5 it s a summer s day in LA, and InStyle is standing on the Malibu beachfront in California, with Australian model and nascent entrepreneur, Jessica Hart. There s only one hiccup in the plans Hart arrives wearing a moon-boot. And it is not a sartorial statement. Three weeks prior, while in London to attend a pre-wedding dinner for the cousin of her boyfriend, Stavros Niarchos III, Hart sliced her left foot open. Wearing flat sandals at the dinner, she slid into the dimly lit restaurant s banquette, felt a twinge, looked down, and noticed a massive dark puddle around both my feet. Histrionics could have followed, but instead Hart limped quietly over to her beau and calmly pointed out the gash. Cue visits to five hospitals, consultations with myriad doctors, and finally, just as the bride and groom were saying their vows 24 hours later, Hart underwent surgery to repair a sliced nerve. Needless to say, she missed the wedding. Moon-boot notwithstanding, this InStyle shoot went off without a hitch (albeit, with feet out of shot!) testament to the native Melburnian s dedicated professionalism. As Hart, 26, says, her only thought after the injury was of her work: I was devastated because I had so many jobs lined up! Her first negotiations post-surgery were with the doctor to determine just how quickly she could get back in front of the camera. Hart s steady ascent began in 2000, when at 14 she won a local modelling competition. Little more than a year later she left her family behind (mum, Rae, and younger sister, Ashley) to head to Japan to model full-time. She has lived overseas ever since, basing herself in New York from Over the last decade, Hart has become a fixture on the global fashion scene, she has walked for, or sat front row at, the likes of Ferragamo, Christopher Kane, Valentino, and Victoria s Secret. I ve been super lucky, she says in reflection. Of course, alongside the big international jobs, she s also been an ambassador for Myer for two years ( It s a great company. They are like a family. ) and recently became the face of Mambo s new campaign ( An iconic Aussie brand I love supporting Australia. It wasn t a hard decision! ). Modelling, though, isn t the only string in Hart s bow: there s her long-standing Neon Hart fashion range for General Pants Co. (a percentage of profits go to charity); a cool collaboration with US fashion brand Pencey; and she recently designed a Rolex watch for fashion website, Moda Operandi. These aren t things I ve chased, she explains, her Aussie accent layered with a Manhattan twang. But I have developed a love for fashion and designing. These projects tickle my creative side.. Now, she is also developing an Australianmade cosmetics and skincare line. I ve been in the industry 12 years. [The range] is based on my experience, tricks I ve learnt. I want to show how easy it is to look good without having too much make-up on. Less is more. She stays tight-lipped about the line s name and when it will be launched already a savvy businesswoman, she knows she needs to protect exclusive rights, if and when they come about. But as a self-confessed beauty addict, the move into skincare and make-up was a no-brainer and Hart is deeply involved in every aspect of the development: textures, consistencies, SPF formulations, even packaging and design. I ve been working on it for nearly two years now, she says. It s really important [the products] are right. I m not letting any of it past me. This careful control underpins several aspects of Hart s life, from those fashion collaborations through to her Instagram and Twitter feeds. Hart regularly updates her 21,000+ followers with cool outtakes from her life, but is well aware of the potential pitfalls in the world of online publishing. Having a self-filter, she says, is crucial especially for one so naturally vivacious. It s really hard, I want to share everything! I want to share my stupid, crazy side. But I have to monitor it. I never post personal photos, relationship photos. Hart is certainly not one to linger on any details of that relationship online or off. She politely deflects questions about Niarchos, the grandson of a Greek shipping magnate (and an heir to a large family fortune). He and Hart have been together for more than 18 months now, but she remains measured when it comes to details of her romantic life, preferring instead to say, he s a very private person, and, I realise I am quite reserved [like that], too. Her prudence and mindful consideration pop up in other ways, too. Like, the way she packs for travel: I have a system, she says, with a laugh. I put everything on my bed and make it work in colourways. It helps me eliminate things I don t need, and it makes it look like you are changing your outfits all the time, when you really aren t. Then there s her wardrobe management: she has another system in the event of a mistaken purchase. I leave it in my wardrobe with the tag on, to remind myself of how stupid I am! Despite such rigorous organisation, Hart has an infectious enthusiasm for sartorial pleasures, but insists she isn t extravagant. I don t like to spend a lot of money, she says. Instead, Topshop and local New York label, Reformation, are on heavy rotation, as are Country Road T-shirts So good! [They re] cut well so they look oversized, but they aren t. Her weakness is for handbags Balenciaga, Alaïa, and Louis Vuitton have all found their way to the crook of her arm plus there s her collection of Converse. I have 12 pairs, she admits with a laugh. As handy as they might be while recovering from a foot injury, Cons aren t always Hart s go-to choice.
