamine making the fabrics pill after just three winters. The standard option in Beijing is cashmere blends that sadly contain more than a tincture of poly in all but the priciest of bolts. Any Insist on coats with minimal or no shoulder padding, though the tailor will protest Top Coat Wrapping up in winter is easy, with the right overcoat by Nels Frye cashmeres can be fragile, and overcoats get abused here. Seek sturdier fabrics, meaning woolens from steadfast old Britain. Thicker fabrics seem wise, but bear in mind that the suit jacket worn inside also provides warmth. An overcoat hitting below the knee needs three meters of fabric, but the tailor knows best. Shorter men can appear lengthened by coats hitting above the knee, though some disagree. Either way, coats have been shortening and the elongated peacoat is biggish for 08/ 09. Young women not that we should heed them invariably prefer men in shorter coats. Overcoats fit over suits and your tailor must measure accordingly. The armholes must be large enough to allow a jacket through but not so big that motion is constricted or style is compromised. Insist on coats with minimal or no shoulder padding, though the tailor will protest. Free from the rules governing suits, overcoats are fun. They can be two, three or four buttons, and doubleor single-breasted. They can take all sorts of military influences like epaulettes and oversized collars. Patch pockets, hacking pockets, ticket pockets on both sides, and the more practical pass-through pockets (to allow access to pant and suit pockets) are all kosher. A velvet collar is another option and for the truly decadent, astrakhan and fur collars are not too much. Just as he needs a perfect custom suit, lovely leathersoled shoes, and a defining briefcase, a man needs a bold and steadfast overcoat. One can never be enough, but if parsimonious dudes must pass the winter with a single coat, they would be advised not to stint on it.
