2 Unit 3-2: Textile Hanging Procedures (Handout 3-a) I. Grading Clothing A. You will begin by sorting through gaylords of donated clothing. You are looking for items of good quality that will be sold on sales floor. Items of poor quality (rips, stains, broken buttons, lint balls, zipper broke, wash worn, and faded items) will be placed into a bin marked salvage. Special mention should be made to seasonal items. During summer a bathing suit of average quality may be able to sell however during winter months this same bathing suit will not. Summer clothing should only be put out in winter if it is of excellent quality. Winter clothing in summer should be treated the same way. Otherwise, out of season clothing should be recycled. See Brand Name Handout and work instructions. B. Key areas to check that make clothing not saleable: 1. Shirts and Blouses: Check for armpit stains, lint balls, missing buttons and collar stains. 2. Pants: Check for non-working zipper, stains, ripped crotch, knee stains, and lint balls. 3. Sweaters: Check for picks or pulls in the yarn, dirty cuffs and lint balls. 4. Dresses / Skirts: Check for dry rotted elastic, hem unraveling, stained armpits. 5. Home Fashions: Check for soiled fabric, holes, stains, unraveling hems, faded material, and dry rotted elastic. C. Each store manager along their supervisor will decide the most appropriate textile production method based upon store layout and the skills and abilities of the staff. As a general rule, the following should be achieved depending on position: 1. Sorting only- One and one half plastic Gaylords per hour 2. Sorting/Tagging and Hanging- One hundred pieces hung per hour See Appendix of Attachments: 3A-1 Textile Grading Standards II. Tagging Procedures A. Each piece of clothing will be tagged with a colored plastic tab called a barb. We use a different colored barb each week (Sunday thru Saturday). There are five different colors- clear, red, black, blue, and green. One week prior to a color coming into cycle we will pull all of the clothing on the sales floor having that same colored barb. No clothing should be out on the sales floor for more than 4 weeks. Goodwill has found that if these items have not sold during the 4-5-week cycle there may be something undesirable about them. All pulled clothing will be placed into a Gaylord marked Pulled. This merchandise will either be baled at select locations or sent to an Outlet to sell by the pound or piece depending on the location. Check with your Store Manager to understand the correct process for your location. B. Tag all upper body garments such as: shirts, dresses, and coats in the label at back of the neck or at the seam if there is no label. Barbs should never be pierced through the material. If a tag is not available, place the barb through the thick lining or inseam where the label should be. Placing the barbs through the material will damage the garment. The garment should always be placed on the hanger with the front of the garment facing to your left. This allows the barb to be seen easily on rack.

3 C. Tag all lower body garments such as pants, skirts, and shorts on the left side T-seam (as you wear the garment) at the waistband. The barb should always be placed in the inseam of the garment. Barbs should never be pierced through the material. Placing the barbs through the material will damage the garment. The garment should always be placed on the hanger with the front of the garment facing to your left. This allows the barb to be seen easily on the rack. D. Home Fashions: All of these items will be individually barbed with the current week s color. The barb should always be placed in the inseam of the garment. Barbs should never be pierced through the material. Placing the barbs through the material will damage the garment. Place the item on the appropriate hanger then place the color barb into a seam on the left-facing side of the item so the tag will be easily found. Some Home Fashion piece may be displayed on the sales floor in dump bins. If these items are merchandised in dump bins, hangers are not needed and item should be placed into a cart to go onto the sales floor. Check with your Store Manager to understand the proper process for your location. E. Special Find Items: You may come across items that deserve a higher price due to superior quality or name brand. All of these items will need to be individually priced with a white price tag and barbed with the current week s color. Place a black X in the label of the item to indicate to cashier that this is a special priced garment. This will prevent us losing money if the tag comes off. The manager should monitor this "Special Find" pricing to ensure overall accuracy and consistency. At times the Store Manager may instruct you to save pieces that are designated for Shop Goodwill. These should be a minimal amount of product. Special Finds should equate to no more than 2% of what is hung. F. Each sorting and tagging station is provided with a Store Production Log (similar to Appendix of Attachments 3A-2). Number of pieces tagged should be logged per hour. This can be easily tracked by counting the completed barb tact s. Each barbing units have 50 barbs attached. G. Production goal for a tagger is different depending on the positions. Use the following guidelines to determine production goal: 1. Tagger: Barb 300 pieces per hour (6 barbing units) 2. Tag/Sort and Hanger: Barb, Sort and Hang 100 pieces hung per hour

4 III. IV. Hanging Procedures A. All upper body garments will use a shirt style hanger; all lower body garments will use a pants style hanger. Ladies 2 piece outfits will use both a shirt and pant hanger (pant hanger will attach and hang onto shirt hanger). Men s suits, jackets, and home fashions will use a heavy weight hanger. This hanger is designed to open at the bottom allowing the men s pants to slide into the hanger at the knees. This also allows the home fashion/domestic items to fit secure so not to fall off the hanger. B. Sometimes garments are donated after they are washed and come to us "inside out." Be sure to hang all garments "right side out." When placing shirts onto hangers, button the top button to help prevent shirt from falling off. If the garment has a zippered front, zip fully. C. Home fashions need to be folded so that they will fit easily onto the heavy weight hangers. You will need to fold these items so that they hang long but have a narrow width to be placed onto the heavy weight hanger. D. Hang each garment within its own category on the Z-rack. This will help in placing items onto the sales floor in a timely manner. Garments should be separated by the following categories: Women s Men s Children s Unisex (T-shirts, Coats) Home Fashion E. Each hanging station is provided with a Store Production Log (see Appendix of Attachments 3A-2). When your Z-rack is full, you will count the number of items on the rack, enter that number on the Log and initial your entry. A member of management will spot check racks for quality and quantity. F. Z-racks should be staged inside the production doors. Manager on duty will review all racks for quality before placing on the sales. All racks that are hung during a business day should be placed on the sales floor before the end of the business day. Racks should never be held in the back room for future dispersing. All product should go onto the sales floor as quickly as possible once hung and verified for quality. G. Manager on Duty will verify all racks for quality. If any pieces do not meet quality expectations, the piece will be removed from rack and replaced with a new garment that meets quality expectations. Home Fashions Pricing Procedure A. As with all graded items, quality is the key to your success. Don t hang items that are dirty, wash worn or missing major pieces (example: only one side to a 2 piece curtain). B. Review pricing structure for home fashions (see Appendix of Attachments 3A-4 Pricing Guidelines). There are some items that are standard priced and other that have simple pricing guides. The standard priced items will always be that price (i.e. sheets are $2.99 ea.). You may get a high quality item that is worth more than the standard price. You may mark those items higher than the standard price, however you may never mark those items lower than the standard price. If you feel the item is not worth the standard price then it is not of the acceptable quality level to sell. Home fashions not standard priced should be listed in the Pricing Guidelines attachment. If you price an item higher than the standard price it must be priced at least twice that of the standard price. C. Smaller home fashions should not be hung. Instead, these smaller items should be placed into a dump bin on the sales floor (items such as place mats, napkins, towels, wash cloths, pot holders, etc.)

5 V. Miscellaneous A. Size 0-24 month infant clothes should not be tagged or hung. Conduct a quality inspection of each garment as per guidelines above and place infant clothes into a dump bin on sales floor. B. Used underwear bottoms are not to be sold at all. C. Saleable socks should be paired up and put into a dump bin on the sales floor. You will not need to price these items, as they are a standard price item. D. Do not put pillows, hangers or anything else other than clothing into Recycle gaylords Anything other than clothing may result in an employee accident when the gaylord is unloaded for final processing. The recycled clothing will be placed into a baling machine that will compact the clothing for easier resale.

6 Unit 3-3: Textile Grading Standards Recycle The textile items that are not fit to be sold are called recycle textiles. These items should be placed into a Gaylord s marked Recycle and the store number along with a date. Nothing but textile items should be placed into these Gaylord s. Textile items that are pulled weekly due to color rotation are also placed into pulled textile Gaylord s labeled Pulls. Any items that are wet, mildewed or soiled more than 65% should be thrown away. Leaving these items in with the other garments will create the same problem throughout the container. Reject and recycle any clothing item that is found to have any of the following defects (not an allinclusive list use your best judgment): HOLES OR TEARS HEAVY SOIL OR STAINS SEAM BREAKS SNAGGED MATERIAL FADED COLOR/PRINT BROKEN OR MISSING FASTENERS STRETCHED ELASTIC LOCAL SPORTING GROUPS, SCHOOL NAMES OR CHURCH GROUPS OBSCENE PRINTING LOW QUALITY BRAND NAMES (REFER TO BRAND NAME LIST) At Goodwill, sorting clothing is one of the most important jobs in the retail store. Not only do you need to work with speed, you must be able to determine the following criteria before an item of clothing is placed onto our sales floor: Fabric: Is the fabric fresh with little or no wear? Pilling is the word used to describe the little balls that develop on some fabrics. It usually occurs whenever the man-made fibers (polyester) detach from the natural fibers (cotton) in the threads of the fabric. Another thing to look for in the fabric is the overall texture. Does the fabric feel good, or is it very limp and thin? Very worn fabric will become threadbare indicating that the life of the garment has been used up. Color: The color of the fabric should be clear and bright. While some items such as denim jeans are washed before manufacturing, other types of fabric can show signs of aging by the amount of fading they present. This occurs due to many washings, and some fabrics are better at holding their color than others. For instance, Rayon looks and feels just like cotton, but with the added advantage of being very colorfast. The colors will remain bright for much longer.

7 Wear: Many clothing items cannot be used simply because they are worn out. Look at the collar and cuffs of shirts. Look at the hems of pants, as well as the seat. But be careful! Denim jeans are a staple of most wardrobes today and some styles are intentionally processed so that they look worn. Men s jeans, especially Levis, can be sold in almost any condition. Overall quality: Look for missing buttons and make sure the zipper works. Be on the lookout for out-of-date items. While men s polyester leisure suits may be in excellent condition, most will be over 25 years old! We do not want that type of item on our sales floor. Look for double-knit polyester, both men s and women s. That, too, will be over 25 years old. Please remember there is a difference between out of style and vintage clothing. Season: In our business, except for exceptional items and expensive brand names, it is important to recognize the selling season for clothing. In November, our customers are buying primarily winter clothing. In the sorting process, you have to realize that in November, ordinary sweaters and coats will sell very well, while shorts and swimwear will only sell if it is in new or near-new condition. Likewise in March, our customers are looking for warm-weather clothing. At that time, ordinary shorts, swimwear and lightweight clothing sell very well, while coats and sweaters must be of exceptional quality to sell. Brands to send to Boutique: Consumers are very brand conscious. At Goodwill you should be too! A very nice, new shirt from Wal-Mart will stay on the rack and not sell, while an ordinary shirt from Tommy Hilfiger will sell the same day you put it out. The original cost is a factor as well as the perceived value the customer is looking for. Many of our customers are looking for items to re-sell and they are very brand savvy. On the next pages, you will find some brand names we have identified as exceptional and some that are ordinary. Please remember, that brand names represent perceived value. Review the list and familiarize yourself with the most prestigious brand names that should be sent to your area Goodwill boutique.

8 Unidad 3-3: clasificación textil En goodwill, separando ropa es uno de los trabajos mas importantes en la tienda. No es solamente necesario trabajar con velocidad, pero tambien uno debera poder determinar los criterios siguiente antes de que la ropa llegue al piso. Tela Esta la tela de la ropa en buenas condiciones o nueva? Pilling es la palabra que se usa para describir las bolitas pequenas que se forman en siertas telas. Normalmente ocurre cuando las fibras hechas de hombre(reconocido como polyester ) se separan de las fibras naturales (reconocido como Cotton ) en los hilos de la tela. La textura entera es otra cosa que uno debera estar pendiente cuando examinen la ropa. Se sienta la ropa bien o se siente muy acabada? Estas son unas de las preguntas que uno se debe preguntar cuando esten separando la ropa. Color El color de la ropa debera estar clara y vibrante. Mientras sierta ropa como los pantalones de mezclilla se lavan antes de manifacturarse, otros typos de ropa pierden la textura y el color cuando se lavan. Tambien sierta ropa son mejor en obteniendo los colores originales sin embargo las lavadas. Por ejemplo el material rayon se mira y se siente como cotton (material algodon), pero con la ventaja que no se destine. El material se mantiene su color original por mucho tiempo. Desgaste de Tela Mucha ropa no se puede vender simplemente por estar muy usada. Porfavor ponga mucha atencion al cuello y las mangas de las camisas/blusas. Porfavor examinen las dobladillas de los pantalones. Tengan cuidado! Varios pantalones de mezclilla en estos tiempos intencionalmente se miran descoloridos o se miran como si se an lavado excesivamente. Los pantalones de mezclilla de hombre especialmente la marca Levis se pueden vender basicamente en cualquier condicion. Calidad Examinen por las faltas de botones, tambien assegurensen que los sierres funcionen. Aunque siertos trajes de hombre de polyster esten en condiciones excelentes la mayoria son de 25 anos viejos. No queremos ese typo de ropa para vender. Examinen por doble bastilla en la ropa de hombre y mujer porque por lo normal ese tipo de ropa son de 25 anos viejo. Porfavor recuerde la diferencia de fuera de moda y ropa de epoca (vintage). Temporadas En nuestro negocio, por excepcion de productos excepcionales y la ropa de marca prestigiosa, es importante de reconozer las temporadas de ventas de ropa. En Noviembre, nuestros clientes hacen compras de ropa de invierno. En el proceso de separacion de ropa, tienen que reconozer que en Noviembre ordinariamente los sueteres y las chaquetass se venden muy bien, mientras que los chores, los trajes de bano y la ropa de verano solamente se venderan si estan en nuevas condiciones. En el mes de Marzo, nuestros clients buscan ropa de verano. En este tiempo los chores, la ropa fresca, y los trajes de bano se venderan muy bien, mientras que las sueteres y chaquetas tendran que estar de calidad excepcional para que se vendan. Marcas Consumidores son muy conscientes de marcas de ropa. Nosotros tambien tenemos que ser conscientes de las marcas! Una camisa nueva y simpatica de Wal-mart normalmente se queda colgada y no se vendo por un largo tiempo, mientras que una camisa de marca Tommy Hilfiger se

9 vende el mismo dia que se saca al piso. El costo original es un factor tambien como el valor percibido y de lo que el cliente esta buscando. Muchos clients buscan productos para vender y son muy sabios de las marcas costosas.
