2 MIND STOKVEL 101 saving belonging to a stokvel group is a great way to save for groceries, funerals, school expenses even a holiday. But what if you could buy a taxi, your own home or start a business with your stokvel savings? One way is to not withdraw all the money, but to invest a portion for a few years. Withdrawing all your funds at the end of the year is like cycling on the same spot you don t get anywhere, says Owen Nkomo of Inkunzi Wealth Group in Sandton. We see more and more stokvels investing as well as saving for yearly goals and expenses, says Busi Skenjana, CEO of BSK Marketing & Associates in Northcliff, Johannesburg. Stokvels are realising they don t have anything tangible to show except some pieces of furniture they have bought or school fees they have paid for, despite having been around for more than twenty years. So, how can you invest as a stokvel? Is it safe to use investment as a means to save, and can you get hold of your money in an emergency? THE UBUNTU WAY A stokvel is a great way of saving towards a common goal. And if your stokvel invests wisely, it could also help secure your future. How much can each member afford to contribute? What is your goal? To go on a group holiday, buy a business, pay for a wedding? How much money will you invest? This will help determine which investment option fits your needs. BEFORE INVESTING, DECIDE AS A GROUP Everyone must commit to this period. Do you want to invest by regular debit order, lump sum or a combination of the two? For example, the group can decide if they want to put together as much as everyone can afford and make a one-time investment, or authorise the bank to take a fixed, smaller amount each month. How long three years, five years, more? Remember that although you have immediate access to your money at any time, the longer you leave it invested, the greater the chance of achieving your investment goal.

Members can use their name or ID as a reference number on deposit slips or debit orders. Ask the treasurer to bring a bank statement of your club account where you can check members contributions. Find out how much the annual investment fee would be for you as a group. STOKVELS You will receive monthly statements that will track your investment. Ask what 6 your options are once your investment has matured (reached the end of the investment period) and tax has been deducted. You can have the money paid directly into your account. To safeguard yourself It s rare but not unheard of for a stokvel member to vanish with the group s money. All members must provide full identity documentation when joining. Draw up a formal constitution for your stokvel. If you don t, you won t be able to lay a charge of theft at a police station because you won t have proof your money was not used for the purpose agreed. Download a stokvel constitution document on nasasa.co.za Visit the bank as a group when withdrawing large amounts. This prevents criminals targeting one person. You can also opt for EFT/debit orders to make your monthly contribution or payouts. and the law Stokvels are not governed by law but you are required to belong to an association approved in writing by the Registrar of Banks. This is because stokvels, like banks, take deposits and manage withdrawals. The National Stokvel Association of South Africa (NASASA) is the only body in the country that works under an exemption so your stokvel can do these transactions under their watch. But if there is more than R in your stokvel s kitty and you don t belong to NASASA, you could go to jail for breaking the Banks Act, NASASA CEO Andile Mazwai warns. Another reason to register is they have regular meetings with stokvel clubs around the country to help increase each stokvel s financial goals and growth. TSHEPO MOLOI, CREATOR OF THE STOKFELLA APP by the book Track your stokvel s finances on your phone with the Stokfella App, the brainchild of 31-year-old Soweto-born Tshepo Moloi. It allows you to create a group with a chairman, secretary and treasurer, just like you would in a real-life stokvel but via your phone. Any transaction done on the app gets approved by the chairman or the treasurer. It is available through Google Play and the itunes App store.?what are unit trusts? You can either make money or lose money by investing it in a unit trust. You can choose a high-, medium- or low-risk investment. Different people have different needs, which help determine their willingness to take risks, explains Owen Nkomo. For example, once we do the assessment and find you re a low-risk client, we invest in a portfolio with bonds and the money market, with limited risk. Speak to a consultant and decide as a group which option you re comfortable with. 15
